    The temperature dependence of the isothermal bulk modulus at 1 bar pressure

    It is well established that the product of the volume coefficient of thermal expansion and the bulk modulus is nearly constant at temperatures higher than the Debye temperature. Using this approximation allows predicting the values of the bulk modulus. The derived analytical solution for the temperature dependence of the isothermal bulk modulus has been applied to ten substances. The good correlations to the experiments indicate that the expression may be useful for substances for which bulk modulus data are lacking

    A modern Fizeau experiment for education and outreach purposes

    On the occasion of the laser's 50th anniversary, we performed a modern Fizeau experiment, measuring the speed of light with a laser beam passing over the city centre of Marseille. For a round trip distance of almost five kilometers, the measurement has reached an uncertainty of about 10−4^{-4}, mainly due to atmospheric fluctuations.     Inter-vehicle gap statistics on signal-controlled crossroads

    We investigate a microscopical structure in a chain of cars waiting at a red signal on signal-controlled crossroads. Presented is an one-dimensional space-continuous thermodynamical model leading to an excellent agreement with the data measured.Moreover, we demonstrate that an inter-vehicle spacing distribution disclosed in relevant traffic data agrees with the thermal-balance distribution of particles in the thermodynamical traffic gas (discussed in [1]) with a high inverse temperature (corresponding to a strong traffic congestion).     Scale Invariant Detection and Tracking of Elongated Structures

    International audienceThis paper describes a method for the detection of tracking of elongated structures that is robust under changes of scale and orientation. This method is based on extending the concept of scale invariant natural interest points to include elongated ridge structures. An operator is proposed that directly detects ridge points and provides an estimation of their elongation and orientation. A tracking process is used to follow elongated features over time and to robustly observe changes in scale and orientation. Changes in scale are used to directly estimate time to contact. Experimental results demonstrate that the method works well in cluttered scenes that are typical of urban environments

    PublishedJournal ArticleResearch Support, Non-U.S. Gov'tExcessive axial tension is very likely involved in the aetiology of tendon lesions, and the most appropriate indicator of tendon stress state is the true stress, the ratio of instantaneous load to instantaneous cross-sectional area (CSA). Difficulties to measure tendon CSA during tension often led to approximate true stress by assuming that CSA is constant during loading (i.e. by the engineering stress) or that tendon is incompressible, implying a Poisson's ratio of 0.5, although these hypotheses have never been tested. The objective of this study was to measure tendon CSA variation during quasi-static tensile loading, in order to assess the true stress to which the tendon is subjected and its Poisson's ratio. Eight equine superficial digital flexor tendons (SDFT, about 30cm long) were tested in tension until failure while the CSA of each tendon was measured in its metacarpal part by means of a linear laser scanner. Axial elongation and load were synchronously recorded during the test. CSA was found to linearly decrease with strain, with a mean decrease at failure of -10.7±2.8% (mean±standard deviation). True stress at failure was 7.1-13.6% higher than engineering stress, while stress estimation under the hypothesis of incompressibility differed from true stress of -6.6 to 2.3%. Average Poisson's ratio was 0.55±0.12 and did not significantly vary with load.     Computed tomography porosity and spherical indentation for determining cortical bone millimetre-scale mechanical properties

    The cortex of the femoral neck is a key structural element of the human body, yet there is not a reliable metric for predicting the mechanical properties of the bone in this critical region. This study explored the use of a range of non-destructive metrics to measure femoral neck cortical bone stiffness at the millimetre length scale. A range of testing methods and imaging techniques were assessed for their ability to measure or predict the mechanical properties of cortical bone samples obtained from the femoral neck of hip replacement patients. Techniques that can potentially be applied in vivo to measure bone stiffness, including computed tomography (CT), bulk wave ultrasound (BWUS) and indentation, were compared against in vitro techniques, including compression testing, density measurements and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy. Porosity, as measured by micro-CT, correlated with femoral neck cortical bone’s elastic modulus and ultimate compressive strength at the millimetre length scale. Large-tip spherical indentation also correlated with bone mechanical properties at this length scale but to a lesser extent. As the elastic mechanical properties of cortical bone correlated with porosity, we would recommend further development of technologies that can safely measure cortical porosity in vivo. Introductio

    Coupled spillway devices and energy dissipation system at St-Marc (France)

    The physical modeling tests for the rehabilitation of St-Marc Dam with a PKW are presented. A particular focus is put on the energy dissipation downstream from the PKW. The adopted solution is a leaned “ski-jump gutter” placed at the contact line between the downstream face of the dam and the natural foundation rock. It consists of a cylindrical profile, developed around an inclined axis and closed by a horizontal reach at the end of the structure. The aim of this solution is to guide the flow issued from the PKW to the stilling basin of the left existing spillway. The experimental tests consider various operation conditions which required pressure measurements at different impact zones. Structural design of the PKW is impacted by the fact that the concrete of the dam is subjected to a noteworthy blowing reaction. For that reason, the new structure could not be anchored in the existing dam. Thus, the spillway behaves as a gravity structure

    From Labyrinth to Piano Key Weirs – A historical review

    Free crest spillways are hydraulically efficient and safe in operation. Since their discharge capacity is directly proportional to the crest length several types have been developed with the purpose to increase the length of the latter. Among these types traditional labyrinth weir spillways have been studied and used for a long time. Their hydraulic performance and the effect of the involved geometrical parameters are well known. Nevertheless, their design still has to be based on experimentally derived and generalized performance curves. The recently introduced Piano Key weirs present clear advantages regarding hydraulic performance and construction costs compared to classical labyrinth weirs. Especially its small footprint makes the PK weir an efficient and cost effective solution for the increase of the flood releasing capacity at existing concrete gravity dams. Until today only preliminary design procedures are available which cannot yet be generalized. The still ongoing research on this complex hydraulic structure is a challenge for many scientists all over the world. Despite of this, several prototypes have been installed successfully over the last years on existing dams which enhance efficiently the flood release capacity
