Reconnection of Stable/Unstable Manifolds of the Harper Map
The Harper map is one of the simplest chaotic systems exhibiting reconnection
of invariant manifolds. The method of asymptotics beyond all orders (ABAO) is
used to construct stable/unstable manifolds of the Harper map. When the
parameter changes to the reconnection threshold, the stable/unstable manifolds
are shown to acquire new oscillatory portion corresponding to the heteroclinic
tangle after the reconnection.Comment: 24 pages, 11 figure
Observation of Collective-Emission-Induced Cooling inside an Optical Cavity
We report the observation of collective-emission-induced, velocity-dependent
light forces. One third of a falling sample containing 3 x 10^6 cesium atoms
illuminated by a horizontal standing wave is stopped by cooperatively emitting
light into a vertically oriented confocal resonator. We observe decelerations
up to 1500 m/s^2 and cooling to temperatures as low as 7 uK, well below the
free space Doppler limit. The measured forces substantially exceed those
predicted for a single two-level atom.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Versal deformations of a Dirac type differential operator
If we are given a smooth differential operator in the variable its normal form, as is well known, is the simplest form
obtainable by means of the \mbox{Diff}(S^1)-group action on the space of all
such operators. A versal deformation of this operator is a normal form for some
parametric infinitesimal family including the operator. Our study is devoted to
analysis of versal deformations of a Dirac type differential operator using the
theory of induced \mbox{Diff}(S^1)-actions endowed with centrally extended
Lie-Poisson brackets. After constructing a general expression for tranversal
deformations of a Dirac type differential operator, we interpret it via the
Lie-algebraic theory of induced \mbox{Diff}(S^1)-actions on a special Poisson
manifold and determine its generic moment mapping. Using a Marsden-Weinstein
reduction with respect to certain Casimir generated distributions, we describe
a wide class of versally deformed Dirac type differential operators depending
on complex parameters
Calculating the Fine Structure of a Fabry-Perot Resonator using Spheroidal Wave Functions
A new set of vector solutions to Maxwell's equations based on solutions to
the wave equation in spheroidal coordinates allows laser beams to be described
beyond the paraxial approximation. Using these solutions allows us to calculate
the complete first-order corrections in the short-wavelength limit to
eigenmodes and eigenfrequencies in a Fabry-Perot resonator with perfectly
conducting mirrors. Experimentally relevant effects are predicted. Modes which
are degenerate according to the paraxial approximation are split according to
their total angular momentum. This includes a splitting due to coupling between
orbital angular momentum and spin angular momentum
Efficient solution approach to nonlinear optimal control problems and application to autonomous driving
This thesis deals with the numerical solution of dynamic nonlinear optimization problems and the development of new methods for their analysis in order to increase the efficiency of calculations. The operation of many natural and technical processes can be formulated as a nonlinear optimal control problem with constraints. Because of the increasing complexity, the solution of such a problem becomes challenging, in particular if it has to be obtained in real-time. The approach of combined multiple-shooting with collocation is efficient for solving such problems even if they contain fast dynamics. Thus, the first target of this work is to further improve its computational performance by providing an analytical Hessian and realizing a parallel-computing scheme. First, the formulas for computing the second-order sensitivities for the combined approach were derived. Using multiple-shooting, the solutions of model equations and evaluations of both first-order and second-order sensitivities can be provided independently for each time interval. Therefore, the second contribution is dedicated to the realization of a parallel computing scheme. As a result, a high speedup factor is attained through parallelization leading to reduction of computational expenses. As a third contribution, a novel control-variable correlation analysis was introduced, which indicates the necessity of employing the analytical Hessian instead of its approximation to efficiently solve an optimization problem. The numerical performance of these three contributions was demonstrated through challenging dynamic optimization problems including optimal control of a large-scale problem containing more than one thousand dynamic variables.
The combined method converts the continuous dynamic optimization problem into a nonlinear programming problem using a given number of time intervals. However, there have been no comprehensive rules to properly choose this number. Therefore, the fourth target of this work is devoted to the analysis of the underlying optimization problem with the special focus on the number of discrete time intervals. From the application point of view, the number of time intervals should be selected to simultaneously achieve the balance between the numerical accuracy and the computation load for solving the discretized optimization problem. Moreover, it is imperative to find the minimum number of time intervals to guarantee this balance. Thus, in the context of collocation on finite elements, a novel bilevel approach was proposed, where the outer loop is responsible for finding the minimum number of time intervals and the inner loop evaluates an upper limit of the approximation error by solving an error maximization problem by manipulating the control variables. In this way, a minimum number of time intervals can be determined guaranteeing a user defined error tolerance. Moreover, the impact of the initial conditions on the maximum approximation error is taken into account so that the determined number of intervals is valid for varying initial conditions and thus can be applied to nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC). Several case studies were conducted to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach. Both theoretically developed methods as well as the combined approach were implemented using open-source software as a generalized framework for testing purposes.
Finally, the developed methods were applied to autonomous driving in the NMPC framework. Autonomous driving is the current trend in the automotive industry with the aim of designing and producing fully automated or self-driving vehicles. Control design and field operation of autonomous vehicles impose several challenges and thus extensive as well as intensive research studies need to be made to cover the growing industrial demand. In this work, the vehicle motion was modeled as a dynamic optimization problem which is efficiently solved on-line. The successful test of the NMPC with two model vehicles (with scale of 1:5 and 1:8 to real vehicles) demonstrated the effectiveness of the developed approach

In this thesis the application of optimization techniques was presented for hierarchical (The IBM) and distributed (Han's algorithm) methods. The goal is to recognize which control technique fits best for controlling the water supply or other similar systems and to provide the comparison analysis of the methods.
Simulations were conducted using the software MATLABÂź. To solve the task the following approach was chosen. The search of the literature regarding the hierarchical and distributed methods has been provided and MPC technology has been studied. Debugging has been done on simplified water supply system and then these methods have been supplemented with the relevant description of the aggregated water supply system, which better reflects the processes occurring in the real situation.
Based on the research, the following inferences can be made. For optimization of systems with a small number of variables and couplings between them should be used a hierarchical structure, as these methods allow to achieve more accurate results in a shorter period of time. For systems with a large number of variables and couplings the distributed structure for optimization should be used. The number of variables and couplings, CPU frequency and usage affect the optimization process; hence the different CPU time for optimization is required. It should be noted that MATLABÂź is not the fastest interpreter. Distributed Hanâs algorithm, its improved, and modified versions are not yet fully investigated, especially with regard to convergence and parameter ??, meaning the way of its determination. In this paper for determination of this parameter Bisection Interval method was used. The disturbance (consumption) vector influences the optimization process, which means that under the different values of consumption the distributed algorithms can solve the same optimization problems with different CPU time demand.
The author proposes for further work:
-Use another programming language such as C++.
-Use a different method to find Ξ.
-Use a faster and more powerful computer.
-Use the Parallel Computing Toolboxâą in MATLABÂź.Ilmenau, Techn. Univ., Masterarbeit, 201
Coadjoint orbits of the Virasoro algebra and the global Liouville equation
The classification of the coadjoint orbits of the Virasoro algebra is
reviewed and is then applied to analyze the so-called global Liouville
equation. The review is self-contained, elementary and is tailor-made for the
application. It is well-known that the Liouville equation for a smooth, real
field under periodic boundary condition is a reduction of the SL(2,R)
WZNW model on the cylinder, where the WZNW field g in SL(2,R) is restricted to
be Gauss decomposable. If one drops this restriction, the Hamiltonian reduction
yields, for the field where is a constant,
what we call the global Liouville equation. Corresponding to the winding number
of the SL(2,R) WZNW model there is a topological invariant in the reduced
theory, given by the number of zeros of Q over a period. By the substitution
, the Liouville theory for a smooth is recovered in
the trivial topological sector. The nontrivial topological sectors can be
viewed as singular sectors of the Liouville theory that contain blowing-up
solutions in terms of . Since the global Liouville equation is
conformally invariant, its solutions can be described by explicitly listing
those solutions for which the stress-energy tensor belongs to a set of
representatives of the Virasoro coadjoint orbits chosen by convention. This
direct method permits to study the `coadjoint orbit content' of the topological
sectors as well as the behaviour of the energy in the sectors. The analysis
confirms that the trivial topological sector contains special orbits with
hyperbolic monodromy and shows that the energy is bounded from below in this
sector only.Comment: Plain TEX, 48 pages, final version to appear in IJMP
Loop Variables and the Virasoro Group
We derive an expression in closed form for the action of a finite element of
the Virasoro Group on generalized vertex operators. This complements earlier
results giving an algorithm to compute the action of a finite string of
generators of the Virasoro Algebra on generalized vertex operators. The main
new idea is to use a first order formalism to represent the infinitesimal group
element as a loop variable. To obtain a finite group element it is necessary to
thicken the loop to a band of finite thickness. This technique makes the
calculation very simple.Comment: 23 pages, PSU/T
Wave chaos in rapidly rotating stars
Effects of rapid stellar rotation on acoustic oscillation modes are poorly
understood. We study the dynamics of acoustic rays in rotating polytropic stars
and show using quantum chaos concepts that the eigenfrequency spectrum is a
superposition of regular frequency patterns and an irregular frequency subset
respectively associated with near-integrable and chaotic phase space regions.
This opens new perspectives for rapidly rotating star seismology and also
provides a new and potentially observable manifestation of wave chaos in a
large scale natural system.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Coadjoint Orbits of the Generalised Sl(2) Sl(3) Kdv Hierarchies
In this paper we develop two coadjoint orbit constructions for the phase
spaces of the generalised and KdV hierachies. This involves the
construction of two group actions in terms of Yang Baxter operators, and an
Hamiltonian reduction of the coadjoint orbits. The Poisson brackets are
reproduced by the Kirillov construction. From this construction we obtain a
`natural' gauge fixing proceedure for the generalised hierarchies.Comment: 37 page
