E-commerce adoption by European firms: a cross-country multilevel analysis
E-commerce has been recognized as a new form of commerce and a fresh way to
identify, target, and retain customers. However, firms are often uncertain about investing
in the online channel as there is no guarantee this will result in consumers engaging in
online transactions. The studies on e-commerce adoption usually distinguish the
following three dimensions: environmental, technological, and organizational
(Rodríguez-Ardura & Meseguer-Artola, 2010; Zhu, Kraemer, & Xu, 2003). There are few
purely virtual firms, and the traditional channel and multichannels continue to be the
predominant types of retail channels used by firms (Zhu, Kraemer, & Xu, 2006; Li,
Troutt, Brandyberry, & Wang, 2011). This is due to the many obstacles faced by firms
adopting e-commerce; more specifically, they must overcome important technical,
cognitive, socio-political, economic, legal, managerial, financial, and cultural challenges
(Zhu, Kraemer, & Xu, 2003; Molla & Licker, 2005; Kshetri, 2007).
Given the heterogeneity of contexts, the factors constraining the adoption of ecommerce are not the same across firms and countries (digital divide). In light of this, our
focus will be on firms that have not yet taken the decision to adopt e-commerce due to a
set of restraints, and on analyzing the differences within- and between-countries. The
research question to be answered is: What are the inhibitors of e-commerce adoption in
each EU country? An analysis is made of the overall attitudes towards e-commerce
adoption in European firms, linking specific deterrents of e-commerce adoption (e.g.,
higher delivery costs or the nature of business) and the following retailer characteristics:
size, type of product, retail channels, and respondent’s position in the firm and
engagement in distance selling. To explore the overall attitude towards e-commerce
adoption, we propose a conceptual model that combines a two-level structure: the
individual level, which models the attitudes towards barriers that prevent adoption of the
online channel within each country; and the country level that highlights the similarities
(and differences) between EU countries. The statistical model combines factorial and
regression components. This model was estimated by the maximum likelihood method
using the MPlus 6.12. CFI is 0.989, TLI is 0.984, and RMSEA is 0.034; therefore, model
fit is excellent (Hu & Bentler, 1999).
Results show that aspects such as firm size and the job position of respondents do
not influence the attitudes toward e-commerce adoption. Three covariates point to theiv
aversion to e-commerce: telesales/call center retailing, direct retail channels, and selling
non-food products.
contextual (Rodríguez-Ardura & Meseguer-Artola, 2010; Zhu, Kraemer, & Xu, 2003).
culturais e organizacionais (Zhu, Kraemer, & Xu, 2003; Molla & Licker, 2005; Kshetri,
2007).
Used food oils: physical-chemical indicators of quality degradation
Comunicação apresentada em 11th Baltic Conference on Food Science and Technology “Food science and technology in achanging world” FOODBALT 2017 Conference Proceedings. Jelgava, LLUUsed food oil (UFO), designated as frying oil, is a residue. Degradation by reuse or during storage, may occur by contacting, chemical, enzymatic and microbiological pathways, but oxidation is a major concern of the industry, as it affects sensory and nutritional quality of edible oils, with potentially toxic compounds formation. In Portugal, UFO's main destination still is the sewerage system, an environmental problem and waste of raw material, which can be re-qualified for non-food uses. However, quality control applied to UFO's, often results into expensive analysis inappropriate for small laboratories and catering industry. This project, developed with the Musketeers Group Portugal co-promotion (2012-2016), aimed to identify low-cost physicochemical parameters for further implementation as UFO's Quality Degradation Indicators (QDI) indicating defects quickly and accurately. UFO's analysis was tested on the use, for industrial frying, and by degradation induced in the laboratory (frying and heat stability tests) by applying following parameters: moisture, water activity (a(w)), total acidity, peroxide index, iodine index, colour (CIE, CIE Lab), UV absorbency, total polar compounds and microbiological indicators. Internal procedures (ESAS) were validated, redefining working ranges and test conditions, as standards procedures did not provide reliable results for the entire life cycle of oils, whose profile changes with time and reuse. Results demonstrate significant differences with quick response parameters as Total Acidity, Peroxide Index and CIE Lab colour, outlined as QDI's. Moisture, aw and CIE Lab colour proved to be inadequate for this purpose. Iodine Index and UV Absorbency are more complex and time-consuming and were profiled as reference methods.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The purpose of this article is to present a brief review on the need for changes in nurses' undergraduate education concerning alcohol and drugs. Specialized literature makes it clear that nurses have difficulties giving care to psychoactive substance users as part of their functions in the various health care sites. This may be associated with a deficiency in formal education. In the face of the social importance concerning these related questions in the scope of research, care, and education, we made an attempt at deepening the study on this theme, which could contribute to changes in practice, care, and undergraduate nursing education.
Práticas do CPIV (1990).
regulamentações do mercado. The aim of this work is the study of the products named "vinegar", its production,
conceming technical and trading puiposes, as well as standards and definitions, specially conceming
wine and spirit vinegar. Vinegar literally means "sour wine", but the term applies now for those
products deliberately made by quite sophisticated methods, obtained exchisively by the biological
process of double fermentation, alcoholic and acetous, from liquids or other substances of
agricultural origin, broadly classified into fruits, cereais, sugar syrups and lastly alcohol Ahhough
the definition accords with the regulations ofmany countries, some allow for the use of the name
"vinegar" for dilution ofchemically produced acetic acid and for nrixtures ofdihited acetic acid with
vinegar. At the present time, CEN works on Drafts-CEN Standards for "Vinegar" and "Acetic Acid
Food Grade", based on standards adopted by the Codex Alimentarius (1987) and CPIV Code of
Practise (1990). Vinegar is never more than a comparatively small industiy in the industrialized
countries, its uses, now limited to food uses, lost some importance, except for vegetable pickled
products. Nowadays, vinegar industries try to accomplish the modem pattems of food quality,
marketing for new products and concepts like "Milenar Art" and "natural high quality fermented
product". Nevertheless, it seems that some of the original spirit was lost. This work analyzes the
problem in a less common ecological perspective, in order to study the possibilities of producing
"vinegar" from grape stillage (waste from brandy production), wich has been described as a
promising technique some years ago, but has never been reported ever since. In this work some
promismg qualitative data was found. To obtain quanthative results fiirther work should be done.
However, the product hás no legal existence and stands for a more prophious state ofaffairs on the
market regulations.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The frequency of smoking and problem drinking among general hospital inpatients in Brazil - using the AUDIT and Fagerström questionnaires
CONTEXT: Although the CAGE questionnaire is one of the most widely used alcohol screening instruments, it has been criticized for not identifying people who are drinking heavily or who have alcohol related problems but do not as yet show symptoms of alcohol dependence. The AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test) questionnaire was developed by WHO as a screening instrument specifically designed to identify problem drinkers, as well as those who were already dependent on alcohol. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to use the AUDIT and Fagerström questionnaires in a general hospital inpatient population to measure the frequency of problem drinking and nicotine dependence, and to see if levels varied between medical speciality. DESIGN: Retrospective cross-sectional study. SETTING: Federally funded public teaching hospital. SAMPLE: 275 inpatients from both genders. MAIN MEASUREMENTS: Socio-demographic data, AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test) and Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence. RESULTS: We interviewed 275 inpatients, 49% of whom were men and 51% women. Thirty-four patients were identified as cases by the Audit questionnaire; 22% of the male patients and 3% of the females. Just over 21% of inpatients were current smokers. The gastroenterology (26%) and general medicine (16%) inpatient units had the largest number of individual cases. CONCLUSIONS: Only by knowing the prevalence of alcohol abuse/dependence and nicotine dependence in a general hospital can we evaluate the need for a specialized liaison service to identify and treat these patients.CONTEXTO: Embora o CAGE seja um dos instrumentos de rastreamento do consumo alcoólico mais utilizado, o mesmo tem sofrido críticas por não identificar pessoas que possuem um consumo nocivo ou pessoas que apresentam problemas relacionados ao consumo alcoólico sem ter desenvolvido um quadro de dependência alcoólica. LOCAL: Hospital escola do serviço público federal, São Paulo, Brasil. AMOSTRA: 275 pacientes internados de ambos sexos. VARIÁVEIS ESTUDADAS: Dados sócio-demográficos, AUDIT e Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence. Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP) Escola Paulista de Medicina Alcohol and Drug Research UnitUNIFESP, EPM, Alcohol and Drug Research UnitSciEL
Can evolution of gut microbiota alter C. elegans longevity?
In nature, organisms interact with each other and with their environment, thus influencing evolutionary processes. One of the most prevalent ecological interactions is the relationship between host and microorganisms, namely the gut microbiota. This kind of interaction can be studied in model organisms such as C. elegans, since the nematode has been acknowledged as a major player in soil ecology and the worms’ gut bacteria can influence processes such as immune response, fecundity and longevity. C. elegans gut microbiota studies can be done with single bacterial species. The possibility of using pathogenic bacteria capable of colonizing the gut, such as S. marcescens, provides an excellent model to study hostmicroorganism interactions. Given this interplay between host and pathogenic bacteria, we aimed to investigate if gut microbiota evolution is directly related with changes in the host, particularly its longevity. For that, the worms’ gut microbiota was indirectly selected via C. elegans’ longevity. Moreover, we developed a protocol to create experimental conditions that allow us to test the impact of different levels of selection, since this theoretical perspective can be relevant in explaining the evolutionary processes of pathogen evolution. Our results show that by selecting gut microbiota it is possible to alter host longevity, which has never been reported in an animal host. Moreover, results indicate that our protocol creates different environments which allow for different levels of selection, which in turn are important for bacterial evolution. In fact, an increment in longevity was only seen when bacterial individual selection was minimized. In this work, we also found that bacterial competition can have an impact on C. elegans’ longevity, which is interesting since in nature worms are exposed to diverse bacteria that can compete with each other. Finally, we found that the gain of antibiotic resistance can influence the interaction between host and microorganisms
Agrio et Emulsio – development of new products with vinegar and sweetpotatoes
Agrio et Emulsio project (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-023583) develops in vinegar and food
emulsions areas. In line Agrio, vinegar technological ability enables the development of
multiple products, by fermentative and non-fermentative prototyping. Articulating
technological, laboratory and sensory tests and inspired both by the marinades in wine or
vinegar of the Mediterranean gastronomy and in the traditional Portuguese recipe of “drunk”
pear in red wine, two prototypes are undergoing final development, using sweet potato
cultivars (Ipomoea batatas) as main ingredient. A sweet and sour “drunk” pickle has been
developed by fresh pack pickling technology (without fermentation), using a spicy red wine
vinegar with cinnamon and black pepper, sweetened with brown sugar and added Gin. The
marinade was designed to be a ready-to-eat vegan product, with tofu and sweet potato
previously salted in brine and then submerged in the marinade liquid. The marinade matrix is
a diluted blend of red wine vinegar and regional liqueur wine from Ribatejo, flavored with red
pepper, herbs and spices. Pre-salting in brine, maturation and the final heat treatment are
fundamental for the quality and safety of both prototypes that were designed to provide
innovation and convenience: new products with long shelf life, aims the preservation of

Strawberry spread - New Food New Tech
This study is part of the Agrio et Emulsion project (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-023583), new food emulsions development. The product innovation results from the addition of a strawberry syrup to a spreadable cream of vegetable origin. Four formulations have been developed and eight syrup spreadable cream, being selected a prototype evaluated by an untrained panel taster. Physicochemical and proximal analyzes were performed: pH, total acidity, soluble solids, energy, moisture, crude protein, total lipids, carbohydrates, fiber and ash. A set of microbial populations was evaluated for microbiological stability control: enumeration of microorganisms at 30 ºC; enumeration of lipolytic microorganisms at 30 ºC; enumeration of Enterobacteriaceae; enumeration of osmophilic or osmotolerant yeasts and moulds; detection of spores of sulfite-reducing Clostridia. Two emerging technologies, ionizing irradiation and hyperpressure were used to study the stability of this new product. The results for the treated and untreated products showed no significant differences. The untreated samples remained stable and showed satisfactory microbiological characteristics under refrigeration at 5 °C after 3 months. Following these results, we conclude that product stability can be ensured by good manufacturing practices.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Abortion and sex-related conditions in substance-dependent Brazilian patients
Abortion is a very sensitive issue with relevance to public healthhowever few clinical or population-based studies have examined induced abortion among drug users. The study aims to evaluate the prevalence of induced abortion and sex-related conditions in an inpatient drug user sample. A cross-sectional design study was conducted in an inpatient addiction treatment unit in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with a sample of 616 patients, aged 18-75. Sociodemographic data, sexual behavior, and dependence severity were evaluated in relation to induced abortion. Approximately 27% of patients reported having a history of abortion (themselves in the case of women or partners in the case of men). The mean age was 34.6 +/- 10.9 years old, 34.9% diagnosed with severe alcohol dependence, 33% were diagnosed with severe levels of dependence on other drugs, 69.6% were diagnosed cocaine users (inhaled and smoked), and alcohol was the drug of choice for 30.4%. Chances of having a history of abortion is greater for women than for men with a odds ratio (OR = 2.995% CI: 1.75-4.76), (OR = 1.795% CI: 1.09-2.75) of no condom use(OR = 2.095% CI: 1.35-3.23) of history of STI and (OR = 3.295% CI: 1.29-5.73) use of morning-after pill. Drug-and alcohol-dependent patients have high-risk behaviours of sporadic use or no-condom use which contribute to unplanned pregnancy and induced abortion, making this vulnerable population a group which deserves special attention in sexual health prevention programmes and health promotion efforts for the reduction of induced abortion.Univ Fed Sao Paulo, Unidade Pesquisa Alcool & Drogas, Rua Botucatu 394, BR-04038001 Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Sao Paulo, Escola Enfermagem Ribeirao Preto, Ribeirao Preto, BrazilUniv Sao Paulo, Fac Filosofia Ciencias & Letras Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paulo, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Unidade Pesquisa Alcool & Drogas, Rua Botucatu 394, BR-04038001 Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilWeb of Scienc
