The effect of cold priming on the fitness of Arabidopsis thaliana accessions under natural and controlled conditions

Priming improves an organism's performance upon a future stress. To test whether cold priming supports protection in spring and how it is affected by cold acclimation, we compared seven Arabidopsis accessions with different cold acclimation potentials in the field and in the greenhouse for growth, photosynthetic performance and reproductive fitness in March and May after a 14 day long cold-pretreatment at 4 °C. In the plants transferred to the field in May, the effect of the cold pretreatment on the seed yield correlated with the cold acclimation potential of the accessions. In the March transferred plants, the reproductive fitness was most supported by the cold pretreatment in the accessions with the weakest cold acclimation potential. The fitness effect was linked to long-term effects of the cold pretreatment on photosystem II activity stabilization and leaf blade expansion. The study demonstrated that cold priming stronger impacts on plant fitness than cold acclimation in spring in accessions with intermediate and low cold acclimation potential

Multiple parton interactions in high-density QCD matter

    Get PDF
Multiple interactions of quarks and gluons in high-energy heavy-ion collisions may give rise to interesting phemomena of color charges propagating in high-density QCD matter. We study the dynamics of multi-parton systems produced in nucleus-nucleus collisions at energies corresponding the the CERN SPS and the future BNL RHIC experiments. Due to the complexity of the multi-particle dynamics we choose to employ the parton cascade model in order to simulate the development of multiple parton scatterings and associated stimulated emision processes. Our results indicate a non-linear increase with nuclear mass A of, e.g., parton multiplicity, energy density, strangeness, and contrast a linear A-scaling as in Glauber-type approaches. If multiple interactions are suppressed and only single parton scatterings (no re-interactions) are considered, we recover such a linear behavior. It remains to be studied whether these results on the parton level can be experimentally seen in final-state observables, such as the charged particle multiplicity, the magnitude of produced transverse energy, or the number of produced strange hadrons.Comment: 15 pages including 9 postscript figure

[EN] The holotypes of three species inquirendae siphonophores collected in Japanese waters and described by Tamiji Kawamura were re-examined. It is considered that Bathyphysa japonica is not a valid species because there are no characters that distinguish it from other Bathyphysa species; Athorybia longifolia is an incorrectly described specimen of A. rosacea; and Forskalia misakiensis is a wrongly described and badly preserved specimen, probably of F. edwardsi[ES] Han sido reexaminados los holotipos de tres sifonóforos species inquirendae recogidos en aguas japonesas y que fueron descritos por Tamiji Kawamura. Se considera que Bathyphysa japonica no es una especie válida porque no se observan caracteres que la distingan de otras especies de Bathyphysa. Athorybia longifolia es un espécimen de A. rosacea descrito incorrectamente; y Forskalia misakiensis es un espécimen descrito erroneamente y preservado inadecuadamente, probablemente de F. edwardsiThis study was sponsored by the Japanese Society for the Promotion of SciencePeer reviewe

Authoritarianism beyond disposition : a literature review of research on contextual antecedents

    Get PDF
A core debate in authoritarianism research relates to the stability of authoritarianism, i.e., whether it is a dispositional phenomenon socialized in early childhood or even genetically predisposed, or whether it is impacted by time-sensitive, exterior conditions. Whereas certain individual authoritarian tendencies emerge as a rather stable personality trait, there is also empirical evidence for a dynamic influence of external factors. This review article provides a conceptual multilevel framework for the study of authoritarianism and offers an insight into the state-of-research on socialization and situational influences, with a particular focus on threat. Findings are discussed with regard to key theories of authoritarianism
