Falicov-Kimball model and the problem of electronic ferroelectricity
The density matrix renormalization group method is used to examine
possibilities of electronic ferroelectricity in the spinless Falicov-Kimball
model. The model is studied for a wide range of parameters including weak and
strong interactions as well as the symmetric and unsymmetric case. In all
examined cases the -expectation value vanishes for vanishing
hybridization , indicating that the spinless Falicov-Kimball model does not

The Tensor to Scalar Ratio of Phantom Dark Energy Models
We investigate the anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background in a class
of models which possess a positive cosmic energy density but negative pressure,
with a constant equation of state w = p/rho < -1. We calculate the temperature
and polarization anisotropy spectra for both scalar and tensor perturbations by
modifying the publicly available code CMBfast. For a constant initial curvature
perturbation or tensor normalization, we have calculated the final anisotropy
spectra as a function of the dark energy density and equation of state w and of
the scalar and tensor spectral indices. This allows us to calculate the
dependence of the tensor-to-scalar ratio on w in a model with phantom dark
energy, which may be important for interpreting any future detection of
long-wavelength gravitational waves.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Urinary Deoxynivalenol Is Correlated with Cereal Intake in Individuals from the United Kingdom
Background
Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a toxic fungal metabolite that frequently contaminates cereal crops. DON is toxic to animals, but the effects on humans are poorly understood, in part because exposure estimates are of limited precision.
Objectives
In this study we used the U.K. adult National Diet and Nutrition Survey to compare 24-hr urinary DON excretion with cereal intake.
Methods
One hundred subjects were identified for each of the following cereal consumption groups: low (mean, 107 g cereal/day; range, 88–125), medium (mean, 179 g/day; range, 162–195) and high (mean, 300 g/day; range, 276–325). DON was analyzed in 24-hr urine samples by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry after purification on immunoaffinity columns.
Results
DON was detected in 296 of 300 (98.7%) urine samples. Cereal intake was significantly associated with urinary DON (p < 0.0005), with the geometric mean urinary levels being 6.55 μg DON/day [95% confidence interval (CI), 5.71–7.53]; 9.63 μg/day (95% CI, 8.39–11.05); and 13.24 μg/day (95% CI, 11.54–15.19) for low-, medium-, and high-intake groups, respectively. In multivariable analysis, wholemeal bread (p < 0.0005), white bread (p < 0.0005), “other” bread (p < 0.0005), buns/cakes (p = 0.003), high-fiber breakfast cereal (p = 0.016), and pasta (p = 0.017) were significantly associated with urinary DON. Wholemeal bread was associated with the greatest percent increase in urinary DON per unit of consumption, but white bread contributed approximately twice as much as wholemeal bread to the urinary DON levels because it was consumed in higher amounts.
Conclusion
The majority of adults in the United Kingdom appear to be exposed to DON, and on the basis of the urinary levels, we estimate that some individuals may exceed the European Union (EU) recommended maximum tolerable daily intake of 1,000 ng DON/kg (bw). This exposure biomarker will be a valuable tool for biomonitoring as part of surveillance strategies and in etiologic studies of DON and human disease risk
Nuclear structure of Ac-231
The low-energy structure of 231Ac has been investigated by means of gamma ray
spectroscopy following the beta-decay of 231Ra. Multipolarities of 28
transitions have been established by measuring conversion electrons with a
mini-orange electron spectrometer. The decay scheme of 231Ra --> 231Ac has been
constructed for the first time. The Advanced Time Delayed beta-gamma-gamma(t)
method has been used to measure the half-lives of five levels. The moderately
fast B(E1) transition rates derived suggest that the octupole effects, albeit
weak, are still present in this exotic nucleus
HyperCP: A high-rate spectrometer for the study of charged hyperon and kaon decays
The HyperCP experiment (Fermilab E871) was designed to search for rare
phenomena in the decays of charged strange particles, in particular CP
violation in and hyperon decays with a sensitivity of
. Intense charged secondary beams were produced by 800 GeV/c protons
and momentum-selected by a magnetic channel. Decay products were detected in a
large-acceptance, high-rate magnetic spectrometer using multiwire proportional
chambers, trigger hodoscopes, a hadronic calorimeter, and a muon-detection
system. Nearly identical acceptances and efficiencies for hyperons and
antihyperons decaying within an evacuated volume were achieved by reversing the
polarities of the channel and spectrometer magnets. A high-rate
data-acquisition system enabled 231 billion events to be recorded in twelve

Cardiovascular risk estimation and eligibility for statins in primary prevention comparing different strategies.
Recommendations for statin use for primary prevention of coronary heart disease (CHD) are based on estimation of the 10-year CHD risk. It is unclear which risk algorithm and guidelines should be used in European populations. Using data from a population-based study in Switzerland, we first assessed 10-year CHD risk and eligibility for statins in 5,683 women and men 35 to 75 years of age without cardiovascular disease by comparing recommendations by the European Society of Cardiology without and with extrapolation of risk to age 60 years, the International Atherosclerosis Society, and the US Adult Treatment Panel III. The proportions of participants classified as high-risk for CHD were 12.5% (15.4% with extrapolation), 3.0%, and 5.8%, respectively. Proportions of participants eligible for statins were 9.2% (11.6% with extrapolation), 13.7%, and 16.7%, respectively. Assuming full compliance to each guideline, expected relative decreases in CHD deaths in Switzerland over a 10-year period would be 16.4% (17.5% with extrapolation), 18.7%, and 19.3%, respectively; the corresponding numbers needed to treat to prevent 1 CHD death would be 285 (340 with extrapolation), 380, and 440, respectively. In conclusion, the proportion of subjects classified as high risk for CHD varied over a fivefold range across recommendations. Following the International Atherosclerosis Society and the Adult Treatment Panel III recommendations might prevent more CHD deaths at the cost of higher numbers needed to treat compared with European Society of Cardiology guidelines
Limits on the gravity wave contribution to microwave anisotropies
We present limits on the fraction of large angle microwave anisotropies which
could come from tensor perturbations. We use the COBE results as well as
smaller scale CMB observations, measurements of galaxy correlations, abundances
of galaxy clusters, and Lyman alpha absorption cloud statistics. Our aim is to
provide conservative limits on the tensor-to-scalar ratio for standard
inflationary models. For power-law inflation, for example, we find T/S<0.52 at
95% confidence, with a similar constraint for phi^p potentials. However, for
models with tensor amplitude unrelated to the scalar spectral index it is still
