Blue horizontal branch stars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: II. Kinematics of the Galactic halo
We carry out a maximum-likelihood kinematic analysis of a sample of 1170 blue
horizontal branch (BHB) stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey presented in
Sirko et al. (2003) (Paper I). Monte Carlo simulations and resampling show that
the results are robust to distance and velocity errors at least as large as the
estimated errors from Paper I. The best-fit velocities of the Sun (circular)
and halo (rotational) are 245.9 +/- 13.5 km/s and 23.8 +/- 20.1 km/s but are
strongly covariant, so that v_0 - v_halo = 222.1 +/- 7.7 km/s. If one adopts
standard values for the local standard of rest and solar motion, then the halo
scarcely rotates. The velocity ellipsoid inferred for our sample is much more
isotropic [(sigma_r,sigma_theta,sigma_phi) = (101.4 +/- 2.8, 97.7 +/- 16.4,
107.4 +/- 16.6) km/s] than that of halo stars in the solar neighborhood, in
agreement with a recent study of the distant halo by Sommer-Larsen et al.
(1997). The line-of-sight velocity distribution of the entire sample, corrected
for the Sun's motion, is accurately gaussian with a dispersion of 101.6 +/- 3.0

Representation to the accident and emergency department within 1-year of a fractured neck of femur
Background:
The fractured neck of femur (NOF) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. The mortality attendant upon such fractures is 10% at 1 month and 30% at one year with a cost to the NHS of ÂŁ1.4 billion annually. This retrospective study sought to examine rates and prevailing trends in representation to A&E in the year following a NOF fracture in an attempt to identify the leading causes behind the morbidity and mortality associated with this fracture.
Methods:
1108 patients who suffered a fractured NOF between 1 January 2002 and 31 December 2007 were identified from a University Hospital A&E database. This database was then used to identify those patients who represented within 1-year following the initial fracture. The presenting complaint, provisional diagnosis and the outcome of this presentation were identified at this time.
Results:
234 patients (21%) returned to A&E on 368 occasions in the year following a hip fracture. 77% (284/368) of these presentations necessitated admission. Falls, infection and fracture were the leading causes of representation. Falls accounted for 20% (57/284) of admissions; 20.7% of patients were admitted because of a fracture, while 56.6% of admissions were for medical ailments of which infection was the chief precipitant (28% (45/161)).
Discussion:
The causes for representation are varied and multifactorial. The results of this study suggest that some of those events or ailments necessitating readmission may be obviated and potentially reduced by interventions that can be instituted during the primary admission and continued following discharge
NYU-VAGC: a galaxy catalog based on new public surveys
Here we present the New York University Value-Added Galaxy Catalog
(NYU-VAGC), a catalog of local galaxies (mostly below a redshift of about 0.3)
based on a set of publicly-released surveys (including the 2dFGRS, 2MASS, PSCz,
FIRST, and RC3) matched to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 2.
Excluding areas masked by bright stars, the photometric sample covers 3514
square degrees and the spectroscopic sample covers 2627 square degrees (with
about 85% completeness). Earlier, proprietary versions of this catalog have
formed the basis of many SDSS investigations of the power spectrum, correlation
function, and luminosity function of galaxies. We calculate and compile derived
quantities (for example, K-corrections and structural parameters for galaxies).
The SDSS catalog presented here is photometrically recalibrated, reducing
systematic calibration errors across the sky from about 2% to about 1%. We
include an explicit description of the geometry of the catalog, including all
imaging and targeting information as a function of sky position. Finally, we
have performed eyeball quality checks on a large number of objects in the
catalog in order to flag deblending and other errors. This catalog is
complementary to the SDSS Archive Servers, in that NYU-VAGC's calibration,
geometrical description, and conveniently small size are specifically designed
for studying galaxy properties and large-scale structure statistics using the

Systematic techniques for assisting recruitment to trials (START): study protocol for embedded, randomized controlled trials
BACKGROUND: Randomized controlled trials play a central role in evidence-based practice, but recruitment of participants, and retention of them once in the trial, is challenging. Moreover, there is a dearth of evidence that research teams can use to inform the development of their recruitment and retention strategies. As with other healthcare initiatives, the fairest test of the effectiveness of a recruitment strategy is a trial comparing alternatives, which for recruitment would mean embedding a recruitment trial within an ongoing host trial. Systematic reviews indicate that such studies are rare. Embedded trials are largely delivered in an ad hoc way, with interventions almost always developed in isolation and tested in the context of a single host trial, limiting their ability to contribute to a body of evidence with regard to a single recruitment intervention and to researchers working in different contexts. METHODS/DESIGN: The Systematic Techniques for Assisting Recruitment to Trials (START) program is funded by the United Kingdom Medical Research Council (MRC) Methodology Research Programme to support the routine adoption of embedded trials to test standardized recruitment interventions across ongoing host trials. To achieve this aim, the program involves three interrelated work packages: (1) methodology - to develop guidelines for the design, analysis and reporting of embedded recruitment studies; (2) interventions - to develop effective and useful recruitment interventions; and (3) implementation - to recruit host trials and test interventions through embedded studies. DISCUSSION: Successful completion of the START program will provide a model for a platform for the wider trials community to use to evaluate recruitment interventions or, potentially, other types of intervention linked to trial conduct. It will also increase the evidence base for two types of recruitment intervention. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The START protocol covers the methodology for embedded trials. Distinct Stromal Cell Factor Combinations Can Separately Control Hematopoietic Stem Cell Survival, Proliferation, and Self-Renewal
SummaryHematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are identified by their ability to sustain prolonged blood cell production in vivo, although recent evidence suggests that durable self-renewal (DSR) is shared by HSC subtypes with distinct self-perpetuating differentiation programs. Net expansions of DSR-HSCs occur in vivo, but molecularly defined conditions that support similar responses in vitro are lacking. We hypothesized that this might require a combination of factors that differentially promote HSC viability, proliferation, and self-renewal. We now demonstrate that HSC survival and maintenance of DSR potential are variably supported by different Steel factor (SF)-containing cocktails with similar HSC-mitogenic activities. In addition, stromal cells produce other factors, including nerve growth factor and collagen 1, that can antagonize the apoptosis of initially quiescent adult HSCs and, in combination with SF and interleukin-11, produce >15-fold net expansions of DSR-HSCs ex vivo within 7 days. Near-infrared observations of water-ice in OH/IR stars
A search for the near-infrared water-ice absorption band was made in a number
of very red OH/IR stars which are known to exhibit the 10um silicate
absorption. As a by-product, accurate positions of these highly reddened
objects are obtained. We derived a dust mass loss rate for each object by
modelling the spectral energy distribution and the gas mass loss rate by
solving the equation of motion for the dust drag wind. The derived mass loss
rates show a strong correlation with the silicate optical depth as well as that
of the water-ice. The stars have a high mass loss rate (> 1.0E-4 Msun/yr) with
an average gas-to-dust mass ratio of 110. In objects which show the 3.1um
water-ice absorption, the near-IR slope is much steeper than those with no
water-ice. Comparison between our calculated mass loss rates and those derived
from OH and CO observations indicates that these stars have recently increased

Social cues in the expression of sequential alternative reproductive tactics in young males of the peacock blenny, Solaria pavo
Phenotypic change in response to variation in environmental cues has been widely documented in fish. Transitions in social dominance, in particular, have been shown to induce a rapid switch in reproductive phenotypes in many species. However, this effect has been mainly studied in adults and focused on behavioural transitions. The way social cues constraint the phenotypic development of juveniles remains poorly studied in fish. We tested the importance of social dominance and density in the phenotypic development of juveniles of the peacock blenny Solaria pavo. This species shows sequential male alternative reproductive tactics. In the first breeding season males can reproduce as nest-holders or as parasitic males (female-mimicking), or postpone reproduction; from the following season afterwards all males reproduce as nest-holders. Parasitic males have relatively larger testes that lack a testicular gland, present in the testes of nest-holders. The testicular gland is the main source of androgens in the testes and accordingly nest-holders have higher circulating androgen levels. In addition, exogenous androgen administration to parasitic males promotes the development of secondary sexual characters (SSC) only present in nest-holders such as a head crest and an anal gland. We raised juveniles under a high or low-density treatment and monitored social interactions for 1 month. No significant effect of density on the development of juvenile males was detected. However, within each replicate, the relative body size of juvenile males at the beginning of the experiment determined their dominance status, with dominant males developing towards the nest-holder morphotype. Dominant males engaged in more nest defence behaviour, showed larger testicular glands, had higher levels of 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) and testosterone (T) and developed more SSC, as compared to subordinate males. However, these effects of social dominance were moderated by body condition as only dominant males in good body condition developed SSC. The effect of social dominance and of the area of the testicular gland on the development of SSC was mediated by 11-KT and on the expression of nest defence behaviour by T. Interestingly, in spite of the higher androgen levels and more pronounced morphologic development of SSC in dominant individuals, gonadal development was independent of social dominance and most fish still had underdeveloped testis at the end of the experiment. In conclusion, social dominance promoted the development of the testicular gland, an increase in circulating androgen levels and the development of SSC, but did not promote testicular development. This suggests a dissociation of mechanisms underlying sexual maturation and the expression of male reproductive traits. This dissociation seems to be the key for the occurrence of female-mimicking males in this species, which are sexually mature despite lacking the SSC typical of nest-holdets. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. Evolutionary trade-off between vocal tract and testes dimensions in howler monkeys.
Males often face a trade-off between investments in precopulatory and postcopulatory traits [1], particularly when male-male contest competition determines access to mates [2]. To date, studies of precopulatory strategies have largely focused on visual ornaments (e.g., coloration) or weapon morphology (e.g., antlers, horns, and canines). However, vocalizations can also play an important role in both male competition and female choice [3-5]. We investigated variation in vocal tract dimensions among male howler monkeys (Alouatta spp.), which produce loud roars using a highly specialized and greatly enlarged hyoid bone and larynx [6]. We examined the relative male investment in hyoids and testes among howler monkey species in relation to the level of male-male competition and analyzed the acoustic consequences of variation in hyoid morphology. Species characterized by single-male groups have large hyoids and small testes, suggesting high levels of vocally mediated competition. Larger hyoids lower formant frequencies, probably increasing the acoustic impression of male body size and playing a role analogous to investment in large body size or weaponry. Across species, as the number of males per group increases, testes volume also increases, indicating higher levels of postcopulatory sperm competition, while hyoid volume decreases.
