    Business intelligence gap analysis: a user, supplier and academic perspective

    Business intelligence (BI) takes many different forms, as indicated by the varying definitions of BI that can be found in industry and academia. These different definitions help us understand of what BI issues are important to the main players in the field of BI; users, suppliers and academics. The goal of this research is to discover gaps and trends from the standpoints of BI users, BI suppliers and academics, and to examine their effects on business and academia. Consultants also play an important role since they can be seen as the link between users and suppliers. Two research methods are combined to accomplish this goal. We examine the BI focus of users and suppliers through a survey, and we gain insight to the BI focus of academics, vendor-neutral consultants (typical representatives like Forrester, Gartner and IDC) and vendor- specific consultants (typical representatives like IBM, Information builders, Microsoft, Oracle and SAP) through their publications. Previous studies indicate that similar article analyses often focus on academic research methods only. That means that the results so far often reveal the academic perspective. Unlike these previous studies, the perspective of this research is not limited to academics. Our results provide insight of the BI trends and BI issue ranking of BI users, suppliers, academics, vendors neutral consultants and vendor specific consultant

    Spatial and temporal variation in long-term sediment accumulation in a back-barrier salt marsh

    In situ persistence of salt marshes in the face of sea-level rise relies on their ability to maintain substrate elevation through sufficient vertical accretion of sediment. However, sedimentation rates in salt marshes vary spatially and temporally, which complicates the assessment of their ability to keep up with sea-level rise. Here, we explore the spatial and temporal variation in sediment accumulation in a single back-barrier salt marsh site. Using one-time in situ measurements at the landscape scale, we obtained synoptic information of elevation and sediment thickness over the entire salt marsh in a chronosequence over centuries. Repeated measurements along short elevation transects (0.3–0.9 m +MHT) revealed decadal changes, complementing the broader marsh data with detailed information on elevation, thickness of the marsh deposits and accumulation rates. Thickness of the deposits was largely related to the elevation gradient: the sediment layer was thinner at the higher marsh (near the dunes and far away from the intertidal flats), and thicker at the lower marsh (near the intertidal flats). Moreover, the thickness of the layer increased with salt marsh age along the chronosequence, and age accounted for 72 % of variability in sediment accumulation. The rate of sediment accumulation was higher than the local rate of sea-level rise in the younger marsh, whereas it was equal to the rate of sea-level rise in the older marsh. In the older salt marsh, sediment accumulation was lower, possibly due to autocompaction in the thicker, older layers. Both at the landscape scale and along short elevation transects within individual drainage basins, sediment accumulation decreased with distance to sediment supply routes. However, their relative importance depended on the scale of observation. Distance to creeks accounted for 17 % of the variability in sediment accumulation at the landscape scale, compared to 4 % at the smaller scale. Similarly, the influence of distance to intertidal flats varied from 1 % at the landscape scale to 13 % at the smaller scale. Our main findings indicate that lower-elevation older marshes and higher-elevation younger marshes far away from sediment sources are at risk of not keeping pace with the local rate of sea-level rise and are potentially vulnerable to increased flooding.</p

    Tiger reefs: Self‐organized regular patterns in deep‐sea cold‐water coral reefs

    Complexity theory predicts that self-organized, regularly patterned ecosystems store more biomass and are more resilient than spatially uniform systems. Self-organized ecosystems are well-known from the terrestrial realm, with “tiger bushes” being the archetypical example and mussel beds and tropical coral reefs the marine examples. We here identify regular spatial patterns in cold-water coral reefs (nicknamed “tiger reefs”) from video transects and argue that these are likely the result of self-organization. We used variograms and Lomb–Scargle analysis of seven annotated video transects to analyze spatial patterns in live coral and dead coral (i.e., skeletal remains) cover at the Logachev coral mound province (NE Atlantic Ocean) and found regular spatial patterns with length scales between 62 and 523 m in live and dead coral distribution along these transects that point to self-organization of cold-water coral reefs. Self-organization theory shows that self-organized ecosystems can withstand large environmental changes by adjusting their spatial configuration. We found indications that cold-water corals can similarly adjust their spatial configuration, possibly providing resilience in the face of climate change. Dead coral framework remains in the environment for extended periods of time, providing a template for spatial patterns that facilitates live coral recovery. The notion of regular spatial patterns in cold-water coral reefs is interesting for cold-water coral restoration, as transplantation will be more successful when it follows the patterns that are naturally present. This finding also underlines that anthropogenic effects such as ocean acidification and bottom trawling that destroy the dead coral template undermine cold-water coral resilience. Differences in the pattern periodicities of live and dead coral cover further present an interesting new angle to investigate past and present environmental conditions in cold-water coral reefs

    Comparing palliative care in care homes across Europe (PACE) : protocol of a cross-sectional study of deceased residents in 6 EU countries

    Objectives: Although a growing number of older people are dying in care homes, palliative care has developed in these settings only recently. Cross-country representative comparative research hardly exists in this area. As part of a large EU-funded project, we aim to undertake representative comparative research in care homes in Europe, to describe and compare 6 countries in terms of (1) resident outcomes, quality and costs of palliative and end-of-life care; and (2) palliative care structures and staff knowledge and attitudes toward palliative care. We also aim to explore country, facility, staff, patient, and care characteristics related to better outcomes at resident level. Design and Methods: To obtain a representative nationwide sample, we will conduct a large-scale cross-sectional study of deceased residents in care homes in Belgium, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and the United Kingdom, using proportional stratified random sampling (taking into account region, facility type and bed capacity). In each country, all participating care homes retrospectively report all deaths of residents in and outside the facilities over the previous 3-month period. For each case, structured questionnaires, including validated instruments, are sent to (1) the administrator/manager, (2) staff member most involved in care, (3) treating physician (general practitioner or elderly care physician), and (4) a closely involved relative. It is estimated that, per country, 50 care homes are needed on average to obtain a minimum of 200 deceased residents. Collected data include clinical and socio-demographic characteristics, quality of dying, quality and costs of palliative care and end-of-life care, and palliative care structures at the facility level and country level. To obtain a representative view of staff knowledge and attitudes regarding palliative care, PACE will conduct a cross-sectional study of staff working in the participating care homes. Conclusion: Considering the growing challenges associated with aging in all European countries, there is an urgent need to build a robust international comparative evidence base that can inform the development of policies to target improved palliative care in care homes. By describing this research protocol, we hope to inform international research in care homes on how to perform representative end-of-life care research in these settings and better understand which systems are associated with better outcomes

    Consensus on treatment for residents in long-term care facilities : perspectives from relatives and care staff in the PACE cross-sectional study in 6 European countries

    Background: In long-term care facilities often many care providers are involved, which could make it difficult to reach consensus in care. This may harm the relation between care providers and can complicate care. This study aimed to describe and compare in six European countries the degree of consensus among everyone involved in care decisions, from the perspective of relatives and care staff. Another aim was to assess which factors are associated with reporting that full consensus was reached, from the perspective of care staff and relatives.Methods: In Belgium, England, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland a random sample of representative long-term care facilities reported all deaths of residents in the previous three months (n = 1707). This study included residents about whom care staff (n = 1284) and relatives (n = 790) indicated in questionnaires the degree of consensus among all involved in the decision or care process. To account for clustering on facility level, Generalized Estimating Equations were conducted to analyse the degree of consensus across countries and factors associated with full consensus.Results: Relatives indicated full consensus in more than half of the residents in all countries (NL 57.9% - EN 68%), except in Finland (40.7%). Care staff reported full consensus in 59.5% of residents in Finland to 86.1% of residents in England. Relatives more likely reported full consensus when: the resident was more comfortable or talked about treatment preferences, a care provider explained what palliative care is, family-physician communication was well perceived, their relation to the resident was other than child (compared to spouse/partner) or if they lived in Poland or Belgium (compared to Finland). Care staff more often indicated full consensus when they rated a higher comfort level of the resident, or if they lived in Italy, the Netherland, Poland or England (compared to Finland).Conclusions: In most countries the frequency of full consensus among all involved in care decisions was relatively high. Across countries care staff indicated full consensus more often and no consensus less often than relatives. Advance care planning, comfort and good communication between relatives and care professionals could play a role in achieving full consensus

    Long-distance interactions regulate the structure and resilience of coastal ecosystems

    Mounting evidence indicates that spatial interactions are important in structuring coastal ecosystems. Until recently, however, most of this work has been focused on seemingly exceptional systems that are characterized by regular, self-organized patterns. In this review, we document that interactions that operate at long distances, beyond the direct neighborhood of individual organisms, are more common and have much more far-reaching implications for coastal ecosystems than was previously realized. We review studies from a variety of ecosystem types-including cobble beaches, mussel beds, coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and mangrove forests-that reveal a startling interplay of positive and negative interactions between habitats across distances of up to a kilometer. In addition to classical feeding relations, alterations of physical conditions constitute an important part of these long-distance interactions. This entanglement of habitats has crucial implications for how humans manage coastal ecosystems, and evaluations of anthropogenic impact should explicitly address long-distance and system-wide effects before we deem these human activities to be causing little harm
