Congenital coronary artery anomalies in adult population detected using dual source ECG-gated CTA in a single institution
Background: Congenital anomalies of the coronary arteries (CAs) are rare and are often diagnosed incidentally during a conventional coronary angiography. Recently, the incidence of these congenital defects is on the rise particularly after the introduction of the electrocardiography (ECG) gated coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA). This innovative radiological screening modality has led to the most precise mapping of the course of the CAs on computed tomographic scan. The aim of the study is to determine the prevalence and describe the CAs congenital anomalies and their variations in Kuwaiti population at a single institution experience.
Materials and methods: We analysed the CCTA data obtained consecutively from 842 patients (2013–2014), retrospectively. The inclusion criteria for patients’ selection were: atypical chest pain, equivocal ECG, assessment of patency of coronary stents or grafts and pre-operative screening. Information was acquiesced using a dual-source CT scanner with ECG gating.
Results: Data analysis revealed that 22 (2.61%) patients were found to have CA anomalies out of the 842 patients who underwent CCTA. Out of these CA anomalies, 13 cases showed more than two ostia, 7 cases showed the ectopic origin of a CA from opposite sinus or non-aortic sinus, 2 cases showed single coronary ostium and 1 case showed coronary artery with pulmonary fistula. Also, myocardial bridging was identified in 78 (9.26%) patients whereas ramus intermedius branch was identified in 160 (19%) patients.
Conclusions: The prevalence of CA anomalies in Kuwait was 2.6%, which is relatively higher than previously reported studies from different countries
Status of Coral Reefs in The Waters of Tidung Island Kepulauan Seribu DKI Jakarta Province Based on Underwater Photo Transect Analysis
Tidung Island is one of the islands as well as a village located in the district of South Kepulauan Seribu. The purpose of this research is to measure the environmental parameters of the waters, provide information on the condition of coral reefs, and know the form of coral growth that dominates Tidung Island. Data retrieval is done using UPT (Underwater Photo Transect) method at a depth of 5 meters at three different stations. For the processing of data that has been taken, the photo results in the form of coral cover are entered into Coral point count with excel extensions (CPCe) 4.1 application and analyzed. The results of the analysis will be stored on the storage device, then the results will be ready to be opened in Excel format. The results of this research show that the environmental parameters of the waters include, including temperature, degree of acidity, and salinity, have a range of values that are still suitable for the growth and development of corals, however, the brightness level in these waters is relatively low. The condition of coral reefs in stations 1 and 3 are in the category of damage, with hard coral cover values of 24.67% and 11.00%, while at station 2 coral reef conditions are in the good category with a hard coral cover value of 56.27%. Based on the assessment, obtained an average value of the percentage of hard corals by 30.65%, this indicates that the condition of coral reefs in Tidung Island is in the moderate category. The low percentage of hard corals is caused by the high component of dead corals with algae and rubble. Based on the results of this research, a known form of coral growth that dominates the waters of Tidung Island is foliose coral. Keywords: Domination; CPCe; Tidung Island; Coral Reef; UPT.AbstrakPulau Tidung merupakan salah satu pulau sekaligus kelurahan yang terletak di wilayah Kecamatan Kepulauan Seribu Selatan. Kata kunci: Dominasi; CPCe; Pulau Tidung; Terumbu Karang; UP

Effects of varying ruminally undegradable protein supplementation on forage digestion, nitrogen metabolism, and urea kinetics in Nellore cattle fed low-quality tropical forage
Citation: Batista, E. D., Detmann, E., Titgemeyer, E. C., Valadares, S. C., Valadares, R. F. D., Prates, L. L., . . . Paulino, M. F. (2016). Effects of varying ruminally undegradable protein supplementation on forage digestion, nitrogen metabolism, and urea kinetics in Nellore cattle fed low-quality tropical forage. Journal of Animal Science, 94(1), 201-216. doi:10.2527/jas2015-9493Effects of supplemental RDP and RUP on nutrient digestion, N metabolism, urea kinetics, and muscle protein degradation were evaluated in Nellore heifers (Bos indicus) consuming low-quality signal grass hay (5% CP and 80% NDF, DM basis). Five ruminally and abomasally cannulated Nellore heifers (248 +/- 9 kg) were used in a 5 x 5 Latin square. Treatments were the control (no supplement) and RDP supplementation to meet 100% of the RDP requirement plus RUP provision to supply 0, 50, 100, or 150% of the RUP requirement. Supplemental RDP (casein plus NPN) was ruminally dosed twice daily, and RUP supply (casein) was continuously infused abomasally. Jugular infusion of [(NN)-N-15-N-15]-urea with measurement of enrichment in urine was used to evaluate urea kinetics. The ratio of urinary 3-methylhistidine to creatinine was used to estimate skeletal muscle protein degradation. Forage NDF intake (2.48 kg/d) was not affected (P >= 0.37) by supplementation, but supplementation did increase ruminal NDF digestion (P < 0.01). Total N intake (by design) and N retention increased (P < 0.001) with supplementation and also linearly increased with RUP provision. Urea entry rate and gastrointestinal entry rate of urea were increased by supplementation (P < 0.001). Supplementation with RUP linearly increased (P = 0.02) urea entry rate and tended (P = 0.07) to linearly increase gastrointestinal entry rate of urea. Urea use for anabolic purposes tended (P = 0.07) to be increased by supplementation, and RUP provision also tended (P = 0.08) to linearly increase the amount of urea used for anabolism. The fraction of recycled urea N incorporated into microbial N was greater (P < 0.001) for control (22%) than for supplemented (9%) heifers. Urinary 3-methylhistidine: creatinine of control heifers was more than double that of supplemented heifers (P < 0.001). Control heifers reabsorbed a greater (P < 0.001) fraction of urea from the renal tubule than did supplemented heifers. Overall, unsupplemented heifers had greater mobilization of AA from myofibrillar protein, which provided N for urea synthesis and subsequent recycling. Supplemental RUP, when RDP was supplied, not only increased N retention but also supported increased urea N recycling and increased ruminal microbial protein synthesis
Evaluation of the chromium-EDTA complex and creatinine as markers for urinary volume in cattle
Creatinine and intravenously infused Cr-EDTA complex were compared as markers for urinary volume estimation in cattle fed diets containing different concentrate levels. Ten Nellore heifers were used in a two-period crossover design and fed with two diets of divergent maize silage to concentrate ratios (90:10 and 50:50). The urinary marker concentrations were strongly and positively associated with each other, and both correlated strongly and negatively with total urine volume. Creatinine excretion and chromium recovery did not vary according to diets, but chromium recovery exhibited a lower variance among animals. The evaluation of urine spot samples showed that sampling time affects both markers, with the lowest urinary concentrations obtained when samples were taken early in the morning. Both creatinine and the Cr-EDTA complex produce similar estimates of urine volume. However, despite the greater precision of the estimates obtained with chromium, the values obtained with creatinine exhibited less bias and are, therefore, more accurate
Effects of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound on injured skeletal muscle
BACKGROUND:Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has been shown to stimulate tissue metabolism and accelerate muscle healing. However, the optimal parameters in the use of LIPUS are still not clear.OBJECTIVE:The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of LIPUS on muscle healing in rats subjected to a cryolesion.METHOD:Twenty rats were divided into the following groups: an injured control group (CG) and an injured treated group (TG). Both groups were divided into 2 sub-groups (n=5 each) that were sacrificed 7 and 13 days post-surgery. Treatments were started 24 hours after the surgical procedure and consisted of 3 or 6 sessions. After euthanasia, the muscles were submitted to standard histological procedures.RESULTS:Qualitative analyses were based on morphological assessments of the muscle. The histopathological analysis on day 7 revealed that the muscles in the CG and the TG presented an intense inflammatory infiltrate, a large necrotic area and a disorganized tissue structure. After 13 days, both the CG and the TG had granulation tissue and newly formed fibers. The TG presented a more organized tissue structure. The quantitative analysis of collagen indicated similar findings among the groups, although the qualitative analysis revealed a better organization of collagen fibers in the TG at 13 days. The immunohistochemical analysis indicated that, at both time points, the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 was upregulated in the TG compared to the CG.CONCLUSIONS: LIPUS used as a treatment for muscle injury induced a more organized tissue structure at the site of the injury and stimulated the expression of COX-2 and the formation of new muscle fibers.Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP) Department of BiosciencesUniversidade Federal de São Carlos Physical Therapy DepartmentUNIFESP, Department of BiosciencesSciEL
interdependência, e reconhecendo a relação íntima do conhecimento profissional e
Abstract
Our aim in this paper is to organize a conceptual contribution to the
development of professional education processes. These are conceptualized as
dialogical processes, supported by supervision, reflectivity and research within and on
practice.
First we try to clarify our view of professional learning and education.
Recognizing an intimate relation between professional knowledge construction
processes and praxis, we also stress the interdependence of individual and collective /
organizational dimensions of those processes.
Then we conduct a brief examination of the epistemological and theoretical
frameworks of some concepts that we assume to be central and descriptive of the
composite and systemic nature of professional learning and education: Dialogism,
Intersubjectivity, Dialogical Self and Identity, Voice, Situated learning, Community of
practice and Participation.
Finally we draw some implications of the presented conceptual framework to
the identification of relational and interactive modalities that may be helpful in
developing balanced and efficient supervision processes
Predictive use of the Maximum Entropy Production principle for Past and Present Climates
In this paper, we show how the MEP hypothesis may be used to build simple
climate models without representing explicitly the energy transport by the
atmosphere. The purpose is twofold. First, we assess the performance of the MEP
hypothesis by comparing a simple model with minimal input data to a complex,
state-of-the-art General Circulation Model. Next, we show how to improve the
realism of MEP climate models by including climate feedbacks, focusing on the
case of the water-vapour feedback. We also discuss the dependence of the
entropy production rate and predicted surface temperature on the resolution of
the model
