    Distribution and conservation of Acipenser sturio L., 1758 and related species in Greek waters

    Four sturgeon species have been reported to exist in Greek waters: the Atlantic sturgeon, the great sturgeon, the stellate sturgeon and the Adriatic sturgeon. The Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser sturio L., 1758 has an almost regular presence in the Evros River (Aegean Sea), and is rather rare in the Pinios and Acheloos Rivers. The great sturgeon or beluga Huso huso L., 1758 is suspected to be an occasional visitor in Greek waters, or it is a case of undocumented information. The presence of the stellate sturgeon Acipenser stellatus Pallas, 1771 has been recently verified by a specimen caught close to the Thracian shore. The Adriatic sturgeon Acipenser naccarii Bonaparte, 1836 is supposed to have its southern distribution limits in the waters around the island of Corfu, although this information has never been confirmed. The distribution of these species is obviously related to salinity, probably prohibiting the extension of other sturgeon species to the Mediterranean, except for A. sturio. The discontinuous distribution of H. huso and A. stellatus may be a result of sea-level changes, while salinity played some role in the last period of glaciation. In the marine area of the Evros River A. sturio has been economically significant until 1975, supporting a small black caviar industry. Since then, the species has become rare mainly because of overfishing, and the reduction and pollution of the Evros River, in the upstream of which some important sturgeon spawning sites have been located.Cuatro especies de esturiones han sido citadas en las aguas griegas: el esturión atlántico Acipenser sturio L., 1758, el beluga Huso huso (L., 1758), el esturión estrellado Acipenser stellatus Pallas, 1771 y el esturión del Adriático Acipenser naccarii Bonaparte, 1836. La presencia de esturión estrellado A. stellatus ha sido recientemente verificada con un ejemplar capturado cerca de la costa tracia. El esturión del Adriático A. naccarii se supone que tiene sus límites meridionales de distribución en las aguas alrededor de la isla de Corfú, aunque esta información nunca ha sido confirmada.     Association of Air Pollution with Increased Incidence of Ventricular Tachyarrhythmias Recorded by Implanted Cardioverter Defibrillators

    Epidemiologic studies have demonstrated a consistent link between sudden cardiac deaths and particulate air pollution. We used implanted cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) records of ventricular tachyarrhythmias to assess the role of air pollution as a trigger of these potentially life-threatening events. The study cohort consisted of 203 cardiac patients with ICD devices in the Boston metropolitan area who were followed for an average of 3.1 years between 1995 and 2002. Fine particle mass and gaseous air pollution plus temperature and relative humidity were measured on almost all days, and black carbon, sulfate, and particle number on a subset of days. Date, time, and intracardiac electrograms of ICD-detected arrhythmias were downloaded at the patients’ regular follow-up visits (about every 3 months). Ventricular tachyarrhythmias were identified by electrophysiologist review. Risk of ventricular arrhythmias associated with air pollution was estimated with logistic regression, adjusting for season, temperature, relative humidity, day of the week, patient, and a recent prior arrhythmia. We found increased risks of ventricular arrhythmias associated with 2-day mean exposure for all air pollutants considered, although these associations were not statistically significant. We found statistically significant associations between air pollution and ventricular arrhythmias for episodes within 3 days of a previous arrhythmia. The associations of ventricular tachyarrhythmias with fine particle mass, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and black carbon suggest a link with motor vehicle pollutants. The associations with sulfate suggest a link with stationary fossil fuel combustion sources

    Chemical Characterization and Source Apportionment of Household Fine Particulate Matter in Rural, Peri-urban, and Urban West Africa

    Household air pollution in sub-Saharan Africa and other developing regions is an important cause of disease burden. Little is known about the chemical composition and sources of household air pollution in sub-Saharan Africa, and how they differ between rural and urban homes. We analyzed the chemical composition and sources of fine particles (PM2.5) in household cooking areas of multiple neighborhoods in Accra, Ghana, and in peri-urban (Banjul) and rural (Basse) areas in The Gambia. In Accra, biomass burning accounted for 39–62% of total PM2.5 mass in the cooking area in different neighborhoods; the absolute contributions were 10–45 μg/m3. Road dust and vehicle emissions comprised 12–33% of PM2.5 mass. Solid waste burning was also a significant contributor to household PM2.5 in a low-income neighborhood but not for those living in better-off areas. In Banjul and Basse, biomass burning was the single dominant source of cooking-area PM2.5, accounting for 74–87% of its total mass; the relative and absolute contributions of biomass smoke to PM2.5 mass were larger in households that used firewood than in those using charcoal, reaching as high as 463 μg/m3 in Basse homes that used firewood for cooking. Our findings demonstrate the need for policies that enhance access to cleaner fuels in both rural and urban areas, and for controlling traffic emissions in cities in sub-Saharan Africa

    THESSALONIKI SEISMIC HAZARD ASSESSMENT: PROBABILISTIC AND DETERMINISTIC APPROACH FOR ROCK SITE CONDITIONS

    Within the framework of four research projects (RISK-EU, EUROSEISRISK, SRM_LIFE and LESSLOSS) extensive calculations were carried out assessing the seismic hazard in the Thessaloniki and surrounding area. The main results were derived from probabilistic and deterministic approaches taking into account rock site conditions for each examined site in the Metropolitan area of Thessaloniki. The expected strong-ground motions were calculated applying different methodologies. Two different groups worked for the assessment of the seismic hazard, the first one constituted of the INGV (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Italy) and LSMF (Laboratory of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Thessaloniki, Greece) and the second one of LSMF and ITSAK (Institute of Engineering Seismology and Earthquake Engineering, Thessaloniki, Greece)

    The effect of outdoor fungal spore concentrations on daily asthma severity.

    The relationship between day-to-day changes in asthma severity and combined exposures to community air pollutants and aeroallergens remains to be clearly defined. We examined the effects of outdoor air pollutants, fungi, and pollen on asthma. Twenty-two asthmatics ages 9-46 years were followed for 8 weeks (9 May-3 July 1994) in a semirural Southern California community around the air inversion base elevation (1,200 ft). Daily diary responses included asthma symptom severity (6 levels), morning and evening peak expiratory flow rates (PEFR), and as-needed beta-agonist inhaler use. Exposures included 24-hr outdoor concentrations of fungi, pollen, and particulate matter with a diameter < 10 microns (PM10; maximum = 51 micrograms/m3) and 12-hour day-time personal ozone (O3) measurements (90th percentile = 38 ppb). Random effects longitudinal regression models controlled for autocorrelation and weather. Higher temperatures were strongly protective, probably due to air conditioning use and diminished indoor allergens during hot, dry periods. Controlling for weather, total fungal spore concentrations were associated with all outcomes: per minimum to 90th percentile increase of nearly 4,000 spores/m3, asthma symptom scores increased 0.36 (95% CI, 0.16-0.56), inhaler use increased 0.33 puffs (95% CI, -0.02-0.69), and evening PEFR decreased 12.1 l/min (95% CI, -1.8-22.3). These associations were greatly enhanced by examining certain fungal types (e.g., Alternaria, basidiospores, and hyphal fragments) and stratifying on 16 asthmatics allergic to tested deuteromycete fungi. There were no significant associations to low levels of pollen or O3, but inhaler use was associated with PM10 (0.15 inhaler puffs/10 micrograms/m3; p < 0.02). These findings suggest that exposure to fungal spores can adversely effect the daily respiratory status of some asthmatics

    Visitors' awareness of ICZM and WTP for beach preservation in four European Mediterranean regions.

    This paper discusses the results of a multi-country survey about private stakeholders' contribution to coastal preservation. It was conducted in four coastal sites of Greece, Italy and France, in order to collect information about beach visitors' perception of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) and their willingness to pay (WTP) for beach preservation, intended here as defence from erosion. In order to find out whether ICZM perception is a determinant of WTP, regression analysis is applied. Results show that in these sites respondents have a low level of information about the nature of ICZM, despite local authorities having implemented some ICZM strategies for preserving the coast. Nevertheless, those who are informed about ICZM have a higher probability of paying for beach preservation. This suggests to policymakers that promoting public awareness about ICZM may increase the probability of paying. Finally, some categories of visitors, such as women and young and middle-aged people, have a higher probability of paying than men and older people, thus suggesting a more sensitive attitude to beach preservation. Therefore, policy-makers should also pay attention to the categories of visitors less likely to pay

    While the effects of weather variability on cardio-respiratory mortality are well described, research examining the effects on morbidity, especially for vulnerable populations, is warranted. We investigated the associations between lung function and outdoor temperature (T in Celsius degrees (°C)) and relative humidity (RH), in a cohort of elderly men, the Normative Aging Study. Our study included 1103 participants whose forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), and weather exposures were assessed one to five times during the period 1995-2011 (i.e. 3162 observations). Temperature and relative humidity were measured at one location 4 h to 7 days before lung function tests. We used linear mixed-effects models to examine the associations with outdoor T and RH. A 5-degree increase in the 3-day moving average T was associated with a significant 0.7% decrease (95%CI: -1.24, -0.20) in FVC and a 5% increase in the 7-day moving average RH was associated with a significant 0.2% decrease (95%CI: -0.40, -0.02) in FVC and FEV1. The associations with T were greater when combined with higher exposures of black carbon with a 1.6% decrease (95%CI -2.2; -0.9) in FVC and a 1% decrease (95%CI -1.7; -0.4) in FEV1. The relationships between T and RH and lung function were linear. No synergistic effect of T and RH was found. Heat and lung function are two predictors of mortality. Our findings suggest that increases in temperature and relative humidity are related to decreases in lung function, and such observations might be amplified by high black carbon levels
