    Analysis of a finite difference grid

    Some means of assessing the suitability of a mesh network for a finite difference calculation are investigated in this study. This has been done by a study of the nonlinear truncation errors of the scheme. It turns out that the mesh can not be properly assessed a priori. The effect of the mesh on the numerical solution depends on several factors including the mesh itself, the numerical algorithm, and the solution. Several recommendations are made with regard to generating the mesh and to assessing its suitability for a particular numerical calculation

The procedure is valid for all Mach and Prandtl numbers, but limited to Reynolds numbers based on wire diameter between 0.1 and 300. The fluids are limited to gases which approximate ideal gas behavior. Losses due to radiation, free convection and conduction are included

    Lagrangian computation of inviscid compressible flows

    A Lagrangian method is developed to solve the Euler equations of gas dynamics. The solution of the equations is obtained by a numerical computation with the well-known Flux-Corrected-Transport (FCT) numerical method. This procedure is modified so that the boundary treatment is accurate and relatively simple. Shock waves and other flow discontinuities are captured monotonically without any type of fitting procedures. The Lagrangian method is employed so that the problem of mesh generation is completely avoided. The method is applicable to all Mach numbers except the low subsonic range where compressibility effects are small. The method is applied to a one-dimensional Riemann problem (shock tube) and to a two-dimensional supersonic channel flow with reflecting shock waves

    Hypersonic blunt body computations including real gas effects

    The recently developed second-order explicit and implicit total variation diminishing (TVD) shock-capturing methods of the Harten and Yee, Yee, and van Leer types in conjunction with a generalized Roe's approximate Riemann solver of Vinokur and the generalized flux-vector splittings of Vinokur and Montagne for two-dimensional hypersonic real gas flows are studied. A previous study on one-dimensional unsteady problems indicated that these schemes produce good shock-capturing capability and that the state equation does not have a large effect on the general behavior of these methods for a wide range of flow conditions for equilibrium air. The objective of this paper is to investigate the applicability and shock resolution of these schemes for two-dimensional steady-state hypersonic blunt body flows. The main contribution of this paper is to identify some of the elements and parameters which can affect the convergence rate for high Mach numbers or real gases but have negligible effect for low Mach number cases for steady-state inviscid blunt body flows

    High- Resolution Shock-Capturing Schemes for Inviscid and Viscous Hypersonic Flows

    A class of high-resolution implicit total variation diminishing (TVD) type algorithms suitable for transonic multidimensional Euler and Navier-Stokes equations has been extended to hypersonic computations. The improved conservative shock-capturing schemes are spatially second- and third-order and are fully implicit. They can be first- or second-order accurate in time and are suitable for either steady or unsteady calculations. Enhancement of stability and convergence rate for hypersonic flows is discussed. With the proper choice of the temporal discretization and implicit linearization, these schemes are fairly efficient and accurate for very complex two-dimensional hypersonic in viscid and viscous shock interactions. This study is complemented by a variety of steady and unsteady viscous and inviscid hypersonic blunt body flow computations. Due to the inherent stiffness of viscous flow problems, numerical experiments indicated that the convergence rate is in general slower for viscous flows than for inviscid steady flows

    The Definition, Current Knowledge and Implementation of Welfare for Farm Animals--A Personal View

    Being humane to farm animals (welfare) must include (1) having a sound knowledge of their normal and anomalous behavior responses in a farm context and heeding this in a practical way and (2) adopting handling procedures which elicit minimal distress in the species concerned. Building up an ethogram of predictable responses and recording the patterns of behavior during key events, mating, birth, and care of the young are essential. There are still gaps in the recorded ethograms offarm animals. Objective measurements of distress, including an index of its seriousness, are also a priority. The results from animal preference tests can provide some answers on which to base practical husbandry in the areas of housing design, optimal temperatures, the need for companions, factors which elicit aggression, acceptable feeds, and species\u27 sensory capacities. Handling preference tests could also be undertaken. Overcoming inertia is a problem for both the owners and the animals if changes are to be made within established systems of production. Gross cruelty can be countered by legislation, but the motivation for ongoing good welfare of farmed animals must come from within the workers/owners on the site. Trying to force it by legislation may be counter-productive. A five-point program for promoting practical animal welfare is outlined

    Diagnosis of Hepatozoon canis in young dogs by cytology and PCR

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Hepatozoon canis </it>is a widespread tick-borne protozoan affecting dogs. The diagnosis of <it>H. canis </it>infection is usually performed by cytology of blood or buffy coat smears, but this method may not be sensitive. Our study aimed to evaluate the best method to achieve a parasitological diagnosis of <it>H. canis </it>infection in a population of receptive young dogs, previously negative by cytology and exposed to tick infestation for one summer season.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 73 mongrel dogs and ten beagles younger than 18 months of age, living in an animal shelter in southern Italy where dogs are highly infested by <it>Rhipicephalus sanguineus</it>, were included in this study. In March-April 2009 and in October 2009, blood and bone marrow were sampled from each dog. Blood, buffy coat and bone marrow were examined by cytology only (at the first sampling) and also by PCR for <it>H. canis </it>(second sampling). In March-April 2009, only one dog was positive for <it>H. canis </it>by cytological examination, whereas in October 2009 (after the summer season), the overall incidence of <it>H. canis </it>infection by cytological examinations was 43.9%. Molecular tests carried out on samples taken in October 2009 showed a considerably higher number of dogs positive by PCR (from 27.7% up to 51.2% on skin and buffy coat tissues, respectively), with an overall positivity of 57.8%. All animals, but one, which were positive by cytology were also PCR-positive. PCR on blood or buffy coat detected the highest number of <it>H. canis</it>-positive dogs displaying a sensitivity of 85.7% for both tissues that increased up to 98% when used in parallel. Twenty-six (74.8%) out of the 28 <it>H. canis</it>-positive dogs presented hematological abnormalities, eosinophilia being the commonest alteration observed.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The results suggest that PCR on buffy coat and blood is the best diagnostic assay for detecting <it>H. canis </it>infection in dogs, although when PCR is not available, cytology on buffy coat should be preferred to blood smear evaluation. This study has also demonstrated that <it>H. canis </it>infection can spread among young dogs infested by <it>R. sanguineus </it>and be present in the majority of the exposed population within 6 months.</p
