AbstractA direct, natural extension of Hooke’s law to finite strain was achieved by R. Hill in 1978, employing the notion of work-conjugate measures of stress and strain. With Seth-Hill (Doyle-Ericksen) class of finite strain measures, this extension actually defines a broad class of compressible hyperelastic materials at finite strain, each of which retains the simple linear structure of Hooke’s law as stress–strain relationship. Several known simple elasticity models at finite strain are included as its particular examples. With a novel idea of utilizing a suitable parametric variable, here we present a unified study of the free-end torsion problem (Poynting effects) of thin-walled cylindrical tubes made of the foregoing Hill’s class of Hookean type hyperelastic materials. We show that it is possible to derive a unified exact solution to the nonlinear coupling equations relating the torque (the shear stress) and the controlling deformation quantities including, in particular, the axial length change. Discussions and comparisons concerning various Hookean type elasticity models are made based on the exact solution obtained

Hill’s class of compressible elastic materials and finite bending problems: Exact solutions in unified form

AbstractHill (1978) proposed a natural extension of Hooke’s law to finite deformations. With all Seth-Hill finite strains, Hill’s natural extension presents a broad class of compressible hyperelastic materials over the whole deformation range. We show that a number of known Hookean type finite hyperelasticity models are included as particular cases in Hill’s class and that Bell’s and Ericksen’s constraints may be derived as natural consequences from Hill’s class subjected to internal constraints. Also we present a unified study of finite bending problems for elastic Hill materials. To date exact results are available for certain particular classes of compressible elastic materials, which do not cover Hill’s class. Here, with a novel idea of circumventing the strong nonlinearity we show that it is possible to derive exact solutions in unified form for the whole class of elastic Hill materials. Reduced results are also given for cases subjected to internal constraints

© 1986-2012 IEEE.A dynamic particle swarm optimization with learning strategy (DPSO-LS) is proposed for key parameter estimation for permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs), where the voltage-source inverter (VSI) nonlinearities are taken into account in the parameter estimation model and can be estimated simultaneously with other machine parameters. In the DPSO-LS algorithm, a novel movement modification equation with variable exploration vector is designed to effectively update particles, enabling swarms to cover large areas of search space with large probability and thus the global search ability is enhanced. Moreover, a Gaussian-distribution-based dynamic opposition-based learning strategy is developed to help the pBest jump out local optima. The proposed DPSO-LS can significantly enhance the estimator model accuracy and dynamic performance. Finally, the proposed algorithm is applied to multiple parameter estimation including the VSI nonlinearities of a PMSM. The performance of DPSO-LS is compared with several existing PSO algorithms, and the comparison results show that the proposed parameters estimation method has better performance in tracking the variation of machine parameters effectively and estimating the VSI nonlinearities under different operation conditions

Preparation, Properties, and Microstructure of Graphite Powder-Containing Conductive Concrete

Conductive concrete not only retains the advantages of ordinary concrete but also possesses high electrical conductivity. It can be applied to snow and ice control on the roads. In preparing the conductive concrete, sand as the conductive fine aggregate was replaced with graphite powder. Its properties and microstructure were also investigated. The conductive concrete strength is shown to decrease with a graphite powder ratio. The conductive concrete resistivity goes down with the powder fineness and content; the temperature grows after electrification, and the concrete exhibits a high heating effect. Graphite powder exerts little influence on the hydration products of the concrete. With an increase in the content and fineness of graphite powder, its filling efficiency becomes rather helpful to form the conductive path. A wide field of view Cherenkov/fluorescence telescope array is one of the main components of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory project. To serve as Cherenkov and fluorescence detectors, a flexible and mobile design is adopted for easy reconfiguring of the telescope array. Two prototype telescopes have been constructed and successfully run at the site of the ARGO-YBJ experiment in Tibet. The features and performance of the telescopes are presented

Green function techniques in the treatment of quantum transport at the molecular scale

The theoretical investigation of charge (and spin) transport at nanometer length scales requires the use of advanced and powerful techniques able to deal with the dynamical properties of the relevant physical systems, to explicitly include out-of-equilibrium situations typical for electrical/heat transport as well as to take into account interaction effects in a systematic way. Equilibrium Green function techniques and their extension to non-equilibrium situations via the Keldysh formalism build one of the pillars of current state-of-the-art approaches to quantum transport which have been implemented in both model Hamiltonian formulations and first-principle methodologies. We offer a tutorial overview of the applications of Green functions to deal with some fundamental aspects of charge transport at the nanoscale, mainly focusing on applications to model Hamiltonian formulations.Comment: Tutorial review, LaTeX, 129 pages, 41 figures, 300 references, submitted to Springer series "Lecture Notes in Physics

    The σ\sigma pole in J/ψωπ+πJ/\psi \to \omega \pi^+ \pi^-

Using a sample of 58 million J/ψJ/\psi events recorded in the BESII detector, the decay J/ψωπ+πJ/\psi \to \omega \pi^+ \pi^- is studied. There are conspicuous ωf2(1270)\omega f_2(1270) and b1(1235)πb_1(1235)\pi signals. At low ππ\pi \pi mass, a large broad peak due to the σ\sigma is observed, and its pole position is determined to be (541±39)(541 \pm 39) - ii (252±42)(252 \pm 42) MeV from the mean of six analyses. The errors are dominated by the systematic errors.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, submitted to PL

Single Spin Asymmetry ANA_N in Polarized Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering at s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV

    Get PDF
We report a high precision measurement of the transverse single spin asymmetry ANA_N at the center of mass energy s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV in elastic proton-proton scattering by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The ANA_N was measured in the four-momentum transfer squared tt range 0.003t0.0350.003 \leqslant |t| \leqslant 0.035 \GeVcSq, the region of a significant interference between the electromagnetic and hadronic scattering amplitudes. The measured values of ANA_N and its tt-dependence are consistent with a vanishing hadronic spin-flip amplitude, thus providing strong constraints on the ratio of the single spin-flip to the non-flip amplitudes. Since the hadronic amplitude is dominated by the Pomeron amplitude at this s\sqrt{s}, we conclude that this measurement addresses the question about the presence of a hadronic spin flip due to the Pomeron exchange in polarized proton-proton elastic scattering.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
