Wind turbine generator interaction with conventional diesel generators on Block Island, Rhode Island. Volume 2: Data analysis
Assessing the performance of a MOD-OA horizontal axis wind turbine connected to an isolated diesel utility, a comprehensive data measurement program was conducted on the Block Island Power Company installation on Block Island, Rhode Island. The detailed results of that program focusing on three principal areas of (1) fuel displacement (savings), (2) dynamic interaction between the diesel utility and the wind turbine, (3) effects of three models of wind turbine reactive power control are presented. The approximate two month duration of the data acquisition program conducted in the winter months (February into April 1982) revealed performance during periods of highest wind energy penetration and hence severity of operation. Even under such conditions fuel savings were significant resulting in a fuel reduction of 6.7% while the MOD-OA was generating 10.7% of the total electrical energy. Primary results are summarized for a three-part study involving the effects of connecting a MOD-OA wind turbine generator to an isolated diesel power system. The MOD-OA installation considered was the third of four experimental nominal 200 kW wind turbines connected to various utilities under the Federal Wind Energy Program and was characterized by the highest wind energy penetration levels of four sites. The study analyses address: fuel displacement, dynamic interaction, and three modes of reactive power control. These analyses all have as their basis the results of the data acquisition program conducted on Block Island, Rhode Island
On the particle paths and the stagnation points in small-amplitude deep-water waves
In order to obtain quite precise information about the shape of the particle
paths below small-amplitude gravity waves travelling on irrotational deep
water, analytic solutions of the nonlinear differential equation system
describing the particle motion are provided. All these solutions are not closed
curves. Some particle trajectories are peakon-like, others can be expressed
with the aid of the Jacobi elliptic functions or with the aid of the
hyperelliptic functions. Remarks on the stagnation points of the

A stochastic model of Min oscillations in Escherichia coli and Min protein segregation during cell division
The Min system in Escherichia coli directs division to the centre of the cell
through pole-to-pole oscillations of the MinCDE proteins. We present a one
dimensional stochastic model of these oscillations which incorporates membrane
polymerisation of MinD into linear chains. This model reproduces much of the
observed phenomenology of the Min system, including pole-to-pole oscillations
of the Min proteins. We then apply this model to investigate the Min system
during cell division. Oscillations continue initially unaffected by the closing
septum, before cutting off rapidly. The fractions of Min proteins in the
daughter cells vary widely, from 50%-50% up to 85%-15% of the total from the
parent cell, suggesting that there may be another mechanism for regulating

Assessment of the impact of omitting palpation of the lungs and the liver at meat inspection
Meat inspection of finisher pigs is gradually moving from traditional inspection involving palpation and incisions to a more visual inspection. However, what do we miss if we no longer palpate and incise? This is addressed in this paper which focuses specifically on palpation of the lungs and the liver. A risk assessment following international guidelines was undertaken. The assessment shows that omission of these routine palpations on finisher pigs from controlled housing (i.e. herds with high biosecurity) will have no significant impact on food safety. Topsoil Selling - extreme anthropogenic erosion and its consequences for paddy soil quality (Mekong Delta, Vietnam)
Increasing urbanization and industrialization leads to rising demands for construction material, particularly in low-income countries. Thus, agricultural topsoil is sometimes removed and used as raw material e.g. for brick production. Topsoil selling (TSS) is practiced around the world from America, Europe, and Afrika to Asia. In the Mekong, Delta farmers sell the topsoil from their paddy fields to contractors.
The temporal effects of topsoil removal on soil quality are not yet fully understood. We hypothesized that after soil removal, soil quality is significantly lower compared to the original topsoil. To test this hypothesis, we sampled paddy soil chronosequences in two different provinces, ranging between 1 and 8 years after TSS.
Soil organic carbon (Corg) stocks at TSS sites were up to 20 t/ha lower than at control sites (control: 50 t/ha) in Sóc Trăng and up to 15 t/ha lower in Trà Vinh (control: 30 t/ha). The C/N ratio was nearly constant around 10. Analysis of inorganic nutrients (e.g. P, K, Na, S, Zn, Cu) showed that changes are variable in space, time and among nutrients. Annual average changes ranged from less than a kg per hectare and year for micronutrients (e.g. Cu, Zn) to several tens and hundreds of kg for macronutrients (e.g. P, S).
The so far available data revealed that TSS induces mainly a dramatic loss of soil organic matter. It was ongoing up to the 8th year of the chronosequences but was not necessarily accompanied by losses in inorganic nutrients. As a result, there appears to be a chance for farmers in the Mekong Delta to overcome risks of soil quality decline after topsoil removal.
Within the next months, we will receive the results from P- and S fractionation and also results from lignin analysis (lignin-derived phenols) will complement to the available data. Thus, we will gain further insights into soil evolution after topsoil selling shortly
Open data base analysis of scaling and spatio-temporal properties of power grid frequencies
The electrical energy system has attracted much attention from an increasingly diverse research community. Many theoretical predictions have been made, from scaling laws of fluctuations to propagation velocities of disturbances. However, to validate any theory, empirical data from large-scale power systems are necessary but are rarely shared openly. Here, we analyse an open database of measurements of electric power grid frequencies across 17 locations in 12 synchronous areas on three continents. The power grid frequency is of particular interest, as it indicates the balance of supply and demand and carries information on deterministic, stochastic, and control influences. We perform a broad analysis of the recorded data, compare different synchronous areas and validate a previously conjectured scaling law. Furthermore, we show how fluctuations change from local independent oscillations to a homogeneous bulk behaviour. Overall, the presented open database and analyses constitute a step towards more shared, collaborative energy research
Analysis of Localization Phenomena in Weakly Interacting Disordered Lattice Gases
Disorder plays a crucial role in many systems particularly in solid state
physics. However, the disorder in a particular system can usually not be chosen
or controlled. We show that the unique control available for ultracold atomic
gases may be used for the production and observation of disordered quantum
degenerate gases. A detailed analysis of localization effects for two possible
realizations of a disordered potential is presented. In a theoretical analysis
clear localization effects are observed when a superlattice is used to provide
a quasiperiodic disorder. The effects of localization are analyzed by
investigating the superfluid fraction and the localization length within the
system. The theoretical analysis in this paper paves a clear path for the
future observation of Anderson-like localization in disordered quantum gases.Comment: 9 pages, 13 figure
Ultra-cold atoms in an optical cavity: two-mode laser locking to the cavity avoiding radiation pressure
The combination of ultra-cold atomic clouds with the light fields of optical
cavities provides a powerful model system for the development of new types of
laser cooling and for studying cooperative phenomena. These experiments
critically depend on the precise tuning of an incident pump laser with respect
to a cavity resonance. Here, we present a simple and reliable experimental
tuning scheme based on a two-mode laser spectrometer. The scheme uses a first
laser for probing higher-order transversal modes of the cavity having an
intensity minimum near the cavity's optical axis, where the atoms are confined
by a magnetic trap. In this way the cavity resonance is observed without
exposing the atoms to unwanted radiation pressure. A second laser, which is
phase-locked to the first one and tuned close to a fundamental cavity mode
