    Although during the data production phase, the data producers will usually ensure the products to be easily used by the specific power users the products serve. However, most data products are also posted for general public to use. It is not straightforward for data producers to anticipate what tools that these general end-data users are likely to use. In this talk, we will try to help fill in the gap by going over various tools related to Earth Science and how they work with the existing NASA HDF (Hierarchical Data Format) data products and the reasons why some products cannot be visualized or analyzed by existing tools. One goal is for to give insights for data producers on how to make their data product more interoperable. On the other hand, we also provide some hints for end users on how to make tools work with existing HDF data products.     A SUSY SO(10) GUT with an Intermediate Scale

    We examine a superpotential for an SO(10) GUT and show that if the parameters of the superpotential are in a certain region, the SO(10) GUT has an intermediate symmetry SU(2)LSU(2)RSU(3)CU(1)BL{\rm SU(2)}_L \otimes {\rm SU(2)}_R \otimes {\rm SU(3)}_C \otimes {\rm U(1)}_{B-L} which breaks down to the group of the Standard Model at an intermediate scale 10101210^{10-12} GeV.     Variation in the digestiility of amino acids in soybean meal from a single processing plant

    Digestibilities of amino acids among samples of soybean meal (SBM) collected during a fall harvest season (4 collections made 15 d apart) were similar, except that true digestibility from tryptophan was lower for a sample collected on d 30 of the experiment vs SMB samples collected on the other dates. Our data suggest that proximate components and amino acid digestibilities of the SBM were very consistent and uniform during the 45 d of sample collection in one processing plant

    Electric Polarizability of Neutral Hadrons from Lattice QCD

    By simulating a uniform electric field on a lattice and measuring the change in the rest mass, we calculate the electric polarizability of neutral mesons and baryons using the methods of quenched lattice QCD. Specifically, we measure the electric polarizability coefficient from the quadratic response to the electric field for 10 particles: the vector mesons ρ0\rho^0 and K0K^{*0}; the octet baryons n, Σ0\Sigma^0, Λo0\Lambda_{o}^{0}, Λs0\Lambda_{s}^{0}, and Ξ0\Xi^0; and the decouplet baryons Δ0\Delta^0, Σ0\Sigma^{*0}, and Ξ0\Xi^{*0}. Independent calculations using two fermion actions were done for consistency and comparison purposes. One calculation uses Wilson fermions with a lattice spacing of a=0.10a=0.10 fm. The other uses tadpole improved L\"usher-Weiss gauge fields and clover quark action with a lattice spacing a=0.17a=0.17 fm. Our results for neutron electric polarizability are compared to experiment.Comment: 25 pages, 20 figure

    Reversing conditional orderings

    We analyze some specific aspects concerning conditional orderings and relations among them. To this purpose we define a suitable concept of reversed conditional ordering and prove some related results. In particular we aim to compare the univariate stochastic orderings ≤ st, ≤ hr, and ≤ lr in terms of differences among different notions of conditional orderings. Some applications of our result to the analysis of positive dependence will be detailed. We concentrate attention to the case of a pair of scalar random variables X, Y ​. Suitable extensions to multivariate cases are possible

    We analyze bound states of an electron in the field of a positively charged nanoshell. We find that the binding and excitation energies of the system decrease when the radius of the nanoshell increases. We also show that the ground and the first excited states of this system have remarkably the same properties of the highly excited Rydberg states of a hydrogen-like atom i.e. a high sensitivity to the external perturbations and long radiative lifetimes.Comment: 16 page

    The basic Terra fusion product provides general atmospheric and surface research community a unique temporally-fused set of radiance measurements from all the Terra instruments, namely, the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR), the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER), the Clouds and Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES), and the Measurements of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT). This product contains (1) radiance values of IOFVs (pixels) for each spectral band at a native resolution for each instrument, (2) their quality flags associated with radiance values, (3) their latitude and longitude information at a native resolution, (4) time of observations, (5) instrument viewing geometry, and (6) solar position.NASA ACCESS program under contract NNX16AMO7AThis research is part of the Blue Waters sustained-petascale computing project, which is supported by the National Science Foundation (awards OCI-0725070 and ACI-1238993) and the state of Illinois.
