    Spectroscopic measurements of solar wind generation

    Spectroscopically observable quantities are described which are sensitive to the primary plasma parameters of the solar wind's source region. The method is discussed in which those observable quantities are used as constraints in the construction of empirical models of various coronal structures. Simulated observations are used to examine the fractional contributions to observed spectral intensities from coronal structures of interest which co-exist with other coronal structures along simulated lines-of-sight. The sensitivity of spectroscopic observables to the physical parameters within each of those structures is discussed

    Hot corrosion of gas turbine engine components involves deposits of Na2SO4 which are produced by reactions between NaCl and oxides of sulfur. For the present investigation, NaCl single crystals were exposed at 100 to 850 C to gaseous mixtures of SO3, SO2, and O2.     Ensuring the virological safety of biologicals is challenging due to the risk of viral contamination of raw materials and cell banks, and exposure during in-process handling to known and/or emerging viral pathogens. Viruses may contaminate raw materials and biologicals intended for human or veterinary use and remain undetected until appropriate testing measures are employed. The outbreak and expansive spread of the mosquito-borne flavivirus Zika virus (ZIKV) poses challenges to screening human- and animal -derived products used in the manufacture of biologicals. Here, we report the results of an in vitro study where detector cell lines were challenged with African and Asian lineages of ZIKV. We demonstrate that this pathogen is robustly detectable by in vitro assay, thereby providing assurance of detection of ZIKV, and in turn underpinning the robustness of in vitro virology assays in safety testing of biologicals

    The evolution of plasma parameters on a coronal source surface at 2.3 Rs during solar minimum

    We analyze data from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory to produce global maps of coronal outflow velocities and densities in the regions where the solar wind is undergoing acceleration. The maps use UV and white light coronal data obtained from the Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer and the Large Angle Spectroscopic Coronagraph, respectively, and a Doppler dimming analysis to determine the mean outflow velocities. The outflow velocities are defined on a sphere at 2.3 Rs from Sun-center and are organized by Carrington Rotations during the solar minimum period at the start of solar cycle 23. We use the outflow velocity and density maps to show that while the solar minimum corona is relatively stable during its early stages, the shrinkage of the north polar hole in the later stages leads to changes in both the global areal expansion of the coronal hole and the derived internal flux tube expansion factors of the solar wind. The polar hole areal expansion factor and the flux tube expansion factors (between the coronal base and 2.3 Rs) start out as super-radial but then they become more nearly radial as the corona progresses away from solar minimum. The results also support the idea that the largest flux tube expansion factors are located near the coronal hole/streamer interface, at least during the deepest part of the solar minimum period.Comment: 12 Figures, Accepted for publication in Ap

    Chronic Intermittent Materno-Fetal Hyperoxygenation in Late Gestation May Improve on Hypoplastic Cardiovascular Structures Associated with Cardiac Malformations in Human Fetuses

    Hypoplasia of cardiovascular structures is a common finding in fetuses with cardiac malformations. Materno-fetal hyperoxygenation (HO) during late gestation promotes venous return to the fetal heart. This analysis in human fetuses sought to define whether this “loading” effect might improve hypoplastic cardiovascular dimensions. Fifteen late-gestation fetuses presented with varying degrees of hypoplastic cardiovascular structures. In these cases, chronic intermittent materno-fetal HO was administered during periods ranging from 8 to 33 days. Cardiac measurements were taken before and at the end of treatment and translated into Z-scores as well as plotted on normal growth charts. During the treatment period, chronic intermittent materno-fetal HO was associated with improved dimensions of ≥1 hypoplastic cardiovascular structures in most fetuses. However, in some cases, the effect of HO was neutralized or impaired by the presence of ventricular septal defects as well as obstructions to ventricular filling or emptying. Chronic intermittent materno-fetal HO near term may be associated with improvements of hypoplastic cardiovascular dimensions in fetuses with a spectrum of cardiac malformations. This effect may facilitate postnatal treatment and improve prognosis in suitable cases

Based on a content analysis of legislation, this pa-per introduces a novel yearly database of 37 countries between 1910 and 2020 to uncover the“hidden welfare state” of taxes on imputed rent, deductibility of mortgage payments, housingcapital gains tax and VAT on newly built dwellings. Summary indices of homeownership at-tractiveness and neutrality of the tax code show that fiscal homeownership policies have beenin decline until the 1980s and risen ever since. They are in place where finance is liberally andlabor restrictively regulated. Contrary to the classical welfare state, they are not associatedwith an economic logic of industrialism or left-wing governments, but a rent-regulation alter-native of Common-Law jurisdictions and smaller countries.     Large superplastic strain in non-modulated epitaxial Ni-Mn-Ga films

    The phase transformation and superplastic characteristics of free-standing epitaxial Ni-Mn-Ga stripes are reported. The stripes are prepared by micromachining a 1 μm thick Ni-Mn-Ga film sputter-deposited on a single crystalline MgO (100) substrate using optical lithography and a Chromium-based sacrificial layer technology. The stripes are oriented at angles of 0 and 45 degrees with respect to the Ni-Mn-Ga unit cell. Electrical resistance versus temperature characteristics reveal a reversible thermally induced phase transformation between 169°C and 191°C. Stress-strain measurements are performed with the stress applied along the [100]Ni-Mn-Ga as well as [110]Ni-Mn-Ga direction. Depending on the orientation, the twinning stress ranges between 25 and 30 MPa, respectively. For the [100] Ni-Mn-Ga and [110]Ni-Mn-Ga directions, superplastic behaviour with a strain plateau of 12 % and 4% are observed, respectively, indicating stress-induced reorientation of non-modulated martensite variants
