Adaptation and development pathways for different types of farmers
One of the greatest challenges humanity faces is feeding the world's human population in a sustainable, nutritious, equitable and ethical way under a changing climate. Urgent transformations are needed that allow farmers to adapt and develop while also being climate resilient and contributing minimal emissions. This paper identifies several illustrative adaptation and development pathways, recognising the variety of starting points of different types of farmers and the ways their activities intersect with global trends, such as population growth, climate change, rapid urbanisation dietary changes, competing land uses and the emergence of new technologies. The feasibility of some pathways depends on factors such as farm size and land consolidation. For other pathways, particular infrastructure, technology, access to credit and market access or collective action are required. The most viable pathway for some farmers may be to exit agriculture altogether, which itself requires careful management and planning. While technology offers hope and opportunity, as a disruptor, it also risks maladaptations and can create tradeoffs and exacerbate inequalities, especially in the context of an uncertain future. For both the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2015 Paris Agreement to be achieved, a mix of levers that combine policy, technology, education and awareness-raising, dietary shifts and financial/economic mechanisms is required, attending to multiple time dimensions, to assist farmers along different pathways. Vulnerable groups such as women and the youth must not be left behind. Overall, strong good governance is needed at multiple levels, combining top-down and bottom-up processes
Climate change adaptation planning and cross-sectoral policy coherence in southern Africa
The post-2015 development agenda requires policy coherence, where achievement
of development goals in one sector does not undermine the achievement of the
goals of another. It also recognises that cross-cutting issues like adaptation
to climate change need to be mainstreamed across multiple sectors. This paper
presents a policy analysis using the cases of Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia. It
analyses the water management and agricultural strategies and approaches
identified in a variety of policies and plans. These include national sector
policies for water and agriculture, National Development Plans, and climate
change policies and strategies, including National Adaptation Programmes of
Action and the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions submitted prior to
the 2015 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of
the Parties. It assesses the extent to which policies are coherent with one
another with regard to their treatment of climate change adaptation using
Qualitative Document Analysis. Findings identify that sector policies show
some degree of cross-thematic coherence, in particular around their
acknowledgement of the importance to address disaster management of floods and
droughts. However, policy statements are typified by a relative lack of
recognition of the need to develop supporting instruments and strategies that
address climate adaptation needs over longer timeframes. Climate change
policies explicitly call for significant investment in adaptation from the
international community. Where coherence between sector and climate policies
and strategies is strongest, the more recent climate policies largely
repackage existing sectoral policy statements. These findings can be
understood in the context of the uncertainty of climate change impacts for the
longer term (for which a wider variety of adaptations are identified),
alongside more event-driven disaster management planning where the impacts are
more immediate and obviously evident. This prioritisation is also linked to
development needs and the short-term nature of political cycles and economic
gain. For climate-resilient policy decision-making to make further headway, we
argue that governments need to embrace cross-sectoral planning more pro-
actively in order to foster greater policy coherence and to deliver more
climate resilient agriculture and water management
Challenges and solutions for food waste-based biogas production for energy generation in Malaysia:a review
Food waste can be anaerobically digested for biogas generation resulting in more sustainable waste management than using landfill, as well as providing clean energy. This paper reviews the challenges faced globally in using food waste-based biogas production for energy generation. It identifies feasible solutions for each challenge based on real-world case study scenarios and pilot plant studies, exploring their implications for Malaysia. Identified challenges and solutions are analysed under five headings: environmental (challenges: 2, solutions: 3), institutional and legal (challenges: 3; solutions: 6), economic and resourcing (challenges: 5; solutions: 9), technical (challenges: 4; solutions: 7) and social and cultural (challenges: 2; solutions: 3) categories. Key findings include that: (1) waste collection distance to the facility should be <10 km to reduce environmental impacts (as implemented in Singapore); (2) it is vital to set a proper division of labour and nationwide standards, as well as increasing food waste treatment facilities (as implemented in China); (3) installation of low cost digesters and reduced operational costs can help to tackle economic challenges (as shown in examples from China and South Korea), while initiatives to obtain a constant supply of food waste can help address resourcing challenges; (4) co-digestion and pre-treatment of food waste are crucial to avoid technical errors (as seen in China and South Korea) and (5) regular engagement with the community can help create awareness on food waste segregation (as demonstrated in the United Kingdom). Tackling the challenges within and across categories could help policymakers to improve existing waste management and renewable energy policies in Malaysia. Solutions given for each challenge emerging from this study offer important inputs to food waste-based biogas production both in Malaysia and globally
The Vibration Ring
The vibration ring was conceived as a driveline damping device to prevent structure-borne noise in machines. It has the appearance of a metal ring, and can be installed between any two driveline components like an ordinary mechanical spacer. Damping is achieved using a ring-shaped piezoelectric stack that is poled in the axial direction and connected to an electrical shunt circuit. Surrounding the stack is a metal structure, called the compression cage, which squeezes the stack along its poled axis when excited by radial driveline forces. The stack in turn generates electrical energy, which is either dissipated or harvested using the shunt circuit. Removing energy from the system creates a net damping effect. The vibration ring is much stiffer than traditional damping devices, which allows it to be used in a driveline without disrupting normal operation. In phase 1 of this NASA Seedling Fund project, a combination of design and analysis was used to examine the feasibility of this concept. Several designs were evaluated using solid modeling, finite element analysis, and by creating prototype hardware. Then an analytical model representing the coupled electromechanical response was formulated in closed form. The model was exercised parametrically to examine the stiffness and loss factor spectra of the vibration ring, as well as simulate its damping effect in the context of a simplified driveline model. The results of this work showed that this is a viable mechanism for driveline damping, and provided several lessons for continued development
The influence of trees, shrubs, and grasses on microclimate, soil carbon, nitrogen, and CO2 efflux:Potential implications of shrub encroachment for Kalahari rangelands
Shrub encroachment is a well-documented phenomenon affecting many of the world's drylands. The alteration of vegetation structure and species composition can lead to changes in local microclimate and soil properties which in turn affect carbon cycling. The objectives of this paper were to quantify differences in air temperatures, soil carbon, nitrogen, and CO2 efflux under trees (Vachellia erioloba), shrubs (Grewia flava), annual and perennial grasses (Schmidtia kalahariensis and Eragrostis lehmanniana) collected over three seasons at a site in Kgalagadi District, Botswana, in order to determine the vegetation-soil feedback mechanism affecting the carbon cycle. Air temperatures were logged continuously and soil CO2 efflux was determined throughout the day and evening using closed respiration chambers and an infrared gas analyser. There were significant differences in soil carbon, total nitrogen, CO2 efflux, light and temperatures beneath the canopies of trees, shrubs and grasses. Daytime air temperatures beneath shrubs and trees were cooler compared to grass sites, particularly in summer months. Night time air temperatures under shrubs and trees were, however, warmer than at the grass sites. There was also significantly more soil carbon, nitrogen and CO2 efflux under shrubs and trees compared to grasses. Whilst the differences observed in soils and microclimate may reinforce the competitive dominance of shrubs and present challenges to strategies designed to manage encroachment they should not be viewed as entirely negative. Peer mentorship and positive effects on student mentor and mentee retention and academic success
This study examined how the introduction of peer mentorship in an undergraduate health and social welfare programme at a large northern university affected student learning. Using an ethnographic case study approach, the study draws upon data collected from a small group of mentors and their mentees over a period of one academic year using interviews, reflective journals, assessment and course evaluation data.
Analysis of the data collected identified a number of key findings: peer mentorship improves assessment performance for both mentee and mentor; reduces stress and anxiety, enhances participation and engagement in the academic community, and adds value to student outcomes
Climate change adaptation and cross-sectoral policy coherence in southern Africa
To be effective, climate change adaptation needs to be mainstreamed across multiple sectors and greater policy coherence is essential. Using the cases of Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia, this paper investigates the extent of coherence in national policies across the water and agriculture sectors and to climate change adaptation goals outlined in national development plans. A two-pronged qualitative approach is applied using Qualitative Document Analysis of relevant policies and plans, combined with expert interviews from non-government actors in each country. Findings show that sector policies have differing degrees of coherence on climate change adaptation, currently being strongest in Zambia and weakest in Tanzania. We also identify that sectoral policies remain more coherent in addressing immediate-term disaster management issues of floods and droughts rather than longer-term strategies for climate adaptation. Coherence between sector and climate policies and strategies is strongest when the latter has been more recently developed. However to date, this has largely been achieved by repackaging of existing sectoral policy statements into climate policies drafted by external consultants to meet international reporting needs and not by the establishment of new connections between national sectoral planning processes. For more effective mainstreaming of climate change adaptation, governments need to actively embrace longer-term cross-sectoral planning through cross-Ministerial structures, such as initiated through Zambiaâs Interim Climate Change Secretariat, to foster greater policy coherence and integrated adaptation planning

The XWS open access catalogue of extreme European windstorms from 1979 to 2012
The XWS (eXtreme WindStorms) catalogue consists of storm tracks and model-generated maximum 3 s wind-gust footprints for 50 of the most extreme winter windstorms to hit Europe in the period 1979â2012. The catalogue is intended to be a valuable resource for both academia and industries such as (re)insurance, for example allowing users to characterise extreme European storms, and validate climate and catastrophe models. Several storm severity indices were investigated to find which could best represent a list of known high-loss (severe) storms. The best-performing index was Sft, which is a combination of storm area calculated from the storm footprint and maximum 925 hPa wind speed from the storm track. All the listed severe storms are included in the catalogue, and the remaining ones were selected using Sft. A comparison of the model footprint to station observations revealed that storms were generally well represented, although for some storms the highest gusts were underestimated. Possible reasons for this underestimation include the model failing to simulate strong enough pressure gradients and not representing convective gusts.
A new recalibration method was developed to estimate the true distribution of gusts at each grid point and correct for this underestimation. The recalibration model allows for storm-to-storm variation which is essential given that different storms have different degrees of model bias. Anyone who is interested in Hong Kong cinema must be familiar with one name: Chow Yun-fat (b. 1955). He rose to film stardom in the 1980s when Hong Kong cinema started to attract global attention beyond East Asia. During his early screen career, Chow established a star image as an urban citizen of modern Hong Kong through films such as A Better Tomorrow/Yingxiong bense (John Woo, 1986), City on Fire/Longhu fengyun (Ringo Lam, 1987), All About Ah-Long/A Lang de gushi (Johnnie To, 1989), God of Gamblers/Du shen (Wong Jing, 1989), and Hard Boiled/Lashou shentan (John Woo, 1992)
Previous reproductive history and post-natal family planning among HIV-infected women in Ukraine
BACKGROUND: Ukraine has the highest antenatal HIV prevalence in Europe. The national prevention of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) programme has reduced the MTCT rate, but less attention has been given to the prevention of unintended pregnancy among HIV-positive women. Our objectives were to describe the reproductive health, condom use and family planning (FP) practices of HIV-positive childbearing Ukrainian women and to identify factors associated with different methods of post-natal contraception.
METHODS: HIV-infected childbearing women, diagnosed before or during pregnancy, were enrolled prospectively in a post-natal cohort study in four regional HIV/AIDS centres in Ukraine from December 2007. Logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with post-natal FP practices.
RESULTS: Data were available for 371 women enrolled by March 2009; 82% (n = 303) were married or cohabiting, 27% (97 of 363) reported a current HIV-negative sexual partner and 69% were diagnosed with HIV during their most recent pregnancy. Overall, 21% (75 of 349) of women were not using contraception post-natally (of whom 80% reported no current sexual activity), 50% (174 of 349) used condoms, 20% (74 of 349) relied solely/partially on coitus interruptus and 4% used hormonal methods or intrauterine device. Among married/cohabiting women, consistent use of condoms in the previous pregnancy [AOR 1.96 (95%CI 1.06â3.62)], having an HIV-positive partner [AOR 0.42 (0.20â0.87)], current sexual activity [AOR 4.53 (1.19â17.3)] and study site were significantly associated with post-natal condom use; 16% of those with HIV-negative partners did not use condoms. Risk factors for non-use of FP were lack of affordability [AOR 6.34 (1.73â23.2)] and inconsistent use of condoms in the previous pregnancy [AOR 7.25 (1.41â37.2)].
CONCLUSIONS: More than 40% of HIV-positive women in this population are at risk of unintended pregnancy and the one in six women in HIV-discordant couples not using barrier methods risk transmitting HIV to their partners. Our study results are limited by the observational nature of the data and the potential for both measured and unmeasured confounding
