An alarming rise of obesity in adolescents has been observed, placing them at risk of developing resistance to insulin (IR) and its adverse metabolic consequences such as diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2), metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. Objective: To know the prevalence of obesity, and the levels of glucose, insulin and HOMA-IR and its association with the BMIz, waist circumference and the pubertal stage in a random sample of adolescents. Materials and methods: 292 adolescents between 12 and 15 years (152 female and 140 male), whose anthropometric measurements (weight, height and waist circumference) were taken, body mass index calculated and Z-score determined. Blood glucose and insulin levels were evaluated from a sample of blood and their HOMA-IR was determined. Results: The results showed that 32.5% were obese, 22.3% were overweight and 23.6% showed adolescent central obesity. Glucose levels (p = 0.016), insulin (p = 0.0001) and HOMA-IR (p = 0.0001) showed significant differences in the group with obesity. Values of the three parameters were increased with the stage of puberty. We found significant differences in the levels of glucose (p = 0.0388), insulin (p = 0.0005) and HOMA-IR (p = 0.0001) between the prepubertal and postpubertal stages

A SIMPLE METHOD FOR THE SYNTHESIS OF CdS NANOPARTICLES USING A NOVEL SURFACTANT

In this work, we present the synthesis and characterization of CdS nanoparticles suitable for semiconductor applications using a simple and manufacturable process. The solution based process was synthetized at room temperature using cadmium nitrate tetrahydrate (Cd (NO 3 ) 2 .4 H 2 O 0.1 M) and a Thioacetamide (C 2 H 5 NS (TA) 0.5 M) as source of cadmium and sulfur, respectively. The effect of the concentration of polyethyleneimine (PEI) as a surface stabilizer or surfactant for growth control of CdS nanoparticles was studied. The PEI concentrations were varied as 1 M, 0.5 M , 0.25 M , and 0.01 M respectively. Optical properties of CdS were analyzed by UV-Vis spectroscopy; functional groups were identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and the surface morphology by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The particle size for CdS nanoparticles were less than 80 nm. An increase in size was observed inversely to the PEI concentration

Endurecimiento de la frontera México-Estados Unidos y su impacto en la recepción de remesas. El caso de Ciudad Juárez en el contexto de Covid-19

    Get PDF
Hardening of the Mexico-United States border and its impact on the remittances reception. The case of Ciudad Juárez in the context of Covid-19 Abstract This article´s  objective was to determine the impact of the hardening of the Mexico-United States border, particularly by the partial closure of the border due to Covid-19 –the migrant’s conglomeration in the city and the limitation of cross-border mobility– in the reception of remittances in Ciudad Juárez. Applying linear regression model with ordinary least squares method and the Pearson and Spearman correlation analysis, we estimate the relationship between remittances with the number of border crossings and immigrant’s concentration in the city. The results show that the only statistically significant variable was the partial closure of the border, through a decrease in the number of crossings, which has a negative relationship with the receipt of remittances in the locality, i.e., the fewer the number of crossings, the greater the receipt of remittances. This article aims to know what is the factors that affect the low associative capacity of the rural producers of San Buenaventura Coahuila and for this purpose an investigation was carried out, a documentary of a bibliographic type using the existing literature of assemblies were held in the Santa Gertrudis congregation of San Buenaventura to know the degree of associativity of this community by throwing as a result the low capacity for association that due to their bad experiences with past associations and the habit of working individually is the reason that they are very difficult associate, depriving itself of the indisputable benefits of forming a well-managed grouping, choosing the appropriate associative form, with external advice, that allows its permanence until its consolidation

Study of reinforcing steel corrosion behaviour treated by bluing and cerium chemical conversion treatments, part I: Conventional electrochemical techniques

In this work, a double-layered chemical conversion coating, which consists of a bluing layer followed by a cerium oxide layer, was applied to reinforcing steel (RS) to increase its corrosion resistance under field conditions. The corrosion behaviour of the blued reinforcing steel specimens (BRS) in 3% sodium chloride with and without the top layer of cerium oxide was assessed by open-circuit potential, linear polarisation resistance, potentiodynamic polarisation curves, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy were used to characterise the blued and cerium conversion layers. The best electrochemical behaviour of RS was attained by the bluing sample sealed for 10 min in 0.001 M CeCl (B10 + cerium chemical conversion treatments). Under these conditions, the potential shifted in the noble direction from E to approximately 600–800 mV and the corrosion current density decreased by five orders of magnitude as compared to bare RS.The authors wish to thank the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, for funding this work under the project: IPN-SIP 20141234 and 20151158, Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACyT), and the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Metalúrgicas (CENIM-CSIC, Madrid Spain) for the support given to this project.Peer Reviewe
