Superconducting proximity effect in the presence of strong spin scattering
We report measurements of the four terminal temperature dependent resistance
of narrow Au wires implanted with ~100 ppm Fe impurities in proximity to
superconducting Al films. The wires show an initial decrease in resistance as
the temperature is lowered through the superconducting transition of the Al
films, but then show an increase in resistance as the temperature is lowered
further. In contrast to the case of pure Au wires in contact with a
superconducting film, the resistance at the lowest temperatures rises above the
normal state resistance. Analysis of the data shows that, in addition to
contributions from magnetic scattering and electron-electron interactions, the
temperature dependent resistivity shows a substantial contribution from the
superconducting proximity effect, which exists even in the presence of strong
spin scattering.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Inhomogeneous tachyon dynamics and the zipper
We study the process of inhomogeneous tachyon condensation in an intersecting
D1- and anti-D1-brane system using an effective tachyon DBI action. By
switching to the Hamiltonian formalism, we numerically solve for the dynamical
evolution of the system at a small intersection angle. We find that the decay
proceeds indefinitely and resembles the action of two zippers moving away from
the intersection point at the speed of light, zipping the branes together and
leaving inhomogeneous tachyon matter behind. We also discuss the range of
validity of our analysis and discuss the relation of the D1-anti-D1 description
of the system to one in terms of an intersecting D1-D1-brane pair.Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures. v2: added references; v3: more references,

Minimal Cost Reachability/Coverability in Priced Timed Petri Nets
Abstract. We extend discrete-timed Petri nets with a cost model that assigns token storage costs to places and firing costs to transitions, and study the minimal cost reachability/coverability problem. We show that the minimal costs are computable if all storage/transition costs are non-negative, while even the question of zero-cost coverability is undecidable in the case of general integer costs.
Enteric porcine viruses in farmed shellfish in Denmark
AbstractBivalve shellfish are at constant risk of being exposed to pathogens as a consequence of contamination of the shellfish beds with human or animal waste originating from sewage treatment plants or slurry fertilized fields. Consumption of contaminated oysters and mussels are frequently reported as causes of disease outbreaks caused by norovirus or hepatitis A virus. Other zoonotic pathogens such as hepatitis E virus (HEV), rotavirus (RV) and Salmonella from livestock may also be transmitted to shellfish via this route. In this study, 29 pooled samples from commercial Danish blue mussels were tested for porcine pathogens and indicator bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli). All samples tested negative for HEV, RV and Salmonella, whereas E. coli and the highly stable porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) were detected in eight and 12 samples, respectively. This is the first study to report the detection of PCV2 in commercial mussels. Based on the detection of PCV2 in clean areas with low prevalence of the normally applied fecal indicator E. coli, testing for PCV2 may be a more sensitive and robust specific porcine waste indicator in shellfish harvesting areas
D* Production in Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA
This paper presents measurements of D^{*\pm} production in deep inelastic
scattering from collisions between 27.5 GeV positrons and 820 GeV protons. The
data have been taken with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The decay channel
(+ c.c.) has been used in the study. The
cross section for inclusive D^{*\pm} production with
and is 5.3 \pms 1.0 \pms 0.8 nb in the kinematic region
{ GeV and }. Differential cross
sections as functions of p_T(D^{*\pm}), and are
compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations based on the photon-gluon
fusion production mechanism. After an extrapolation of the cross section to the
full kinematic region in p_T(D^{*\pm}) and (D^{*\pm}), the charm
contribution to the proton structure function is
determined for Bjorken between 2 10 and 5 10.Comment: 17 pages including 4 figure
Observation of Scaling Violations in Scaled Momentum Distributions at HERA
Charged particle production has been measured in deep inelastic scattering
(DIS) events over a large range of and using the ZEUS detector. The
evolution of the scaled momentum, , with in the range 10 to 1280
, has been investigated in the current fragmentation region of the Breit
frame. The results show clear evidence, in a single experiment, for scaling
violations in scaled momenta as a function of .Comment: 21 pages including 4 figures, to be published in Physics Letters B.
