    Copyright Contracts and Earnings of Visual Creators: A Survey of 5,800 British Designers, Fine Artists, Illustrators and Photographers

    There is a common perception that digitisation has prompted changes in creative labour markets. In particular, it is widely assumed that exploiters insist on "grabbing rights" (i.e. broadly conceived assignments of rights), that visual artists are not able to negotiate, that they are paid less and less, and that they are compelled to waive their moral rights. This study suggests a much more equivocal picture. In place of a straightforward narrative of decline, the results of the survey suggest that in most fields there has been less change over the last decade than one might have expected: that, terms of exploitation are most often about the same. That is not to say that there are no discernible changes in particular occupations and media. Respondents and interviewees identify some important shifts. Perhaps surprisingly, it seems there are changes in practice that are, from the creator's perspective, both positive and negative. The most positive change is identified amongst the fine artists where half (50%) see their personal bargaining position as having improved, with only 6% perceiving a weakening. The most disturbing changes are in relation to photographers. About half of all photographers (49%) say their bargaining position has worsened, with only 22% reporting improvements. A significant percentage of photographers (40%) report an increase in assignments (compared with 6% who think they have decreased). Moreover, 24% report an increase in moral rights waivers (compared to 3% who identify a decrease), and a decline in the practice of attribution. 31% of photographers see attribution as decreasing over the last decade, and only 8% increasing. 28% say income from secondary use has decreased, while only 16% say it has decreased

    A series of ten dinuclear aluminum alkyl complexes based on rigid, semirigid, and flexible bis(β‐diketiminate) ligands (NacNac) has been obtained from the reaction of trimethylaluminum and the corresponding bis(β‐diketimine)s. All compounds were fully characterized using NMR and IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis.     Noise Impacts from Professional Dog Grooming Forced-Air Dryers

    This study was designed to measure the sound output of four commonly used brands of forced-air dryers used by dog groomers in the United States. Many dog groomers have questions about the effect of this exposure on their hearing, as well as on the hearing of the dogs that are being groomed. Readings taken from each dryer at 1 meter (the likely distance of the dryer from the groomer and the dog) showed average levels ranging from 105.5 to 108.3 dB SPL or 94.8 to 108.0 dBA. Using the 90 dBA criterion required by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration, dog groomers/bathers are at risk if exposure to the lowest intensity dryer (94.8 dBA) exceeds 4 hours per day. If the more stringent 85 dBA criterion and 3 dB tradeoff is applied, less than one hour of exposure is permissible in an 8 hour day. Cautions are recommended for any persons exposed to noise from forced-air dryers

    Edge and corner identification for tracking the line of sight

    This article presents an edge-corner detector, implemented in the realm of the GEIST project (an Computer Aided Touristic Information System) to extract the information of straight edges and their intersections (image corners) from camera-captured (real world) and computer-generated images (from the database of Historical Monuments, using observer position and orientation data) -- Camera and computer-generated images are processed for reduction of detail, skeletonization and corner-edge detection -- The corners surviving the detection and skeletonization process from both images are treated as landmarks and fed to a matching algorithm, which estimates the sampling errors which usually contaminate GPS and pose tracking data (fed to the computer-image generatator) -- In this manner, a closed loop control is implemented, by which the system converges to exact determination of position and orientation of an observer traversing a historical scenario (in this case the city of Heidelberg) -- With this exact position and orientation, in the GEIST project other modules are able to project history tales on the view field of the observer, which have the exact intended scenario (the real image seen by the observer) -- In this way, the tourist “sees” tales developing in actual, material historical sites of the city -- To achieve these goals this article presents the modification and articulation of algorithms such as the Canny Edge Detector, SUSAN Corner Detector, 1-D and 2-D filters, etceter

    High precision 89^{89}Y(Îą\alpha,Îą\alpha)89^{89}Y scattering at low energies

    Elastic scattering cross sections of the 89^{89}Y(α\alpha,α\alpha)89^{89}Y reaction have been measured at energies Ec.m._{c.m.} = 15.51 and 18.63 MeV. The high precision data for the semi-magic N=50N = 50 nucleus 89^{89}Y are used to derive a local potential and to evaluate the predictions of global and regional α\alpha-nucleus potentials. The variation of the elastic alpha scattering cross sections along the N=50N = 50 isotonic chain is investigated by a study of the ratios of angular distributions for 89^{89}Y(α\alpha,α\alpha)89^{89}Y and 92^{92}Mo(α\alpha,α\alpha)92^{92}Mo at Ec.m.≈_{c.m.} \approx 15.51 and 18.63 MeV. This ratio is a very sensitive probe at energies close to the Coulomb barrier, where scattering data alone is usually not enough to characterize the different potentials. Furthermore, α\alpha-cluster states in 93^{93}Nb = 89^{89}Y ⊗\otimes α\alpha are investigated

It is proved that ¶H\P H is self-adjoint and that its eigenvalues coincide (up to a sign) with the singular values of HH, i.e. the eigenvalues of H∗H\sqrt{H^\ast H}. Moreover we explicitly construct the canonical expansion of HH and determine the singular values μj\mu_j of HH through the Borel summability of their divergent perturbation theory. The singular values yield estimates of the location of the eigenvalues \l_j of HH by Weyl's inequalities.Comment: 20 page

    MinE conformational switching confers robustness on self-organized Min protein patterns

    Protein patterning is vital for many fundamental cellular processes. This raises two intriguing questions: Can such intrinsically complex processes be reduced to certain core principles and, if so, what roles do the molecular details play in individual systems? A prototypical example for protein patterning is the bacterial Min system, in which self-organized pole-to-pole oscillations of MinCDE proteins guide the cell division machinery to midcell. These oscillations are based on cycling of the ATPase MinD and its activating protein MinE between the membrane and the cytoplasm. Recent biochemical evidence suggests that MinE undergoes a reversible, MinD-dependent conformational switch from a latent to a reactive state. However, the functional relevance of this switch for the Min network and pattern formation remains unclear. By combining mathematical modeling and in vitro reconstitution of mutant proteins, we dissect the two aspects of MinE's switch, persistent membrane binding and a change in MinE's affinity for MinD. Our study shows that the MinD-dependent change in MinE's binding affinity for MinD is essential for patterns to emerge over a broad and physiological range of protein concentrations. Mechanistically, our results suggest that conformational switching of an ATPase-activating protein can lead to the spatial separation of its distinct functional states and thereby confer robustness on an intracellular protein network with vital roles in bacterial cell division
