Vitamin C has efficient antioxidant properties and is involved in important physiological processes such as collagen synthesis. As such, vitamin C deficiency leads to serious complications, including vascular diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of vitamin C treatment on collar-induced intimal thickening. Rabbits were fed a normocholesterolemic diet and a non-occlusive silicon collar was placed around the left carotid artery for 3, 7, and 14 days. The rabbits were treated with or without vitamin C (150 mg/kg/day). Collar-induced intimal thickening became apparent at day 7. The effect of the collar on intimal thickening was more prominent at day 14. Vitamin C treatment significantly inhibited collar-induced intimal thickening at day 14. The placement of the collar around the carotid artery decreased maximum contractile responses against contractile agents (KCl, phenylephrine, 5-hydroxytryptamine). The effect of the collar on contractile responses was enhanced as days elapsed. Decreased contractile responses of collared carotid arteries normalized at day 14 in the vitamin C treatment group. Vitamin C treatment also restored sensitivity to phenylephrine. The collar also significantly decreased acetylcholine-induced relaxations at day 3 and day 7. Acetylcholine-induced relaxations normalized in collared-arteries in the placebo group at day 14. Vitamin C treatment significantly increased acetylcholine-induced relaxations of both normal and collared carotid arteries at day 14. MMP-9 expression increased in collared arteries at day 3 and day 7 but did not change at day 14. MMP-2 expression increased in collared arteries at day 14. However, vitamin C treatment reduced collar-stimulated expression of MMP-2 at day 14. These findings indicate that vitamin C may have potentially beneficial effects on the early stages of atherosclerosis. Furthermore these results, for the first time, may indicate that vitamin C can also normalize decreased contractile response through perivascular collar placement

OBJECTIVE: Zoledronic acid (ZA), a nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate, has been reported to exhibit a protective effect against cancers and prevent bone fractures. It also induces apoptosis by increasing proinflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress. Oxidative stress increases significantly during ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. The liver is highly sensitive to IR injury. In this study, we aim to investigate whether high-dose ZA treatment affects the liver during IR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used twenty-one Sprague-Dawley male rats in our study. and they were subdivided randomly into three groups, each containing seven rats. A single dose of 100 pg/kg ZA was administered via the intraperitoneal route in the ZA group. Forty-eight hours after the ZA administration, infrarenal abdominal aortic cross ligation was performed on the ZA and IR groups. After 2 hours of ischemia, 2 hours of reperfusion was applied. RESULTS: The malondialdehyde (MDA) level of the control group was significantly lower than the IR (p = 0.006) and ZA (p<0.001) groups. However, the superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) values of the control group were significantly higher than the values of the IR group (p<0.05. p<0.001, and p<0.05) and ZA group (p = 0.002, p<0.001, and p<0.001). Caspase-3 activity was significantly higher in the IR group as compared to the control group (p<0.001). The caspase-3 activity in the ZA group, on the other hand, was higher than both the control (p<0.001) and IR groups (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: High-dose ZA may exacerbate liver injury during IR by increasing reactive oxygen species production and apoptosis

Background: Screw loosening, which is a major problem in dynamic systems, can be easily overcome with 2-stage surgery. In this article, the clinical and radiological results of patients undergoing dynamic stabilization with a Dynesys device in 2 stages are discussed. Methods: A total of 10 male and 13 female adult patients were included in this single-center retrospective study conducted between 2018 and 2021. The mean age of the patients was 65.6 years. All of the patients had pain complaints that affected their daily lives. Bone density T scores were determined with the dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry method before patients were admitted for surgery. In the first surgery, Dynesys system pedicle screws were inserted. After 6 months of osteointegration, Dynesys system spacers and elastic bandages were placed. Preoperative, early postoperative, and late postoperative visual analog pain scale (VAS) scores and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) scores were determined and statistically compared. Results: Patients were followed for an average of 30 months. Complications and recurrence were not observed. Neurological deficits were not observed after patients recovered from anesthesia. Significant improvement was observed in the ODI and VAS parameters in the preoperative (ODI: 66.2%, VAS: 7.8), early postoperative (ODI: 20.3%, VAS: 2.4), and late postoperative (ODI: 6.8% and VAS: 1.1) periods. Symptomatic improvement was seen in all patients. No screw breakage or loosening was detected by radiological evaluation in any of the patients during the 2-year follow-up period. Conclusions: In our experience, the insufficiency of the proximal and distal end screws is eliminated when 2 stages of dynamic system stabilizations are completed after osteointegration of the screws

PURPOSEThoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) is a safe and effective treatment method for a variety of thoracic aortic pathologies. We aimed to investigate the mortality and complication outcomes and associated factors of TEVAR treatment in Turkey.METHODSIn this single-centered retrospective study, patients with thoracic aorta pathologies treated with TEVAR at Gazi University School of Medicine, Department of Radiology, between January 2009 and January 2020 were included. Perioperative, early, and late mortality, complications, and technical success were the outcomes.RESULTSThe sample comprised 58 patients with 68 TEVAR interventions. Eleven (16.2%) patients were female, the mean age was 60.1 ± 13.4 years. Emergent TEVAR was required in 20.7% of the patients. The main indications of TEVAR were intact descending aorta aneurysms in 37.9% of the sample, 31.0% Stanford type-B dissection, and 12.1% traumatic transections. The technical success rate of primary and secondary interventions was 98.3% and 100%, respectively. The mortality rate in the first 30 days was 8.6%. Seventeen (29.3%) cases had at least 1 complication related to TEVAR treatment. The most common complication was type-1A endoleak (10.3%). Having acute symptoms, stroke, and acute renal failure were significantly associated with mortality (P=.020, .049, and .009, respectively).CONCLUSIONThis study reported the outcomes of TEVAR treatment from a tertiary medical center in Turkey over a decade. Patients presenting with acute symptoms and who developed stroke and acute renal failure after the procedure should be carefully followed up as these factors were found to be associated with mortality
