    Labor Conflicts and Inefficiency of Relationship-Specific Investments: What is the Judge's Role?

    This paper presents a model of litigation in the context of a labor contract. The main objective of our analysis is to determine whether and under which conditions it is efficient that the judiciary arbiters a labor conflict and how the judge's decision should be made in order to be optimal. We embed this idea by considering a relationship between an employer and his worker, in which they can make (non contractible) relationship-specific investments. The optimality here refers to the best investment incentives of the parties allowing to maximize the generated surplus. We derive conclusions about the judge's behavior giving right investment incentives and determine how the division of the surplus should vary depending on several economic and social parameters.Labor Law, Litigation, Investment Incentives, Bargaining.

    In vitro modulation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen intermediate (ROI/RNI) production in Crassostrea gigas hemocytes

    International audienceBivalve hemocyte competence has been measured by quantifying functional characteristics, including reactive oxygen intermediate (ROI) production after activation with zymosan or phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). However, untreated oyster hemocytes also produce ROI and RNI (reactive nitrogen intermediates) after bleeding even if not stimulated by zymosan or PMA. Extensive investigation of this parameter by flow cytometry showed that, in vitro, ROI/RNI production by untreated hemocytes maintained in seawater appeared to be independent of both bacterial burden in the serum and non-self particle phagocytosis. ROI/ RNI production in granulocytes was higher than in hyalinocytes and could be intensified when activated by zymosan but not by PMA. Both cell types used NADPH-oxidase- and NO-synthase-like pathways to produce these molecules; the NO-synthase pathway seemed relatively more dominant in hyalinocytes and NADPH-oxidase appeared more effective in granulocytes. These results provide new insights for interpreting the modulation of ROI/RNI production by untreated hemocytes shown by other studies, relative to environmental conditions or physiological status of the oysters

    Étude de la marqueterie d’un secrétaire à gradin du xviiie siècle

    Le secrétaire à gradin (inv. V4081) conservé au musée du Louvre a fait l’objet d’une restauration en 2013 dans les ateliers du Centre de recherche et de restauration des musées de France (C2RMF), au pavillon de Flore. L’intervention s’est accompagnée d’une importante étude matérielle de la partie polychromée de la marqueterie. Les procédés de mise en œuvre de la couche picturale et de la couche de corne qui la protège ont nécessité d’adapter la méthodologie par le couplage de multiples techniques d’examens et d’analyses. Le recoupement de l’ensemble des données a permis de caractériser finement les matériaux utilisés pour deux interventions distinctes de polychromies et de mieux cerner les dates de leur mise en œuvre.The Louvre’s drop-front secretary desk with drawers (inv. V4081) was restored in 2013 in the workshops of the Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musées de France (C2RMF), in the Pavillon de Flore. The restoration went hand in hand with a detailed material study of the polychromed part of the marquetry. The manner of applying the layer of pigment and the veneer of horn that protected it required the methodology to be adapted through the interaction of multiple tests and analysis techniques. By cross-referencing all the data obtained, the materials used for the two separate polychromy procedures were distinguished and dated more precisely

    Association between IgM Anti-Herpes Simplex Virus and Plasma Amyloid-Beta Levels

    OBJECTIVE: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) reactivation has been identified as a possible risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and plasma amyloid-beta (Aβ) levels might be considered as possible biomarkers of the risk of AD. The aim of our study was to investigate the association between anti-HSV antibodies and plasma Aβ levels. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 1222 subjects (73.9 y in mean) from the Three-City cohort. IgM and IgG anti-HSV antibodies were quantified using an ELISA kit, and plasma levels of Aβ(1-40) and Aβ(1-42) were measured using an xMAP-based assay technology. Cross-sectional analyses of the associations between anti-HSV antibodies and plasma Aβ levels were performed by multi-linear regression. RESULTS: After adjustment for study center, age, sex, education, and apolipoprotein E-e4 polymorphism, plasma Aβ(1-42) and Aβ(1-40) levels were specifically inversely associated with anti-HSV IgM levels (β = -20.7, P=0.001 and β = -92.4, P=0.007, respectively). In a sub-sample with information on CLU- and CR1-linked SNPs genotyping (n=754), additional adjustment for CR1 or CLU markers did not modify these associations (adjustment for CR1 rs6656401, β = -25.6, P=0.002 for Aβ(1-42) and β = -132.7, P=0.002 for Aβ(1-40;) adjustment for CLU rs2279590, β = -25.6, P=0.002 for Aβ(1-42) and β = -134.8, P=0.002 for Aβ(1-40)). No association between the plasma Aβ(1-42)-to-Aβ(1-40) ratio and anti-HSV IgM or IgG were evidenced. CONCLUSION: High anti-HSV IgM levels, markers of HSV reactivation, are associated with lower plasma Aβ(1-40) and Aβ(1-42) levels, which suggest a possible involvement of the virus in the alterations of the APP processing and potentially in the pathogenesis of AD in human

    Comparing HLA Shared Epitopes in French Caucasian Patients with Scleroderma

    Although many studies have analyzed HLA allele frequencies in several ethnic groups in patients with scleroderma (SSc), none has been done in French Caucasian patients and none has evaluated which one of the common amino acid sequences, 67FLEDR71, shared by HLA-DRB susceptibility alleles, or 71TRAELDT77, shared by HLA-DQB1 susceptibility alleles in SSc, was the most important to develop the disease. HLA-DRB and DQB typing was performed for a total of 468 healthy controls and 282 patients with SSc allowing FLEDR and TRAELDT analyses. Results were stratified according to patient’s clinical subtypes and autoantibody status. Moreover, standardized HLA-DRß1 and DRß5 reverse transcriptase Taqman PCR assays were developed to quantify ß1 and ß5 mRNA in 20 subjects with HLA-DRB1*15 and/or DRB1*11 haplotypes. FLEDR motif is highly associated with diffuse SSc (χ2 = 28.4, p<10−6) and with anti-topoisomerase antibody (ATA) production (χ2 = 43.9, p<10−9) whereas TRAELDT association is weaker in both subgroups (χ2 = 7.2, p = 0.027 and χ2 = 14.6, p = 0.0007 respectively). Moreover, FLEDR motif- association among patients with diffuse SSc remains significant only in ATA subgroup. The risk to develop ATA positive SSc is higher with double dose FLEDR than single dose with respectively, adjusted standardised residuals of 5.1 and 2.6. The increase in FLEDR motif is mostly due to the higher frequency of HLA-DRB1*11 and DRB1*15 haplotypes. Furthermore, FLEDR is always carried by the most abundantly expressed ß chain: ß1 in HLA DRB1*11 haplotypes and ß5 in HLA-DRB1*15 haplotypes
