Moving Vertices to Make Drawings Plane

    Get PDF
A straight-line drawing δ\delta of a planar graph GG need not be plane, but can be made so by moving some of the vertices. Let shift(G,δ)(G,\delta) denote the minimum number of vertices that need to be moved to turn δ\delta into a plane drawing of GG. We show that shift(G,δ)(G,\delta) is NP-hard to compute and to approximate, and we give explicit bounds on shift(G,δ)(G,\delta) when GG is a tree or a general planar graph. Our hardness results extend to 1BendPointSetEmbeddability, a well-known graph-drawing problem.Comment: This paper has been merged with http://arxiv.org/abs/0709.017

On Dark Energy and Accelerated Reference Frames

The paper is devoted to an explanation of the accelerated rate of expansion of the Universe. Usually the acceleration of the Universe, which is described by FRW metric, is due to dark energy. It is shown that this effect may be considered as a manifestation of torsion tensor for a flat Universe in the realm of Teleparallel gravity. An observer with radial field velocity obey Hubble's Law. As a consequence it is established that this is radial acceleration in a flat Universe. In Eq. (\ref{24}) the acceleration is written in terms of the deceleration parameter, the Hubble's constant and the proper distance. This may be interpreted as an acceleration of the Universe.Comment: 09 pages, no figures. Accepted for publication in Annalen der Physi

A generalized Heckmann-Schucking cosmological solution in the presence of a negative cosmological constant

An exact solution of the Einstein equations for a Bianchi-I universe in the presence of dust, stiff matter and a negative cosmological constant, generalising the well-known Heckmann-Schucking solution is presented. This solution describes a universe existing during a finite period of cosmic time, where the beginning and the end of its evolution are characterized by the presence of Kasner type cosmological singularities.Comment: 10 page

Abstract

Background

The objective of this analysis was to measure changes in items on the Pediatric Adverse Event Rating Scale (PAERS) that relate to emotional well-being of children and adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) during treatment with atomoxetine for up to 24 weeks from the perspective of the patient, the parent, and the physician.

Methods

Patients aged 6–17 years with ADHD were treated with atomoxetine (target dose 1.2 mg/kg/day). In the two studies on which this secondary analysis is based the PAERS was used to assess the tolerability of atomoxetine in children and adolescents. This scale has a total of 48 items. The ten items that reflect emotional well-being were selected to measure changes over time from a patient, parent, and physician perspective.

Results

421 patients were treated with atomoxetine. 355 patients completed the 8-week treatment period, and 260 patients completed the 24-week treatment period. The ten items that reflect emotional well-being were grouped in five dimensions: depressed mood, self-harm, irritability/agitation, drowsiness, and euphoria. The scores of these dimensions decreased over time, both from a patient as well as from a parent and physician perspective. Only the dimension self-harm was extremely low at baseline and stayed low over time. The mean scores for the ten items depended on the rater perspective.

Conclusion

The emotional well-being of children and adolescents with ADHD improved in terms of depressed mood, irritability/agitation, drowsiness, and euphoria during treatment with atomoxetine for up to 24 weeks.</p

Background: Geoeconomic variations in epidemiology, the practice of ventilation, and outcome in invasively ventilated intensive care unit (ICU) patients without acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remain unexplored. In this analysis we aim to address these gaps using individual patient data of four large observational studies. Methods: In this pooled analysis we harmonised individual patient data from the ERICC, LUNG SAFE, PRoVENT, and PRoVENT-iMiC prospective observational studies, which were conducted from June, 2011, to December, 2018, in 534 ICUs in 54 countries. We used the 2016 World Bank classification to define two geoeconomic regions: middle-income countries (MICs) and high-income countries (HICs). ARDS was defined according to the Berlin criteria. Descriptive statistics were used to compare patients in MICs versus HICs. The primary outcome was the use of low tidal volume ventilation (LTVV) for the first 3 days of mechanical ventilation. Secondary outcomes were key ventilation parameters (tidal volume size, positive end-expiratory pressure, fraction of inspired oxygen, peak pressure, plateau pressure, driving pressure, and respiratory rate), patient characteristics, the risk for and actual development of acute respiratory distress syndrome after the first day of ventilation, duration of ventilation, ICU length of stay, and ICU mortality. Findings: Of the 7608 patients included in the original studies, this analysis included 3852 patients without ARDS, of whom 2345 were from MICs and 1507 were from HICs. Patients in MICs were younger, shorter and with a slightly lower body-mass index, more often had diabetes and active cancer, but less often chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart failure than patients from HICs. Sequential organ failure assessment scores were similar in MICs and HICs. Use of LTVV in MICs and HICs was comparable (42\ub74% vs 44\ub72%; absolute difference –1띩 [–9띘 to 6뜑] p=0띧; data available in 3174 [82%] of 3852 patients). The median applied positive end expiratory pressure was lower in MICs than in HICs (5 [IQR 5–8] vs 6 [5–8] cm H2O; p=0뜀11). ICU mortality was higher in MICs than in HICs (30\ub75% vs 19\ub79%; p=0뜀04; adjusted effect 16띁% [95% CI 9띒–23띒]; p<0뜀01) and was inversely associated with gross domestic product (adjusted odds ratio for a US$10 000 increase per capita 0란 [95% CI 0띵–0랆]; p<0뜀01). Interpretation: Despite similar disease severity and ventilation management, ICU mortality in patients without ARDS is higher in MICs than in HICs, with a strong association with country-level economic status. In the present study the first chapter deals with the biography of Chvyl'ovyj's open and controversially discussed questions. Against this background, a biographical sketch of its own arises through the critical comparison of previously published biographical material. The following chapter on Chvyl'ovyj's journalism will be preceded by an outline of literary politics in Ukraine in the 1920s. This section, which is supplemented with corresponding passages in the biography, presents in a cross-section the representatives and programs of the Ukrainian literary associations and the course of the literary discussion, with emphasis on Chvyl'ovyj's activities. This background is crucial for the understanding of Chvyl'ovyj's journalism, which is also examined in the third chapter from the perspective of Spengler reception.
