Using writing assignments in high school geometry to improve students\u27 proof writing ability
The Common Core State Standards encourage the use of writing in mathematics classrooms. This study was designed to create a template for high school teachers to use in a geometry class to improve studentsâ proof writing ability. The students enrolled in the class were asked to complete journal and expository writing assignments throughout the course. The assignments were scored with a rubric. To assess if growth was made in proof writing, the students were all given a test four times throughout the school year. All four tests were assessed using the same rubric. We provide evidence that the template was successful in increasing the studentsâ ability to write geometric proofs by increasing their use of mathematical vocabulary, increasing their ability to use the information in a problem, and increasing their ability to justify their steps with correct mathematical facts or theorems
A novel bee host cannot detect a microbial parasite, in contrast to its original host
Organisms that can detect parasites may have a greater likelihood of avoiding exposure to them. We would expect hosts that share an evolutionary history with a parasite to be more likely to detect and avoid it compared to novel hosts. Nosema ceranae is a gut parasite of the Asian honey bee, Apis cerana, that has relatively recently been detected in the western honey bee, Apis mellifera. Using a Proboscis Extension Response assay, we found that A. cerana was significantly more likely than A. mellifera to avoid sucrose solutions with concentrations above 1 x 10(6) N. ceranae spores per mL. However, neither species avoided the sucrose solutions with lower N. ceranae concentrations, similar to those detected on flowers
Strong Correlations in Actinide Redox Reactions
Reduction-oxidation (redox) reactions of the redox couples An(VI)/An(V),
An(V)/An(IV), and An(IV)/An(III), where An is an element in the family of early
actinides (U, Np, and Pu), as well as Am(VI)/Am(V) and Am(V)/Am(III), are
modeled by combining density functional theory with a generalized Anderson
impurity model that accounts for the strong correlations between the 5f
electrons. Diagonalization of the Anderson impurity model yields improved
estimates for the redox potentials and the propensity of the actinide complexes
to disproportionate.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figure, 3 tables. Corrections and clarifications; this

Development and assessment of a Microsoft Kinect based system for imaging the breast in three dimensions
Three-dimensional surface imaging technologies have been used in the planning and evaluation of breast reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. The aim of this study was to develop a 3D surface imaging system based on the Microsoft Kinect and assess the accuracy and repeatability with which the system could image the breast. A system comprising two Kinects, calibrated to provide a complete 3D image of the mannequin was developed. Digital measurements of Euclidean and surface distances between landmarks showed acceptable agreement with manual measurements. The mean differences for Euclidean and surface distances were 1.9 mm and 2.2 mm, respectively. The system also demonstrated good intra- and inter-rater reliability (ICCs > 0.999). The Kinect-based 3D surface imaging system offers a low-cost, readily accessible alternative to more expensive, commercially available systems, which have had limited clinical use
Preservice teachersâ adaptations to tensions associated with the edTPA during its early implementation in New York and Washington states
The edTPA is a teaching performance assessment (TPA) that the states of New York and Washington implemented as a licensure requirement in 2013. While TPAs are not new modes of assessment, New York and Washington are the first states to use the edTPA specifically as a compulsory, high-stakes policy lever in an effort to strengthen the quality and accountability of teachers and teacher educators. This study examines 24 New York and Washington teaching candidatesâ experiences with the edTPA during its first year of consequential use for state certification. The data, drawn from qualitative interviews that were part of a larger mixed-methods study, reveal that preservice teachers had to mediate several tensions associated with the edTPAâs dual role as a formative assessment tool and a licensure mechanism. In this paper, we identify those tensions, describe candidatesâ efforts to mediate them, and discuss the extent to which that mediation process may or may not contribute to the improvement of teachersâ practices. Given the edTPAâs positioning in a policy context â specifically, the potential for the assessmentâs locus of control, high stakes, and opaque rating process to distort the procedures it is intended to measure â the paper concludes with recommendations for teacher education programs aimed at capitalizing on the edTPAâs benefits and mitigating its unproductive tensions.
