Brief smoking cessation in acute Welsh hospitals: A realist approach
This implementation study sought to determine what works to support brief smoking cessation (BSC) in acute hospital settings, through exploration of organizational delivery and the role of healthcare professionals (HCPs). We used a realist approach, with embedded stakeholder engagement, within a large health organization. We conducted interviews (n = 27), a survey (n = 279) and organization documentation review (n = 44). The final programme theory suggests HCPs implement BSC when they value it as part of their role in contributing to improved patient outcomes; this is due to personal and professional influences, such as knowledge or experience. Organizational support, training and working in an environment where BSC is visible as standard care, positively influences implementation. However, the context exerts a strong influence on whether BSC is implemented, or not. HCPs make nuanced judgements on whether to implement BSC based on their assessment of the patient's responses, the patient's condition and other acute care demands. HCPs are less likely to implement BSC in dynamic and uncertain environments, as they are concerned about adversely impacting on the clinician-patient relationship and prioritize other acute care requirements. Organizations should actively promote BSC as a core function of the acute hospital setting and improve professional practice through leadership, training, feedback and visible indicators of organizational commitment. HCPs can be persuaded that implementing BSC is an acute care priority and an expectation of standard practice for improving patient outcomes
Living with other women’s lives: ‘research resonance’ in the context of life history interviewing
This article reflects on the ways researchers are affected by their engagement with the stories they encounter in research. It proposes the notion of ‘research resonance’ to capture the experience of living with research participants’ stories, and by extension, their lives. The article draws on data collected for the ‘Girlhood and Later Life’ project, which investigated youth experiences and transitions to adulthood of women born between 1939 and 1952 in Britain. Reflecting on examples from a music elicitation exercise and life history narratives, the researchers on this project explore and conceptualise their experience of living with ‘sociological memories’. Their accounts address how life history researchers may be challenged or affected on a personal level through their professional practice. The article concludes by outlining the key implications of ‘research resonance’ for the craft of analysing life-course interviews
Introducing ‘resonance’: revisioning the relationship between youth and later life in women born 1939–52
This article proposes ‘resonance’ as a fruitful way of conceptualising the relationship between youth and later life and reflecting on its significance: resonance is how a person’s ‘youth’ is lived with in the present of their later life. Resonance revisions youth, engaging with the complexity of its presence in the lifecourse. Relinquishing a preoccupation with continuity and linearity, youth seen from the vantage point of later life contributes fresh insights into what matters for people and how. This conceptualisation emerged from a qualitative study of women born 1939–52 which revealed that experiences attributed to the teens and early twenties have a presence in a person’s later life in ways unrecognised in established approaches, namely longitudinal life-course studies and socio-cultural approaches. These resonances are often historically inflected such that some cohorts may live with their youth in later life in ways that distinguish them from their predecessors and successors
Dark Solitons in High Velocity Waveguide Polariton Fluids
We study exciton-polariton nonlinear optical fluids in the high momentum waveguide regime for the first
time. We demonstrate the formation of dark solitons with the expected dependence of width on fluid
density for both main classes of soliton-forming fluid defects. The results are well described by numerical
modeling of the fluid propagation. We deduce a continuous wave nonlinearity more than ten times that on
picosecond time scales, arising due to interaction with the exciton reservoir

Design and characterization of high optical quality InGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs-based polariton microcavities
The presence of dislocations arising from strain relaxation strongly affects polaritons through their photonic component and ultimately limits experiments involving polariton propagation. In this work, we investigate the range of growth parameters to achieve high optical quality GaAs/AlxGa1−xAs-based microcavities containing strained InxGa1−xAs quantum wells and using differential interference contrast (Nomarski) microscopy deduce a design rule for homogeneous versus disordered structures. We illustrate the effect of disorder by contrasting observations of polariton condensates in relaxed and unrelaxed microcavities. In our optimized device, we generate a polariton condensate and deduce a lifetime for the interacting polariton fluid of 39 ± 2 ps

Does employees’ subjective well-being affect workplace performance?
This paper uses linked employer-employee data to investigate the relationship between employees’ subjective well-being and workplace performance in Britain. The analyses show a clear, positive and statistically-significant relationship between the average level of job satisfaction at the workplace and workplace performance. The relationship is present in both cross-sectional and panel analyses and is robust to various estimation methods and model specifications. In contrast, we find no association between levels of job-related affect and workplace performance. Ours is the first study of its kind for Britain to use nationally-representative data and it provides novel findings regarding the importance of worker job satisfaction in explaining workplace performance. The findings suggest that there is a prima facie case for employers to maintain and raise levels of job satisfaction among their employees. They also indicate that initiatives to raise aggregate job satisfaction should feature in policy discussions around how to improve levels of productivity and growth

Sexuality, Intimacy and Older Care Home Residents.
YESOver half a million people aged 65+ live in care homes (ONS 2011). Yet, sex, sexuality and intimacy and old people remain overlooked in social policy and professional practice (Hafford-Letchfield 2008). We explore narratives from a feasibility study based in Northwest England that consulted on the significance of researching sexuality and intimacy. We draw on narratives generated with two focus groups of professional carers (n = 16) and interviews with three residents, (two male and one female) and four female spouses (n = 7). All three types of stakeholders expressed concern about privacy and environmental impediments to intimacy (e.g. shortage of double rooms). However, distinct concerns were expressed by each group. Residents’ expressed scepticism that the topic was ‘too personal’, that old people were post-sexual or that sex/intimacy were part of range of needs and could be eclipsed by those relating to grand-parenting, avoiding isolation and personalization of care. Spouses emphasized the importance of intimacy over sex/sexuality as an indicator of the depth and longevity of a relationship but were concerned about unmet needs and loss of influence over their partners’ care. Obliged to meet a complex of legal, professional, ethical and interpersonal obligations, care staff articulated a need for guidance to help them support residents and their significant others. We conclude with practical recommendations that address barriers to enabling intimacy
Commuting and wellbeing: A critical overview of the literature with implications for policy and future research

This review provides a critical overview of what has been learnt about commuting’s impact on subjective wellbeing (SWB). It is structured around a conceptual model which assumes commuting can affect SWB over three time horizons: (i) during the journey; (ii) immediately after the journey; and (iii) over the longer term. Our assessment of the evidence shows that mood is lower during the commute than other daily activities and stress can be induced by congestion, crowding and unpredictability. People who walk or cycle to work are generally more satisfied with their commute than those who travel by car and especially those who use public transport. Satisfaction decreases with duration of commute, regardless of mode used, and increases when travelling with company. After the journey, evidence shows that the commute experience “spills over” into how people feel and perform at work and home. However, a consistent link between commuting and life satisfaction overall has not been established. The evidence suggests that commuters are generally successful in trading off the drawbacks of longer and more arduous commute journeys against the benefits they bring in relation to overall life satisfaction, but further research is required to understand the decision making involved. The evidence review points to six areas that warrant policy action and research: (i) enhancing the commute experience; (ii) increasing commute satisfaction; (iii) reducing the impacts of long duration commutes; (iv) meeting commuter preferences; (v) recognising flexibility and constraints in commuting routines and (vi) accounting for SWB impacts of commuting in policy making and appraisal
