Bodies of Latent Potential : Abled Imaginary and National Belonging in Finnish Cultural Texts about Swimming

Drawing on Foucauldian genealogy and the methodological approaches of cultural studies, the authors address the question of how assumptions of citizenship have functioned in Finnish cultural texts on swimming. The analysis is developed from texts from the early twentieth century to the present day. Based on a theoretical approach that combines the perspectives of disability studies and post colonialism, the article traces how the ability to swim has been articulated as a common objective, and as latent potential in everyone. It also shows how assumptions of appropriate behaviour in public pools function in a way that reinforces specific visions of Finnishness. These discussions are rearticulated, and an approach is proposed that encapsulates the functioning of ‘latent potential’. The authors further develop theorizations of ableism that facilitate specific investigation of its connections with orientalism.Peer reviewe

Alikulkukäytävien toimivuus ja estetiikka

Opinnäytetyössä on tarkasteltu alikulkukäytävien estetiikkaa ja toimivuutta. Työssä on tutustuttu Imatran ja Lappeenrannan ympäristössä oleviin alikulkukäytäviin ja poimittu niistä estetiikkaan ja toimivuuteen vaikuttavia ominaisuuksia. Lisäksi tarkastelun yhteydessä on käsitelty niihin liittyviä määräyksiä, ohjeita, tyyppipiirustuksia ja omia näkemyksiä siitä, miten estetiikkaa ja toimivuutta voisi parantaa ja kehittää. Työ koostuu teoriaosasta ja siihen liittyvästä kuvamateriaalista. Aluksi on koottu taustatietoa sekä mietitty, miksi esimerkkikohde on ulkonäöltään tai toimivuudeltaan hyvä tai mikä seikka siitä tekee huonolaatuisen. Lopuksi on esitetty korjaustoimenpiteitä ja ideoita uuden suunnittelussa. Työn perusteella voidaan todeta, että estetiikkaan ja toimivuuteen vaikuttavia osatekijöitä on runsaasti ja ne kaikki tulisi ottaa huomioon, kun suunnitellaan uutta tai korjataan vanhaa alikulkukäytävää. Siltapaikkaluokituksella ohjataan yksilöllisen suunnittelun tasoa ja omaleimaisuutta.This graduate thesis dealswith the aesthetics and functionality of the underpasses. This report considered the underpasses in the area of the city of Lappeenranta and the city of Imatra. Differend features having an affect on aesthetics and functionality were studied. Specifications, instructions, typical types of drawings and own point of views to improve the aesthetics functionality were also considered. The report consists of the text and the pictures of examples. In the beginning there is some information about designing the outlook of underpasses and what causes the outlook of the object to be good or bad. There are also some methods of repairing and ideas for designing the new ones. We can add the amount of the individual design by classifying the lacations of the bridges

Equality in the making? : Roma and Traveller Minority Policies and Basic Education in Three Nordic Countries

The article examines policies intended to promote the basic education of Roma and Traveller minorities in Finland, Sweden, and Norway by analysing key national Roma and Traveller policy (n = 5) and education policy documents (n = 3). Analysis shows how the Finnish, Swedish, and Norwegian Roma policies translate the general policy aims of improving the social positioning of people identifying as Roma consistently into policy measures responding to the special needs of Roma pupils. These policy measures are validated by problem representations regarding Roma parents and families. All the policies also problematise the relationship between Roma and Traveller cultures and schools. It is argued that the focuses of the current policy measures constrain opportunities for a change in terms of equality.Peer reviewe

Becoming tolerable : Subject constitution of Roma mediators in Finnish schools

Although Finnish politics relating to the Roma tend to be perceived internationally as fairly successful, several obstacles exist for the Roma in education and the labour market. Training of Roma mediators has been actively promoted in Finland to improve the school performance and equality of Roma pupils. This article, based on ethnographic research, focuses on exploring how the current discursive terrain around the topics of tolerance and prejudice functions in the everyday work of mediators. It is argued that the present discourses in school expose the mediators to unequal power relations of tolerance. The terms for being tolerated are set by the potential tolerating actors, the school community. The mediators aim to supply knowledge about the Roma and try to address prejudices as representatives of the Roma. The study identified three different strategies that the mediators used when encountering prejudice: making sure one does not seem too different, parody and feigning naivety. The analysis suggests that the present discursive terrain creates obstacles to addressing inequalities, discrimination and racism in educational contexts. The responsibility for tackling discrimination is placed on the shoulders of individual Roma - not the whole school community.Peer reviewe

Vammaistutkimus koulutuspoliittisia ja antikapitalistisia kyvykkyysoletuksia haastamassa: Digitalisaation ajan ihmisteollisuus

Tässä artikkelissa tarkastelemme rinnakkain tulevaisuuteen suuntautuvan koulutuspoliittisen visioinnin ja autonomisen marxismin kykyoletuksia. Perustamme näkökulmamme kykyoletuksiin vammaistutkimukseen, erityisesti yhdysvaltalaisten vammaistutkijoiden Merri Lisa Johnsonin ja Robert McRuerin esittämään rampatieto-oppiin. Aineistoamme – digitalisaatiota käsitteleviä koulutuspoliittisia tekstejä ja autonomisen marxismin näkökulmasta työelämää tarkastelevia tutkimustekstejä – lähestymme kulttuurintutkimuksellisesta artikulaation teoriasta käsin. Analysoimme ensin oletuksia Opetushallituksen tuottamasta Osaaminen 2035 -raportista. Tämän jälkeen syvennämme analyysiamme tuomalla esiin yhteyksiä koulutuspoliittisten kykyoletusten ja autonomisen marxismin oletusten välillä. Esitämme, että nykyistä työelämää, jossa tarvitaan vaikeasti mitattavia yleisiä kykyjä, olisi helppoa analysoida soveltamalla autonomisen marxismin piirissä kehitettyä ideaa ihmisen yleisistä kyvyistä. Autonomisen marxismin mukaan yleiset kyvyt ovat oleellisia nykytaloudessa ja siksi riiston kohteita. Argumentoimme kuitenkin, että tällainen näkemys ei haasta kykyjen ideaa ja saattaa lopulta toimia antikapitalisia pyrkimyksiä vastaan

A Gendered View of Servant Leadership

No significant differences existed in the number of years of supervision or the participants’ perception of organizational change or stability. there were, however, significant differences between age groups and different work sectors with regard to servant leadership attitudes and behaviors. the results not only contribute to the literature concerning gender and servant leadership but also suggest that future research concerning servant leadership with respect to age and workplace sectors may be warranted
