Variability in regional background aerosols within the Mediterranean
The main objective of this study is the identification of major factors controlling levels and chemical composition of aerosols in the regional background (RB) along the Mediterranean Basin (MB). To this end, data on PM levels and speciation from Montseny (MSY, NE Spain), Finokalia (FKL, Southern Greece) and Erdemli (ERL, Southern Turkey) for the period 2001 to 2008 are evaluated. Important differences on PM levels and composition are evident when comparing the Western and Eastern MBs. The results manifest W-E and N-S PM 10 and PM2.5 gradients along the MB, attributed to the higher frequency and intensity of African dust outbreaks in the EMB, while for PM1 very similar levels are encountered. PM in the EMB is characterized by higher levels of crustal material and sulphate as compared to WMB (and central European sites), however, RB nitrate and OC + EC levels are relatively constant across the Mediterranean and lower than other European sites. Marked seasonal trends are evidenced for PM levels, nitrate (WMB), ammonium and sulphate. Also relatively higher levels of V and Ni (WMB) are measured in the Mediterranean basin, probably as a consequence of high emissions from fuel-oil combustion (power generation, industrial and shipping emissions). Enhanced sulphate levels in EMB compared to WMB were measured. The high levels of sulphate in the EMB may deplete the available gas-phase NH3 so that little ammonium nitrate can form due to the low NH3 levels. This study illustrates the existence of three very important features within the Mediterranean that need to be accounted for when modeling climate effects of aerosols in the area, namely: a) the increasing gradient of dust from WMB to EMB; b) the change of hygroscopic behavior of mineral aerosols (dust) via nitration and sulfation; and c) the abundance of highly hygroscopic aerosols during high insolation (low cloud formation) periods

Effect of different storage conditions on analytical and sensory quality of thermally processed milk based germinated Foxtail millet porridge
Foxtail millet porridge was prepared using germinated grains and milk and was evaluated for its storage stability after thermal processing at Ultra High Temperatures (UHT) of 142 oC for 5 s and Retort processing temperatures of 121.5 oC for 15 min. Various physical, chemical and microbial changes of the porridge were studied for a storage period of 180 days at 25 ± 1 oC. Using consumer perception and survival analysis, the predicted shelf life of the UHT treated and retort processed foxtail millet porridge samples stored at 25 ± 1 oC was found to be 186 ± 9 days and 245 ± 15 days, respectively. Also, data from consumer liking, profiling, physical, chemical and microbial parameters showed significant changes (p < 0.05) in the thermally treated packaged porridge samples over time. As the consumer overall acceptability decreased, the detection of positive attributes (Thick and uniformly coloured texture and appearance; grainy mouth texture; caramel taste and aroma) in the porridge decreased, while the detection of negative attributes (Uneven, decoloured, and curdled texture and appearance; sticky mouth texture; cooked, sour and off smell; cooked, sour and off taste) increased. The present study could establish a significant difference (p < 0.05) in the storage induced properties of UHT and retort processed porridge samples. The analytical evaluation of foxtail millet porridge found that UHT treated porridge was better in quality, but consumers preferred retort processed porridge
Analysis of posterior circulation diameters depending on age, sex and side by computed tomography angiography
Background: Posterior circulation of brain is important because of vital organsâ blood supply provided by them. In this study, we evaluate the relationship of posterior circulation measurements with age, gender and side by using computed tomography angiography (CTA) images.Materials and methods: A total 199 brain CTA examinations were retrospectively analysed for all posterior circulation arteries (vertebral artery, basilar artery, posterior cerebral artery [PCA], superior cerebellar artery [SCA], anterior inferior cerebellar artery, and posterior inferior cerebellar artery [PICA]) to compare the difference based on age, gender and side. Results: There is no correlation between age and the mean diameters of all vessels (p > 0.05). The mean diameter of left vertebral artery was higher than right vertebral artery in all genders (p = 0.004 for males and p < 0.001 for females). The mean diameter of left SCA and PICA were higher than right SCA and PICA in females (p = 0.032 and p = 0.027, respectively). The mean diameters of basilar, left PCA, left SCA, left vertebral, right PCA, right SCA, right PICA and right vertebral artery were higher in males and that differences were statistically significant (p < 0.001, p = 0.002, p = 0.006, p = 0.004, p = 0.001, p = 0.003, p = 0.002, and p = 0.006, respectively). Conclusions: The posterior circulation vessel diameter is not affected by aging. The mean diameters of basilar artery, both PCAs, both SCAs, right PICA, both vertebral arteries were higher in males. The mean diameter of left vertebral artery is higher than that of right vertebral artery in all genders
PT-symmetric Solutions of Schrodinger Equation with position-dependent mass via Point Canonical Transformation
PT-symmetric solutions of Schrodinger equation are obtained for the Scarf and
generalized harmonic oscillator potentials with the position-dependent mass. A
general point canonical transformation is applied by using a free parameter.
Three different forms of mass distributions are used. A set of the energy
eigenvalues of the bound states and corresponding wave functions for target
potentials are obtained as a function of the free parameter.Comment: 13 page
A Large Hadron Electron Collider at CERN
This document provides a brief overview of the recently published report on
the design of the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), which comprises its
physics programme, accelerator physics, technology and main detector concepts.
The LHeC exploits and develops challenging, though principally existing,
accelerator and detector technologies. This summary is complemented by brief
illustrations of some of the highlights of the physics programme, which relies
on a vastly extended kinematic range, luminosity and unprecedented precision in
deep inelastic scattering. Illustrations are provided regarding high precision
QCD, new physics (Higgs, SUSY) and electron-ion physics. The LHeC is designed
to run synchronously with the LHC in the twenties and to achieve an integrated
luminosity of O(100) fb. It will become the cleanest high resolution
microscope of mankind and will substantially extend as well as complement the
investigation of the physics of the TeV energy scale, which has been enabled by
the LHC

TĂŒrkiyeâde bulunan yoÄun bakımlarda sabun, kaÄıt havlu ve alkol bazlı el dezenfektanı yeterli mi?: Phokai çalıĆması sonuçları
Introduction: Hand hygiene is one of the most effective infection control measures to prevent the spread of healthcare-associated infections (HCAI). Water, soap, paper towel and hand disinfectant must be available and adequate in terms of effective hand hygiene. The adequacy of hand hygiene products or keeping water-soap and paper towel is still a problem for many developing countries like Turkey. In this multicenter study, we analyzed the adequacy in number and availability of hand hygiene products.Materials and Methods: This study was performed in all intensive care units (ICUs) of 41 hospitals (27 tertiary-care educational, 10 state and four private hospitals) from 22 cities located in seven geographical regions of Turkey. We analyzed water, soap, paper towel and alcohol-based hand disinfectant adequacy on four different days, two of which were in summer during the vacation time (August, 27th and 31st 2016) and two in autumn (October, 12th and 15th 2016).Results: The total number of ICUs and intensive care beds in 41 participating centers were 214 and 2357, respectively. Overall, there was no soap in 3-11% of sinks and no paper towel in 10-18% of sinks while there was no alcohol-based hand disinfectant in 1-4.7% of hand disinfectant units on the observation days. When we compared the number of sinks with soap and/or paper towel on weekdays vs. weekends, there was no significant difference in summer. However, on autumn weekdays, the number of sinks with soap and paper towel was significantly lower on weekend days (p<0.0001, p<0.0001) while the number of hand disinfectant units with alcohol-based disinfectant was significantly higher (p<0.0001).Conclusion: There should be adequate and accessible hand hygiene materials for effective hand hygiene. In this study, we found that soap and paper towels were inadequate on the observation days in 3-11% and 10-18% of units, respectively. Attention should be paid on soap and paper towel supply at weekends as well
Functional sex differences in human primary auditory cortex
Background We used PET to study cortical activation during auditory stimulation and found sex differences in the human primary auditory cortex (PAC). Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was measured in 10 male and 10 female volunteers while listening to sounds (music or white noise) and during a baseline (no auditory stimulation). Results and discussion We found a sex difference in activation of the left and right PAC when comparing music to noise. The PAC was more activated by music than by noise in both men and women. But this difference between the two stimuli was significantly higher in men than in women. To investigate whether this difference could be attributed to either music or noise, we compared both stimuli with the baseline and revealed that noise gave a significantly higher activation in the female PAC than in the male PAC. Moreover, the male group showed a deactivation in the right prefrontal cortex when comparing noise to the baseline, which was not present in the female group. Interestingly, the auditory and prefrontal regions are anatomically and functionally linked and the prefrontal cortex is known to be engaged in auditory tasks that involve sustained or selective auditory attention. Thus we hypothesize that differences in attention result in a different deactivation of the right prefrontal cortex, which in turn modulates the activation of the PAC and thus explains the sex differences found in the activation of the PAC. Conclusion Our results suggest that sex is an important factor in auditory brain studies
A phase I/II study of siltuximab (CNTO 328), an anti-interleukin-6 monoclonal antibody, in metastatic renal cell cancer
Background: Serum interleukin (IL)-6 levels correlate with disease outcomes in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients. Siltuximab, a chimeric, murine-human mAb against IL-6, was evaluated in a three-part phase I/II study in patients with progressive metastatic RCC.
Methods: In part 1, 11 patients received 1, 3, 6, or 12âmgâkgâ1 at weeks 1, 4 and q2w Ă 2 thereafter; in part 2, 37 patients randomly received 3 or 6âmgâkgâ1 q3w Ă 4; in part 3, 20 low-risk patients received 6âmgâkgâ1 q2w Ă 6. Modified WHO response criteria were assessed at weeks 7, 11, the 6-week follow-up, and when clinically indicated.
Results: Siltuximab was well tolerated overall, with no maximum tolerated dose or immune response observed. In all, 5 out of 11, 17 out of 37, and 9 out of 20 patients in parts 1, 2, and 3, respectively, received extended treatment beyond 4â6 initial infusions. In part 2, stable disease (SD) (greater than or equal to11weeks) or better was achieved by 11 out of 17 (65%) 3âmgâkgâ1 treated patients (one partial response (PR) ~8 months, 10 SD) and 10 out of 20 (50%) 6âmgâkgâ1 treated patients (10 SD). In part 3, documented complete or PR was not observed, but 13 out of 20 (65%) patients achieved SD.
Conclusion: Siltuximab stabilised disease in >50% of progressive metastatic RCC patients. One PR was observed. Given the favourable safety profile of siltuximab and poor correlation of tumour shrinkage with clinical benefit demonstrated for other non-cytotoxic therapies, further evaluation of dose-escalation strategies and/or combination therapy may be considered for patients with RCC
An experiment for electron-hadron scattering at the LHC
Novel considerations are presented on the physics, apparatus and accelerator
designs for a future, luminous, energy frontier electron-hadron ()
scattering experiment at the LHC in the thirties for which key physics topics
and their relation to the hadron-hadron HL-LHC physics programme are discussed.
Demands are derived set by these physics topics on the design of the LHeC
detector, a corresponding update of which is described. Optimisations on the
accelerator design, especially the interaction region (IR), are presented.
Initial accelerator considerations indicate that a common IR is possible to be
built which alternately could serve and collisions while other
experiments would stay on in either condition. A forward-backward
symmetrised option of the LHeC detector is sketched which would permit
extending the LHeC physics programme to also include aspects of hadron-hadron
physics. The vision of a joint and physics experiment is shown to
open new prospects for solving fundamental problems of high energy heavy-ion
physics including the partonic structure of nuclei and the emergence of
hydrodynamics in quantum field theory while the genuine TeV scale DIS physics
is of unprecedented rank.Comment: 27 pages, 24 figures, 6 tables; to appear in Eur. Phys. J.
