A Look into Electronic Word-of-Mouth: The Willingness of Consumers to Write Online Reviews

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to examine the willingness of a consumer to write an online review in relation to their love for a brand, their attachment to a brand and their satisfaction with shopping online for that brand. There are limited empirical studies that investigate the impact of Brand Love, Brand Attachment, and Electronic Shopping Experience Satisfaction on online reviews. Brand Love is the extent of emotional attachment that a content consumer feels for a certain brand or trade name whereas Brand Attachment measures the degree or strength to which consumers connects themselves with a brand. Lastly, a consumer’s satisfaction with their online shopping experience encompasses a variety of factors, such as product performance and product price. Data was gathered via a Qualtrics survey. A total of 206 online shoppers submitted usable data. These shoppers had all shopped and bought an item they love online in the past six months. Multiple regression was used to test the proposed hypotheses regarding intentions to write a review and the three constructs: Brand Love, Brand Attachment, and Electronic Shopping Experience Satisfaction. Results show that only Brand Attachment may have an influence on a consumer’s willingness to write online reviews. Online retailers would benefit from this study because the study examines how consumers come to the intention to write an online review; therefore, results may provide insight for marketers and practitioners to use for potential online marketing efforts

The Future of AI Accountability in the Financial Markets

Consumer interaction with the financial market ranges from applying for credit cards, to financing the purchase of a home, to buying and selling securities. And with each transaction, the lender, bank, and brokerage firm are likely utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) behind the scenes to augment their operations. While AI’s ability to process data at high speeds and in large quantities makes it an important tool for financial institutions, it is imperative to be attentive to the risks and limitations that accompany its use. In the context of financial markets, AI’s lack of decision-making transparency, often called the “black box problem,” along with AI’s dependence on quality data, present additional complexities when considering the aggregate effect of algorithms deployed in the market. Owing to these issues, the benefits of AI must be weighed against the particular risks that accompany the spread of this technology throughout the markets. Financial regulation, as it stands, is complex, expensive, and often involves overlapping regulations and regulators. Thus far, financial regulators have responded by publishing guidance and standards for firms utilizing AI tools, but they have stopped short of demanding access to source codes, setting specific standards for developers, or otherwise altering traditional regulatory frameworks. While regulators are no strangers to regulating new financial products or technology, fitting AI within the traditional frameworks of prudential regulation, registration requirements, supervision, and enforcement actions leaves concerning gaps in oversight. This Article examines the suitability of the current financial regulatory frameworks for overseeing AI in the financial markets. It suggests that regulators consider developing multi-faceted approaches to promote AI accountability. This Article recognizes the potential harms and likelihood for regulatory arbitrage if these regulatory gaps remain unattended and thus suggests focusing on key elements for future regulation—namely, the human developers and regulation of data to truly “hold AI accountable.” Therefore, holding AI accountable requires identifying the different ways in which sophisticated algorithms may cause harm to the markets and consumers if ineffectively regulated, and developing an approach that can flexibly respond to these broad concerns. Notably, this Article cautions against reliance on self-regulation and recommends that future policies take an adaptive approach to address current and future AI technologies

Prognosis and Therapy When Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia and Other “Good Risk” Acute Myeloid Leukemias Occur as a Therapy-Related Myeloid Neoplasm

Treatment for a pre-existing condition using chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunosuppressive therapy, or a combination of these modalities may lead to the devastating complication of therapy-related myelodysplastic syndrome or acute myeloid leukemia (t-MDS/t-AML), collectively known as therapy-related myeloid neoplasm (t-MN). This disorder arises as a direct consequence of mutational events induced by the primary treatment. The outcomes for these patients have been historically poor compared to people who develop AML de novo. Currently comprising 10–20% of all cases of AML, t-MN is relatively resistant to conventional leukemia therapies, and is associated with s ort survival times. Median life expectancy from diagnosis is about 8–10 months in most series. Although the spectrum of cytogenetic abnormalities in t-AML is similar to AML de novo, the frequency of unfavorable cytogenetics, such as a complex karyotype or deletion or loss of chromosomes 5 and/or 7, is considerably higher in t-MN. Two distinct groups of patients with t-MN have been described. The more common subtype, seen in about 75% of patients, typically occurs 5–7 years after first exposure to alkylating agents or radiation, is often preceded by a myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), and is frequently accompanied by clonal cytogenetic abnormalities such as the loss of all or part of chromosomes 5 or 7. Mutations of the P53 tumor suppressor gene are also common. The risk is related to total cumulative exposure over time to alkylating agents. In contrast, among individuals who develop t-AML after treatment with topoisomerase II inhibitors, the latency period to the development of t-AML is often only 1–3 years, antecedent MDS is rare, and gene rearrangements involving MLL at 11q23 or RUNX1/AML1 at 21q22 are common. It is now well recognized that APL and other subtypes of AML with balanced translocations sometimes occur as therapy-related myeloid neoplasms (t-MN) in patients who have previously received cytotoxic therapy or ionizing radiation therapy (RT). The most of this review will focus on these “good risk” leukemias, i.e. those with APL or inv(16)/t(16;16) or t(8;21)

BackgroundMany therapeutic options are available to glaucoma patients. One recent therapeutic option is minimally invasive glaucoma surgical (MIGS) devices. It is unclear how patients view different treatments and which patient-reported outcomes would be most relevant in patients with mild to moderate glaucoma. We developed a questionnaire for patients eligible for MIGS devices and a patient preference study to examine the value patients place on certain outcomes associated with glaucoma and its therapies.ObjectivesTo summarize the progress to date.MethodsQuestionnaire development: We drafted the questionnaire items based on input from one physician and four patient focus groups, and a review of the literature. We tested item clarity with six cognitive interviews. These items were further refined. Patient preference study: We identified important benefit and risk outcomes qualitatively using semi-structured, one-on-one interviews with patients who were eligible for MIGS devices. We then prioritized these outcomes quantitatively using best-worst scaling methods.ResultsQuestionnaire testing: Three concepts were deemed relevant for the questionnaire: functional limitations, symptoms, and psychosocial factors. We will evaluate the reliability and validity of the 52-item draft questionnaire in an upcoming field test. Patient preference study: We identified 13 outcomes that participants perceived as important. Outcomes with the largest relative importance weights were "adequate IOP control" and "drive a car during the day."ConclusionsPatients have the potential to steer clinical research towards outcomes that are important to them. Incorporating patients' perspectives into the MIGS device development and evaluation process may expedite innovation and availability of these devices

Protein kinase C and human uterine contractility

Abnormalities in uterine contractility are thought to contribute to several clinical problems, including preterm labor. A better understanding of the mechanisms controlling uterine activity would make it possible to propose more appropriate and effective management practices than those currently in use. Recent advances point to a role of the protein kinase C (PRKC) family in the regulation of uterine smooth muscle contraction at the end of pregnancy. In this review, we highlight recent work that explores the involvement of individual PRKC isoforms in cellular process, with an emphasis on the properties of PRKCZ isoform
