    Color in computing

    Color in the computing environment, once considered a luxury, is becoming more available compared to being just the occasional exception. As the number of users exploring the uses of color through displayed and printed images increases, the problems associated with its use are becoming widely known. What worked in black and white is not easily translated into color. The use of color needs to begin with the basic understanding of what is color, its terminology and its utilization as an enhancement to communications tool. Only after the basic terminology and effective means of communication are understood will color flourish as a successful means of communication in the computing environment. Currently, a number of products are seen as solutions in the realm of color usage in the computing environment. Four different contributions, PostScript Level 2 (Adobe), PhotoYCC(Eastman Kodak), Pantone Matching System (Pantone), and TekHVC (Tektronix), each deliver a component of electronic color reproduction. PostScript Level 2 delivers consistent color from monitor to printer, with variations based on printer manufacture and the printing technology utilized. PhotoYCC defines a format for image capture and retrieval with a wealth of possibilities for image sources. Pantone Matching System expands the accessibility of simulated prepress work, coupled with ink formulation and quality control. Tektronix attempted to define TekHVC as an industry standard based on a more uniform color space than that which is defined by previous industry standards. Because of the lack of acceptance, Tektronix has limited this solution to their printers. Solutions are abundant, but as costs continue to fall, the expectation of consistent color will rise. The adoption of standards across operating environments and software packages is critical to continued increase of the use of color in the computing environment

    Mixed-Morphology Supernova Remnants in X-rays: Isothermal Plasma in HB21 and Probable Oxygen-Rich Ejecta in CTB 1

    (Abridged) We present an analysis of X-ray observations made of the Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) HB21 (G89.0+4.7) and CTB 1 (G116.9+0.2), two well-known mixed-morphology (MM) SNRs. We find a marked contrast between the X-ray properties of these SNRs: for HB21, the extracted ASCA spectra of the northwest and southeast regions of the X-ray emitting plasma can be fit with a single thermal model with marginally enhanced silicon and sulfur abundances. For both of these regions, the derived column density and temperature are N_H~0.3x10^22 cm^-2 and kT~0.7 keV, respectively. No significant spatial differences in temperature or elemental abundances between the two regions are detected and the X-ray-emitting plasma in both regions is close to ionization equilibrium. Our Chandra spectral analysis of CTB 1 reveals that this source is likely an oxygen-rich SNR with enhanced abundances of oxygen and neon. The extracted ASCA spectra for the southwestern and northeastern regions of CTB 1 cannot be fit with a single thermal component. Based on our fits to these spectra, we derive a column density N_H~0.6x10^22 cm^-2 and a temperature for the soft thermal component of kT_soft~0.28 keV. The hard emission from the southwest may be modeled with either a thermal component (kT_hard~3 keV) or by a power law component (Gamma~2-3) while the hard emission from the northeast may be modeled with a power law component (Gamma~1.4). We have also extracted ASCA GIS spectra of the discrete X-ray source 1WGA J0001.4+6229 which is seen in projection toward CTB 1. These spectra are best fit using a power-law model with a photon index Gamma=2.2^{+0.5}_{-1.2} which is typical for featureless power-law continua produced by rotation-powered pulsars.     Kinetics of toluene degradation by toluene-oxidizing bacteria as a function of oxygen concentration, and the effect of nitrate

    The kinetics of toluene degradation as a function of oxygen concentration were compared for six strains of toluene-oxidizing bacteria using initial rate assays. The effect of nitrate was also examined. Rates of degradation and the relative effect of oxygen on the degradation rate were correlated with the pathway for toluene oxidation. Strains which synthesize toluene dioxygenases, Pseudomonas putida F1, P. fluorescens CFS215, and Pseudomonas sp. strain W31, degraded toluene at significantly higher rates (151–166 nmol/mg per min) than strains synthesizing toluene monooxygenases, Burkholderia cepacia G4 (23 nmol/mg per min) and B. pickettii PKO1 (14 nmol/mg per min), or a methylmonooxygenase, P. putida PaW1 (12 nmol/mg per min). Rates declined 30–48% for the dioxygenase strains and 25% for PaW1 as the oxygen concentration was decreased from 240 to 50 ΜM, but declined less than 10% for G4 and PKO1. Nitrate enhanced toluene degradation by the denitrifying strains PKO1 and W31 at oxygen concentrations below 30 ΜM, but had no significant effect on any of the other strains. Biphasic kinetics were observed for all of the strains, with double-reciprocal plots of the data exhibiting an inflection point at a ‘critical oxygen concentration’ between 20 and 30 ΜM. Below this concentration, the rate of toluene degradation was inhibited to a greater extent than predicted by the kinetic data for higher oxygen concentrations. For the denitrifying strains PKO1 and W31, however, monophasic kinetics were observed when nitrate was provided as an alternative electron acceptor. These observations suggest that biphasic kinetics result when rates of toluene degradation are limited by the availability of electron acceptor at the critical oxygen concentration, and that this limitation is overcome by denitrifying strains able to respire nitrate. Taken together, our findings suggest that the synthesis of monooxygenases and the ability to denitrify represent independent adaptations for toluene utilization in low oxygen environments. Moreover, these data support the use of nitrate in mixed electron acceptor strategies for the bioremediation of contaminated aquifers, as well as the targeted use of monooxygenase and dioxygenase strains in settings in which their physiological traits can be best exploited.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/74870/1/j.1574-6941.1997.tb00387.x.pd

    The Orbit of the Eclipsing X-ray Pulsar EXO 1722-363

    With recent and archival Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) X-ray measurements of the heavily obscured X-ray pulsar EXO 1722-363 (IGR J17252-3616), we carried out a pulse timing analysis to determine the orbital solution for the first time. The binary system is characterized by a_x sin(i) = 101 +/- 3 lt-s and P_orb = 9.7403 +/- 0.0004 days (90% confidence), with the precision of the orbital period being obtained by connecting datasets separated by more than 7 years (272 orbital cycles). The orbit is consistent with circular, and e < 0.19 at the 90% confidence level. The mass function is 11.7 +/- 1.2 M_sun and confirms that this source is a High Mass X-ray Binary (HMXB) system. The orbital period, along with the previously known ~414 s pulse period, places this system in the part of the Corbet diagram populated by supergiant wind accretors. Using previous eclipse time measurements by Corbet et al. and our orbital solution, combined with the assumption that the primary underfills its Roche lobe, we find i > 61 degrees at the 99% confidence level, the radius of the primary is between 21 R_sun and 37 R_sun, and its mass is less than about 22 M_sun. The acceptable range of radius and mass shows that the primary is probably a supergiant of spectral type B0I-B5I. Photometric measurements of its likely counterpart are consistent with the spectral type and luminosity if the distance to the system is between 5.3 kpc and 8.7 kpc. Spectral analysis of the pulsar as a function of orbital phase reveals an evolution of the hydrogen column density suggestive of dense filaments of gas in the downstream wake of the pulsar, with higher levels of absorption seen at orbital phases 0.5-1.0, as well as a variable Fe K_alpha line.Comment: Submitted to ApJ, 11 pages, 11 figure

    Feasibility of a school-based physical activity intervention for adolescents with disability

    Background: Adolescents with disability are less active and have lower levels of physical fitness than their typically developing peers. Schools are ideal settings to address this; however, few school-based interventions have been designed and evaluated among this group. Therefore, the aim of this pilot study was to determine the feasibility of a time-efficient school-based physical activity intervention for adolescents with disability. Methods: A non-randomized pilot trial was conducted with adolescents in the special education unit at one secondary school in New South Wales, Australia. Sixteen grade 11 and 12 students (aged 17.3 ± 0.7 years) participated in the 2-month physical activity intervention. Two classroom teachers were trained to facilitate the delivery of a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) program, known as Burn 2 Learn adapted (B2La). Teachers were asked to deliver 2–3 weekly HIIT sessions for a period of 2 months. Four domains of feasibility (acceptability, implementation, adaptability, and practicality) were assessed using quantitative measures at the student and teacher levels (e.g., observations, process evaluation questionnaires, and heart rate [HR] monitoring). Data were also collected from three learning and support teachers who assisted classroom teachers with intervention delivery. Preliminary efficacy of the intervention on measures of adolescents’ functional capacity (6-min walk/run test) and muscular fitness (sit-to-stand test and modified push-up test) were analyzed using paired sample t-tests. Results: Moderate-to-high levels of program satisfaction were reported by both students (80% rated “Good” or “Excellent”) and teachers (100% rated “Good” or “Excellent”). Teachers reported delivering 2.5 ± 0.7 sessions per week during the study. Based on researcher session observations, the program was delivered effectively by teachers (14/20). However, HR data indicated session intensity was lower than intended. The program was considered “adaptable” by teachers, with several observed modifications to HIIT sessions to cater for the needs of adolescents with disability. No adverse events were reported. We observed improvements in preliminary efficacy measures. Conclusions: Our findings suggest it is feasible to train teachers to deliver a school-based HIIT program for adolescents with disability. Evaluation of B2La within a larger-scale effectiveness trial is warranted

    Real-time experimental measurement of swept source VCSEL properties relevant to OCT imaging

    A real-time study of the dynamic properties of a frequency swept vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) is presented. Such tunable laser sources have previously been shown to provide long coherence lengths and improved performance in metrology and imaging applications. Single-shot interferometric reconstruction of both the phase and intensity of the swept source allows for experimental measurement of the full complex electric field over multiple sweep periods. Access to the electric field enables direct measurement of laser properties that can be related to the imaging performance of the laser when used in a swept source optical coherence tomography application. Both inter-sweep and intra-sweep characterization is possible, including determination of the instantaneous spectral shape, sweep rate, linewidth, coherence roll-off, and point spread function

    Acceptability of OP/Na swabbing for SARS-CoV-2: a prospective observational cohort surveillance study in Western Australian schools

    Objectives: When the COVID-19 pandemic was declared, Governments responded with lockdown and isolation measures to combat viral spread, including the closure of many schools. More than a year later, widespread screening for SARS-CoV-2 is critical to allow schools and other institutions to remain open. Here, we describe the acceptability of a minimally invasive COVID-19 screening protocol trialled by the Western Australian Government to mitigate the risks of and boost public confidence in schools remaining open. To minimise discomfort, and optimise recruitment and tolerability in unaccompanied children, a combined throat and nasal (OP/Na) swab was chosen over the nasopharyngeal swab commonly used, despite slightly reduced test performance. Design, setting and participants: Trialling of OP/Na swabbing took place as part of a prospective observational cohort surveillance study in 79 schools across Western Australia. Swabs were collected from 5903 asymptomatic students and 1036 asymptomatic staff in 40 schools monthly between June and September 2020. Outcome measures: PCR testing was performed with a two-step diagnostic and independent confirmatory PCR for any diagnostic PCR positives. Concurrent surveys, collected online through the REDCap platform, evaluated participant experiences of in-school swabbing. Results: 13 988 swabs were collected from students and staff. There were zero positive test results for SARS-CoV-2, including no false positives. Participants reported high acceptability: 71% of students reported no or minimal discomfort and most were willing to be reswabbed (4% refusal rate). Conclusions: OP/Na swabbing is acceptable and repeatable in schoolchildren as young as 4 years old and may combat noncompliance rates by significantly increasing the acceptability of testing. This kind of minimally-invasive testing will be key to the success of ongoing, voluntary mass screening as society adjusts to a new ‘normal’ in the face of COVID-19.     The interaction between a sexually transferred steroid hormone and a female protein regulates oogenesis in the malaria mosquito anopheles gambiae

    Molecular interactions between male and female factors during mating profoundly affect the reproductive behavior and physiology of female insects. In natural populations of the malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae, blood-fed females direct nutritional resources towards oogenesis only when inseminated. Here we show that the mating-dependent pathway of egg development in these mosquitoes is regulated by the interaction between the steroid hormone 20-hydroxy-ecdysone (20E) transferred by males during copulation and a female Mating-Induced Stimulator of Oogenesis (MISO) protein. RNAi silencing of MISO abolishes the increase in oogenesis caused by mating in blood-fed females, causes a delay in oocyte development, and impairs the function of male-transferred 20E. Co-immunoprecipitation experiments show that MISO and 20E interact in the female reproductive tract. Moreover MISO expression after mating is induced by 20E via the Ecdysone Receptor, demonstrating a close cooperation between the two factors. Male-transferred 20E therefore acts as a mating signal that females translate into an increased investment in egg development via a MISO-dependent pathway. The identification of this male–female reproductive interaction offers novel opportunities for the control of mosquito populations that transmit malaria

    Primary Schoolchildren’s Experiences of Participatory Theatre in a Heritage Site

    There is a growing need for articulation of the theoretical framework underpinning performance as a learning medium in heritage sites and for an in-depth insight into the children's experiences therein. The aim of this paper is to explore some of the themes that emerged from researching participatory theatre in a historic house as experienced by two primary school groups. The methodology drawing upon the principles of participatory research with children and a constructivist theoretical framework employed interviews, observations and drawings as data generation methods to explore the children's individual and collective experiences. The research findings underline the interplay between the events' theatrical and interpretive format and advocate the significance of children's co-authorship of such events
