    Measurement of the spatial distribution of mucilage around roots using infrared spectroscopy

    Mucilage is a mixture of polysaccharides and some lipids which is secreted by the root tip. It facilitates plant nutrient acquisition, stabilizes aggregates, reduces lubrication during plant growth and may increase rhizosphere water content due to its high water holding capacity. So far there is no method to measure the spatial distribution of mucilage in soil around roots. The aim of this study was to test whether infrared spectroscopy can be applied to quantify gradients of mucilage around roots in soil. The C-H to C-O ratio obtained from infrared spectroscopy measurements is an indicator of soil hydrophobicity. As Mucilage turns hydrophobic after drying we hypothesized that mucilage can be detected by the C-H to C-O ratio measured with infrared spectroscopy. We grew maize plants in rhizoboxes filled with quartz silt. Before measurement the planted containers were dried and the roots were removed from soil. Infrared spectroscopy measurements were conducted with a spatial resolution of 50x50 ”m a) radially with increasing distance from the root channel center and b) axially with increasing distance from the root channel tip. In parallel, the contact angle, which also indicates soil hydrophobicity, was quantified in the same locations. Both measurements were additionally conducted on glass slides covered with quartz silt mixed with given concentrations of mucilage. The measurements on the glass slides revealed that the C-H to C-O ratio and the contact angle measurements correlated well with the mucilage concentration in soil. Similarly, the infrared spectroscopy measurements in in the rhizoboxes revealed that radial profiles of mucilage around roots can be quantified: while the C-H to C-O ratio was highest inside the root channels, it decreased to the bulk soil values 0.7 mm in radial direction from the border of the root channel. In axial direction the C-H to C-O ratio did not change significantly, indicating that those compounds causing hydrophobicity of mucilage are not easily degraded by soil microorganisms. We showed that infrared spectroscopy can be applied to measure profiles of mucilage around roots in soil. The radial profiles of mucilage were narrower than those reported for other rhizodeposits which may be explained by the viscosity of mucilage

    QuantUM: Quantitative Safety Analysis of UML Models

    When developing a safety-critical system it is essential to obtain an assessment of different design alternatives. In particular, an early safety assessment of the architectural design of a system is desirable. In spite of the plethora of available formal quantitative analysis methods it is still difficult for software and system architects to integrate these techniques into their every day work. This is mainly due to the lack of methods that can be directly applied to architecture level models, for instance given as UML diagrams. Also, it is necessary that the description methods used do not require a profound knowledge of formal methods. Our approach bridges this gap and improves the integration of quantitative safety analysis methods into the development process. All inputs of the analysis are specified at the level of a UML model. This model is then automatically translated into the analysis model, and the results of the analysis are consequently represented on the level of the UML model. Thus the analysis model and the formal methods used during the analysis are hidden from the user.     Google Glass Augmented Reality: Generic Learning Outcomes for Art Galleries

    Art galleries are increasingly asked to provide evidence of their efforts towards facilitating visitors’ learning experience. Augmented reality (AR) and wearable computing has the potential to create a realistic learning environment. Using Google Glass allows art gallery visitors to receive augmented information while looking at paintings. The Generic Learning Outcomes (GLO) framework was specifically designed to investigate visitors’ learning experience in museums and art galleries however, research on art galleries visitors’ learning experience through wearable computing and AR applications is scarce. This study aims to assess how Google Glass enhances visitors’ learning outcomes within the art gallery environment. Twenty-two visitors participated in a test of the Google Glass Museum Zoom application. Visitors were interviewed and the data were analysed using thematic analysis and revealed that Google Glass helps visitors to see connections and enhance the knowledge and understanding of paintings

    Introducing the DizzyQuest: an app-based diary for vestibular disorders

    BACKGROUND Most questionnaires currently used for assessing symptomatology of vestibular disorders are retrospective, inducing recall bias and lowering ecological validity. An app-based diary, administered multiple times in daily life, could increase the accuracy and ecological validity of symptom measurement. The objective of this study was to introduce a new experience sampling method (ESM) based vestibular diary app (DizzyQuest), evaluate response rates, and to provide examples of DizzyQuest outcome measures which can be used in future research. METHODS Sixty-three patients diagnosed with a vestibular disorder were included. The DizzyQuest consisted of four questionnaires. The morning- and evening-questionnaires were administered once each day, the within-day-questionnaire 10 times a day using a semi-random time schedule, and the attack questionnaire could be completed after the occurrence of a vertigo or dizziness attack. Data were collected for 4~weeks. Response rates and loss-to-follow-up were determined. Reported symptoms in the within-day-questionnaire were compared within and between patients and subgroups of patients with different vestibular disorders. RESULTS Fifty-one patients completed the study period. Average response rates were significantly higher than the desired response rate of \textgreater 50% (p \textless 0.001). The attack-questionnaire was used 159 times. A variety of neuro-otological symptoms and different disease profiles were demonstrated between patients and subgroups of patients with different vestibular disorders. CONCLUSION The DizzyQuest is able to capture vestibular symptoms within their psychosocial context in daily life, with little recall bias and high ecological validity. The DizzyQuest reached the desired response rates and showed different disease profiles between subgroups of patients with different vestibular disorders. This is the first time ESM was used to assess daily symptoms and quality of life in vestibular disorders, showing that it might be a useful tool in this population

    Spatial Distribution of Mucilage in the Rhizosphere Measured With Infrared Spectroscopy

    Mucilage is receiving increasing attention because of its putative effects on plant growth, but so far no method is available to measure its spatial distribution in the rhizosphere. We tested whether the C-H signal related to mucilage fatty acids is detectable by infrared spectroscopy and if this method can be used to determine the spatial distribution of mucilage in the rhizosphere. Maize plants were grown in rhizoboxes filled with soil free of organic matter. Infrared measurements were carried out along transects perpendicular as well as axially to the root channels. The perpendicular gradients of the C-H proportions showed a decrease of C-H with increasing distance: 0.8 mm apart from the root center the C-H signals achieved a level near zero. The measured concentrations of mucilage were comparable with results obtained in previous studies, which encourages the use of infrared spectroscopy to quantitatively image mucilage in the rhizosphere

    Ice nucleation activity of agricultural soil dust aerosols from Mongolia, Argentina, and Germany

    Soil dust particles emitted from agricultural areas contain considerable mass fractions of organic material. Also, soil dust particles may act as carriers for potentially ice-active biological particles. In this work, we present ice nucleation experiments conducted in the Aerosol Interaction and Dynamics in the Atmosphere (AIDA) cloud chamber. We investigated the ice nucleation efficiency of four types of soil dust from different regions of the world. The results are expressed as ice nucleation active surface site (INAS) densities and presented for the immersion freezing and the deposition nucleation mode. For immersion freezing occurring at 254 K, samples from Argentina, China, and Germany show ice nucleation efficiencies which are by a factor of 10 higher than desert dusts. On average, the difference in ice nucleation efficiencies between agricultural and desert dusts becomes significantly smaller at temperatures below 247 K. In the deposition mode the soil dusts showed higher ice nucleation activity than Arizona Test Dust over a temperature range between 232 and 248 K and humidities RHice up to 125%. INAS densities varied between 109 and 1011m-2 for these thermodynamic conditions. For one soil dust sample (Argentinian Soil), the effect of treatments with heat was investigated. Heat treatments (383 K) did not affect the ice nucleation efficiency observed at 249 K. This finding presumably excludes proteinaceous ice-nucleating entities as the only source of the increased ice nucleation efficiency.Fil: Steinke, I..     A modern network approach to revisiting the positive and negative affective schedule (PANAS) construct validity

    Introduction: The factor structure of the Positive and Negative Affective Schedule (PANAS) is still a topic of debate. There are several reasons why using Exploratory Graph Analysis (EGA) for scale validation is advantageous and can help understand and resolve conflicting results in the factor analytic literature. Objective: The main objective of the present study was to advance the knowledge regarding the factor structure underlying the PANAS scores by utilizing the different functionalities of the EGA method. EGA was used to (1) estimate the dimensionality of the PANAS scores, (2) establish the stability of the dimensionality estimate and of the item assignments into the dimensions, and (3) assess the impact of potential redundancies across item pairs on the dimensionality and structure of the PANAS scores. Method: This assessment was carried out across two studies that included two large samples of participants.
