Super-resolution hyper-spectral imaging for the direct visualization of local bandgap heterogeneity
Optical hyperspectral imaging based on absorption and scattering of photons
at the visible and adjacent frequencies denotes one of the most informative and
inclusive characterization methods in material research. Unfortunately,
restricted by the diffraction limit of light, it is unable to resolve the
nanoscale inhomogeneity in light-matter interactions, which is diagnostic of
the local modulation in material structure and properties. Moreover, many
nanomaterials have highly anisotropic optical properties that are outstandingly
appealing yet hard to characterize through conventional optical methods.
Therefore, there has been a pressing demand in the diverse fields including
electronics, photonics, physics, and materials science to extend the optical
hyperspectral imaging into the nanometer length scale. In this work, we report
a super-resolution hyperspectral imaging technique that simultaneously measures
optical absorption and scattering spectra with the illumination from a
tungsten-halogen lamp. We demonstrated sub-5 nm spatial resolution in both
visible and near-infrared wavelengths (415 to 980 nm) for the hyperspectral
imaging of strained single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) and reconstructed
true-color images to reveal the longitudinal and transverse optical
transition-induced light absorption and scattering in the SWNTs. This is the
first time transverse optical absorption in SWNTs were clearly observed
experimentally. The new technique provides rich near-field spectroscopic
information that had made it possible to analyze the spatial modulation of
band-structure along a single SWNT induced through strain engineering.Comment: 4 Figure
Human factors in information leakage: mitigation strategies for information sharing integrity
Structured Abstract Purpose-The purpose of this paper is to explore the human factors triggering information leakage and investigate how companies mitigate insider threat for information sharing integrity. Design/methodology/approach-The methodology employed is multiple case studies approach with in-depth interviews with five Multinational Enterprises/Multinational Corporations. Findings-The findings reveal that information leakage can be approached with human governance mechanism such as organizational ethical climate and information security culture. Besides, higher frequency of leakages negatively affects information sharing integrity. Moreover, this paper also contributes to a research framework which could be a guide to overcome information leakage issue in information sharing. Research limitations/implications-The current study involved MNC/MNEs operating in Malaysia while companies in other countries may have different ethical climate and information sharing culture. Thus, for future research, it will be good to replicate the study in a larger geographic region to verify the findings and insights of this research. Practical implications-This research contributes to the industry and business that are striving towards solving the mounting problem of information leakage by raising awareness of human factors and to take appropriate mitigating governance strategies to preempt information leakage. This paper also contributes to a novel theoretical model that characterizes the iniquities of humans in sharing information, and suggests measures which could be a guide to avert disruptive leakages. Originality/value-This paper is likely an unprecedented research in moulding human governance in the domain of information sharing and its Achilles' heel which is information leakage
Bladder perforation and vesico-haematoma fistula: an uncommon complication of rectus sheath haematoma
Introduction: Rectus sheath haematoma (RSH) has become increasingly common but is often underdiagnosed. Prompt diagnosis will avoid unnecessary investigations and procedures, resulting in early treatment and a better outcome.
Case description: We described a case of a spontaneous RSH with intraperitoneal extension and formation of a vesico-haematoma fistula, which was initially misdiagnosed as a urinary tract infection. The diagnosis was made ten days after admission, when a CT scan showed an over-16 cm RSH with intraperitoneal extension, bladder perforation and a vesico-haematoma fistula. The patient was managed conservatively.
Discussion: RSH accounts for less than 2% of acute abdomen cases and is often unrecognised. Its presentation can mimic other intra-abdominal pathologies, and the diagnosis is often delayed or missed. Complications can arise from an RSH although it is generally viewed as a self-limiting condition.
Conclusion: RSH has become increasingly common, and we would like to highlight the need to include abdominal wall pathologies in the initial differential diagnoses of acute abdomen to avoid delay in diagnosis
Analysis of the Association between CIMP and BRAFV600E in Colorectal Cancer by DNA Methylation Profiling
A CpG island methylator phenotype (CIMP) is displayed by a distinct subset of colorectal cancers with a high frequency of DNA hypermethylation in a specific group of CpG islands. Recent studies have shown that an activating mutation of BRAF (BRAFV600E) is tightly associated with CIMP, raising the question of whether BRAFV600E plays a causal role in the development of CIMP or whether CIMP provides a favorable environment for the acquisition of BRAFV600E. We employed Illumina GoldenGate DNA methylation technology, which interrogates 1,505 CpG sites in 807 different genes, to further study this association. We first examined whether expression of BRAFV600E causes DNA hypermethylation by stably expressing BRAFV600E in the CIMP-negative, BRAF wild-type COLO 320DM colorectal cancer cell line. We determined 100 CIMP-associated CpG sites and examined changes in DNA methylation in eight stably transfected clones over multiple passages. We found that BRAFV600E is not sufficient to induce CIMP in our system. Secondly, considering the alternative possibility, we identified genes whose DNA hypermethylation was closely linked to BRAFV600E and CIMP in 235 primary colorectal tumors. Interestingly, genes that showed the most significant link include those that mediate various signaling pathways implicated in colorectal tumorigenesis, such as BMP3 and BMP6 (BMP signaling), EPHA3, KIT, and FLT1 (receptor tyrosine kinases) and SMO (Hedgehog signaling). Furthermore, we identified CIMP-dependent DNA hypermethylation of IGFBP7, which has been shown to mediate BRAFV600E-induced cellular senescence and apoptosis. Promoter DNA hypermethylation of IGFBP7 was associated with silencing of the gene. CIMP-specific inactivation of BRAFV600E-induced senescence and apoptosis pathways by IGFBP7 DNA hypermethylation might create a favorable context for the acquisition of BRAFV600E in CIMP+ colorectal cancer. Our data will be useful for future investigations toward understanding CIMP in colorectal cancer and gaining insights into the role of aberrant DNA hypermethylation in colorectal tumorigenesis
A novel formula for predicting the ultimate compressive strength of the cylindrically curved plates
The present study aims to develop an empirical formula to predict the ultimate compressive strength of unstiffened cylindrically curved plates. Drawing from an extensive analysis of 400 unique curved plate scenarios under longitudinal compression, we investigated critical parameters: the flank angle (denoted as ɵ), plate aspect ratio (denoted as a/b), and plate slenderness ratio (denoted as β). The ANSYS Nonlinear Finite Element Method (NLFEM) was employed to assess each scenario, considering the average level of initial imperfections (denoted as 0.1β2t) and configurations of one-bay and one-span. It is important to note that the models were designed without accounting for the effects of residual stresses. The simulation data generated from this analysis served as the foundation for developing our empirical formula. The proposed formula strongly agreed with the numerical simulations and experimental test results. This research provides structural engineers with a reliable predictive tool, aiding in more accurate predictions of the ultimate limit state (ULS) of curved plates during early design phases
Recompensation in cirrhosis: unravelling the evolving natural history of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
Recompensation has gained increasing attention in the feld of cirrhosis,
particularly in chronic liver disease with a defnite aetiology. The current
global prevalence of obesity and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
(NAFLD) is increasing, but there is currently a lack of a clear defnition
for recompensation in NAFLD-related cirrhosis. Here, we provide an
up-to-date perspective on the natural history of NAFLD, emphasizing
the reversible nature of the disease, summarizing possible mechanisms
underlying recompensation in NAFLD, discussing challenges that need
to be addressed and outlining future research directions in the feld.
Recompensation is a promising goal in patients with NAFLD-related
cirrhosis, and further studies are needed to explore its underlying
mechanisms and uncover its clinical features

Conversion to aflibercept for diabetic macular edema unresponsive to ranibizumab or bevacizumab
Background: The purpose of this study was to determine if eyes with diabetic macular edema (DME) unresponsive to ranibizumab or bevacizumab would benefit from conversion to aflibercept. Methods: This study was conducted as a retrospective chart review of subjects with DME unresponsive to ranibizumab and/or bevacizumab and subsequently converted to aflibercept. Results: In total, 21 eyes from 19 subjects of mean age 62±15 years were included. The majority of subjects were male (63%). The median number of ranibizumab or bevacizumab injections before switching to aflibercept was six, and the median number of aflibercept injections after switching was three. Median follow-up was 5 months after the switch. Mean central foveal thickness (CFT) was 453.52±143.39 mm immediately prior to the switch. Morphologically, intraretinal cysts were present in all cases. Mean CFT after the first injection decreased significantly to 362.57±92.82 mm (Wilcoxon signed-rank test; P<0.001). At the end of follow-up, the mean CFT was 324.17±98.76 mm (P<0.001). Mean visual acuity was 0.42±0.23 logMAR just prior to the switch, 0.39±0.31 logMAR after one aflibercept injection, and 0.37±0.22 log-MAR at the end of follow-up. The final visual acuity was significantly better than visual acuity before the switch (P=0.04). Conclusion: Eyes with DME unresponsive to multiple ranibizumab/bevacizumab injections demonstrate anatomical and visual improvement on conversion to aflibercept
Antioxidant Properties of the Edible Basidiomycete Armillaria mellea in Submerged Cultures
Antioxidant components, ascorbic acid, total flavonoids and total phenols are produced effectively by Armillaria mellea submerged cultures. Dried mycelia and mycelia-free broths obtained by A. mellea submerged cultures are extracted with methanol and hot water and investigated for antioxidant properties. Methanolic extracts from dried mycelia (MEM) and mycelia-free broth (MEB) and hot water extracts from dried mycelia (HWEM) by A. mellea submerged cultures show good antioxidant properties as evidenced by low EC50 values (<10 mg/mL). Total flavonoid is mainly found in hot water extracts; however, total phenol is rich in methanol and hot water extracts from mycelia. Ascorbic acid and total phenol contents are well correlated with the reducing power and the scavenging effect on superoxide anions. Total flavonoid content is dependent on the antioxidant activity and the chelating effect on ferrous ions. Total antioxidant component contents are closely related to the antioxidant activity and the scavenging superoxide anion ability. Results confirm that extracts with good antioxidant properties from fermenting products by A. mellea are potential good substitutes for synthetic antioxidants and can be applied to antioxidant-related functional food and pharmaceutical industries
Yeast arginine methyltransferase Hmt1p regulates transcription elongation and termination by methylating Npl3p
The heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein Npl3p of budding yeast is a substrate of arginine methyltransferase Hmt1p, but the role of Hmt1p in regulating Npl3p’s functions in transcription antitermination and elongation were unknown. We found that mutants lacking Hmt1p methyltransferase activity exhibit reduced recruitment of Npl3p, but elevated recruitment of a component of mRNA cleavage/termination factor CFI, to the activated GAL10-GAL7 locus. Consistent with this, hmt1 mutants displayed increased termination at the defective gal10-Δ56 terminator. Remarkably, hmt1Δ cells also exhibit diminished recruitment of elongation factor Tho2p and a reduced rate of transcription elongation in vivo. Importantly, the defects in Npl3p and Tho2p recruitment, antitermination and elongation in hmt1Δ cells all were mitigated by substitutions in Npl3p RGG repeats that functionally mimic arginine methylation by Hmt1p. Thus, Hmt1p promotes elongation and suppresses termination at cryptic terminators by methylating RGG repeats in Npl3p. As Hmt1p stimulates dissociation of Tho2p from an Npl3p-mRNP complex, it could act to recycle these elongation and antitermination factors back to sites of ongoing transcription
