    No full text
THE MAIN AIM OF THIS STUDY WAS TO INVESTIGATE THE "LEARNING ENVIRONMENT" OF TEI NURSING STUDENTS IN THE CLINICAL AREA. THE STATISTICAL INSTRUMENT USED FOR DATA COLLECTION WAS THE FRETWELLS' QUESTIONNAIRE WHICH WAS COMPLETED BY THE STUDENTS, THE STAFF NURSES AND THE CLINICAL TEACHERS OF 25 WARDS FROM FOUR GENERAL HOSPITALS LOCATED IN ATHENS. INTERVIEWS WERE USED FOR DATA COLLECTION FROM THE WARD SISTERS. RESULTS DID NOT DIFFERENTIATE THE WARDS INTO THOSE WITH GOOD" AND "BAD" LEARNING ENVIRONMENT. ALL WARDS GAVE A PICTURE OF AN ENVIRONMENT INDIFFERENT TO THE STUDENTS LEARNING. OTHER INTERESTING RESULTS ARE REPORTED IN THE TEXT OF THE DISSERTATION.ΚΥΡΙΟΣ ΣΚΟΠΟΣ ΤΗΣ ΕΡΕΥΝΑΣ ΗΤΑΝ "Η ΔΙΕΡΕΥΝΗΣΗ ΤΟΥ ΠΕΡΙΒΑΛΛΟΝΤΟΣ ΜΑΘΗΣΗΣ" ΤΩΝ ΣΠΟΥΔΑΣΤΩΝ ΝΟΣΗΛΕΥΤΙΚΗΣ ΤΕΙ ΣΤΟΝ ΚΛΙΝΙΚΟ ΤΟΜΕΑ. Care of older people in nursing homes: an intensive programme as an educational activity within Erasmus-Socrates

    No full text
The paper describes and discusses an Intensive Programme as a European educational activity within Erasmus–Socrates. As nurses and European citizens, it is important to know and understand each other’s culture and to be able to work within a united Europe. Education plays a leading role in the preparation of professionals who will have to develop these skills. Based on the aims of Erasmus–Socrates, an Intensive Programme entitled ‘Care of Older People in Nursing Homes’ was designed, sponsored, and implemented over three continuous academic years with the participation of five European countries. The topic was selected due to its importance for Europe, as it is a region with an ageing population. A wide range of themes was covered using lectures, group discussion, exercises and study visits as teaching strategies. Evaluation suggests that the aims of the programme were achieved

Attitudes of registered nurses and student nurses to disabled children.

The purpose of this study was to examine and compare the attitudes of registered nurses and student nurses towards disabled children. A convenience sample consisting of 99 registered nurses employed in paediatric hospitals and 189 student nurses was selected. The instrument used for data collection was the 'Attitudes Towards Disabled Persons' (ATDP) scale. Descriptive statistics and one-way analysis of variance were performed to test for significant differences. On the whole subjects' attitudes appeared to be poor. Student nurses had more positive attitudes in comparison to registered nurses; however, the difference was not statistically significant. There were significant differences between the different age groups and between student groups within different education settings. There were no significant differences in gender. Actions to improve subjects' attitudes towards disabled children are discussed and suggested

Reliability and validity of the Greek version of Kogan's Old People Scale

Aims and objectives. The aim of this study was to test the psychometric properties – validity and reliability – of the Greek version of Kogan's Old People scale. Background. The ageing of the population in most of the developed world and in Greece, challenge-nursing care, therefore, nursing education needs to be updated accordingly. Until today there have been no studies in Greece in relation to student nurses' attitudes towards older people. To have a reliable questionnaire for measuring a Greek population's attitudes towards older people the Kogan's Old People Scale was translated into Greek. Design. The study was designed as a cross-sectional survey. The main reason for choosing a cross-sectional survey was the time limits for the study. A sample of 390 nursing students in Athens participated in the study. Methods. A questionnaire was given to the students, which included the Kogan's Old People Scale. Results. Results showed Cronbach's alpha coefficient 0·73 for the OP− scale and 0·65 for the OP+ scale, which are comparable to published studies until today. The six-factor solution explains the 41·5% of the variance in the sample. The scale was also found to differentiate between first and final year students on how their education in nursing is influencing their attitudes towards the older people. Conclusions. Reliability and validity supported the Greek version of the Kogan's Old People Scale as a reliable instrument. Its use in evaluating Greek nursing education programmes could help in preparing nurses capable of meeting the needs of older people. Relevance to clinical practice. Nursing education – basic and lifelong – needs to be updated in order to respond to the needs of older people and a reliable instrument can help to evaluate it

Job satisfaction, stress and burnout associated with haemodialysis nursing: a review of literature

    No full text
Job dissatisfaction, stress and burnout are linked to high rates of nurses leaving the profession, poor morale and poor patient outcomes. Haemodialysis (HD) nursing is uniquely characterised by the intense-prolonged interaction with patients who require complex technological care. A review of nine papers found that factors affecting job satisfaction were aspects of nursing care, organisational factors and length of time that a nurse has been working in nephrology nursing. Factors affecting job stress and burnout were due to interpersonal relationships with physicians, patient care activities, violence and abuse from patients, organisational factors and a lack of access to ongoing education
