First steps to understand heat tolerance of temperate maize at adult stage: identification of QTL across multiple environments with connected segregating populations
KEY MESSAGE: Dents were more heat tolerant than Flints. QTL for heat tolerance with respect to grain yield at field conditions were identified considering multiple populations and environments. ABSTRACT: High temperatures have the potential to cause severe damages to maize production. This study aims to elucidate the genetic mechanisms of heat tolerance under field conditions in maize and the genome regions contributing to natural variation. In our study, heat tolerance was assessed on a multi-environment level under non-controlled field conditions for a set of connected intra- and interpool Dent and Flint populations. Our findings indicate that Dent are more heat tolerant during adult stage than Flint genotypes. We identified 11 quantitative trait loci (QTL) including 2 loci for heat tolerance with respect to grain yield. Furthermore, we identified six heat-tolerance and 112 heat-responsive candidate genes colocating with the previously mentioned QTL. To investigate their contribution to the response to heat stress and heat tolerance, differential expression and sequence variation of the identified candidate genes should be subjected to further research. Electron beam profile imaging in the presence of coherent optical radiation effects
High-brightness electron beams with low energy spread at existing and future
x-ray free-electron lasers are affected by various collective beam
self-interactions and microbunching instabilities. The corresponding coherent
optical radiation effects, e.g., coherent optical transition radiation, render
electron beam profile imaging impossible and become a serious issue for all
kinds of electron beam diagnostics using imaging screens. Furthermore, coherent
optical radiation effects can also be related to intrinsically ultrashort
electron bunches or the existence of ultrashort spikes inside the electron
bunches. In this paper, we discuss methods to suppress coherent optical
radiation effects both by electron beam profile imaging in dispersive beamlines
and by using scintillation imaging screens in combination with separation
techniques. The suppression of coherent optical emission in dispersive
beamlines is shown by analytical calculations, numerical simulations, and
measurements. Transverse and longitudinal electron beam profile measurements in
the presence of coherent optical radiation effects in non-dispersive beamlines

Calculation of The Band Gap Energy and Study of Cross Luminescence in Alkaline-Earth Dihalide Crystals
The band gap energy as well as the possibility of cross luminescence
processes in alkaline-earth dihalide crystals have been calculated using the ab
initio Perturbed-Ion (PI) model. The gap is calculated in several ways: as a
difference between one-electron energy eigenvalues and as a difference between
total energies of appropriate electronic states of the crystal, both at the HF
level and with inclusion of Coulomb correlation effects. In order to study the
possibility of ocurrence of cross luminescence in these materials, the energy
difference between the valence band and the upmost core band for some
representative crystals has been calculated. Both calculated band gap energies
and cross luminescence predictions compare very well with the available

Are blackcaps sylvia atricapilla differential distance migrants by sex?
Aims: To investigate if male and female blackcaps show differences in the amplitude of migratory
movements.
Methods: The extent of movements of male and female British blackcaps were analysed using ringing recovery
records. Furthermore, through a literature review and the collection of original field data, the
sex-ratios of blackcap samples taken at several latitudes in Europe and Africa were compared.
Results: There were no differences between British male and female blackcaps in relation to wintering
latitude or distance moved during migration. Sex-ratios of blackcap samples were quite even across a wide
range of latitudes. However, there was a significantly larger proportion of females in samples of birds that
wintered in Africa.
Conclusions: Laboratory data and morphological studies have yielded inconclusive results in relation to
the question of whether or not European blackcaps are differential distance migrants. The results from the
present study suggest that British blackcaps are not differential distance migrants. Furthermore, there is,
at best, only a weak latitudinal segregation of the sexes of blackcaps wintering in Europe and Africa. The
slightly higher proportion of males in European samples, when compared to Africa, could result from a
differential behaviour of males and females in some blackcap populations, or simply result from differences
in the sex-ratios of blackcap populations breeding and wintering in different areas. An absence of
a pronounced latitudinal segregation in the size-monomorphic blackcap is interesting, and contrasts
with the pattern found in more sexually dimorphic species, such as the chiffchaff Phylloscopus collybita
or the robin Erithacus rubecula
Properties of pattern formation and selection processes in nonequilibrium systems with external fluctuations
We extend the phase field crystal method for nonequilibrium patterning to
stochastic systems with external source where transient dynamics is essential.
It was shown that at short time scales the system manifests pattern selection
processes. These processes are studied by means of the structure function
dynamics analysis. Nonequilibrium pattern-forming transitions are analyzed by
