The effectiveness of total quality management: a response to the critics.
A recent paper strongly berates total quality management, claiming it is a tool of management used to adversely manipulate workers in pursuit of corporate gain. This paper questions this supposition, arguing it is the abuse of TQM by management that is at fault. Effective TQM is based on four principles, customer satisfaction, continuous improvement, speaking with facts, and respect for people. It is the lack of the genuine respect for people that is the demise of most TQM initiatives

Exploring electronic effects on the partitioning of actinides(III) from lanthanides(III) using functionalised bis-triazinyl phenanthroline ligands
The first examples of 4,7-disubstituted 2,9-bis(5,5,8,8-tetramethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-1,2,4-benzo-triazin-3-yl)-1,10- phenanthroline (CyMe4 -BTPhen) ligands are reported herein. Evaluating the kinetics, selectivity and stoichiometry of actinide(III) and lanthanide(III) radiotracer extractions has provided a mechanistic insight into the extraction process. For the first time,
it has been demonstrated that metal ion extraction kinetics can be modulated by backbone functionalisation and a promising new CHON compliant candidate ligand with enhanced metal ion extraction kinetics has been identified. The effects of 4,7- functionalisation on the equilibrium metal ion distribution ratios are far more pronounced than those of 5,6-functionalisation. The
complexation of Cm(III) with two of the functionalised ligands was investigated by TRLFS and, at equilibrium, species of 1:2 [M:L] stoichiometry were observed exclusively. A direct correlation between the ELUMO-EHOMO energy gap and metal ion extraction potential is reported, with DFT studies reaffirming experimental findings
Happy feet in a hostile world? The future of penguins depends on proactive management of current and expected threats
Penguins face a wide range of threats. Most observed population changes have been negative and have happened over the last 60 years. Today, populations of 11 penguin species are decreasing. Here we present a review that synthesizes details of threats faced by the world's 18 species of penguins. We discuss alterations to their environment at both breeding sites on land and at sea where they forage. The major drivers of change appear to be climate, and food web alterations by marine fisheries. In addition, we also consider other critical and/or emerging threats, namely human disturbance near nesting sites, pollution due to oil, plastics and chemicals such as mercury and persistent organic compounds. Finally, we assess the importance of emerging pathogens and diseases on the health of penguins. We suggest that in the context of climate change, habitat degradation, introduced exotic species and resource competition with fisheries, successful conservation outcomes will require new and unprecedented levels of science and advocacy. Successful conservation stories of penguin species across their geographical range have occurred where there has been concerted effort across local, national and international boundaries to implement effective conservation planning.This work was supported by the WWF-UK and PEW Foundation. A Search for Dark Higgs Bosons
Recent astrophysical and terrestrial experiments have motivated the proposal
of a dark sector with GeV-scale gauge boson force carriers and new Higgs
bosons. We present a search for a dark Higgs boson using 516 fb-1 of data
collected with the BABAR detector. We do not observe a significant signal and
we set 90% confidence level upper limits on the product of the Standard

Subtle effects of environmental stress observed in the early life stages of the Common frog, Rana temporaria
Worldwide amphibian populations are declining due to habitat loss, disease and pollution. Vulnerability to environmental contaminants such as pesticides will be dependent on the species, the sensitivity of the ontogenic life stage and hence the timing of exposure and the exposure pathway. Herein we investigated the biochemical tissue âfingerprintâ in spawn and early-stage tadpoles of the Common frog, Rana temporaria, using attenuated total reflection- Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy with the objective of observing differences in the biochemical constituents of the respective amphibian tissues due to varying water quality in urban and agricultural ponds. Our results demonstrate that levels of stress (marked by biochemical constituents such as glycogen that are involved in compensatory metabolic mechanisms) can be observed in tadpoles present in the pond most impacted by pollution (nutrients and pesticides), but large annual variability masked any inter-site differences in the frog spawn. ATR-FTIR spectroscopy is capable of detecting differences in tadpoles that are present in selected ponds with different levels of environmental perturbation and thus serves as a rapid and cost effective tool in assessing stress-related effects of pollution in a vulnerable class of organism
Porous Nanomaterials for Ultrabroadband Omnidirectional Anti-Reflection Surfaces with Applications in High Concentration Photovoltaics
Materials for nanoporous coatings that exploit optimized chemistries and self-assembly processes offer capabilities to reach â98% transmission efficiency and negligible scattering losses over the broad wavelength range of the solar spectrum from 350 nm to 1.5 ”m, on both flat and curved glass substrates. These nanomaterial anti-reflection coatings also offer wide acceptance angles, up to ±40°, for both s- and p-polarization states of incident light. Carefully controlled bilayer films have allowed for the fabrication of dual-sided, gradient index profiles on plano-convex lens elements. In concentration photovoltaics platforms, the resultant enhancements in the photovoltaics efficiencies are â8%, as defined by experimental measurements on systems that use microscale triple-junction solar cells. These materials and their applications in technologies that require control over interface reflections have the potential for broad utility in imaging systems, photolithography, light-emitting diodes, and display technologies
GRB 020410: A Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglow Discovered by its Supernova Light
We present the discovery and monitoring of the optical transient (OT)
associated with GRB 020410. The fading OT was found by Hubble Space Telescope
(HST) observations taken 28 and 65 days after burst at a position consistent
with the X-ray afterglow. Subsequent re-examination of early ground based
observations revealed that a faint OT was present 6 hours after burst,
confirming the source association with GRB 020410. A deep non-detection after
one week requires that the OT re-brightened between day 7 and day 28, and
further late time HST data taken approximately 100 days after burst imply that
it is very red.We compare both the flux and color of the excess with supernova
models and show that the data are best explained by the presence of a Type Ib/c
supernova at a redshift z ~ 0.5, which occured roughly coincident with the day
