The purpose of this study was to investigate the patterns of English language learning strategies used by Emirati EFL university students, and to examine the effects of gender and proficiency level on the use of these strategies. This study was conducted at the United Arab Emirates University. The sample consisted of 190 EFL students at the University General Requirements Unit. Data was collected through administering an Arabic translation of Oxford\u27s (1990) Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) and a demographic questionnaire. The findings indicated that these EFL university students were medium range strategy users and that students favored using metacognitive strategies, followed by social, compensation, affective, cognitive and memory strategies, respectively. Gender and language proficiency levels had no significant effects on strategy use of Emirati EFL university learners, nor did they affect any of each of the six strategy categories. EFL instructors and curriculum planner might find the results of this study beneficial when designing English language instruction and curriculum plans. However, the findings of this study are exclusive to EFL learners at the UAEU and should not be generalized to include all EFL university learners in the UAE

Literary art is a translation, interpretation, transmutation of literary text from language system to another signs system. It is a perception product, interpretation and translation of its original works, not to be duplication but as a form of work of art. This research is intended to reveal Novel covers system of representation. The aim is to find out whether it represents the novel values or not as a literary art. In doing so, this research used qualitative method with Negeri van Oranje and Ayah covers as primary data. The data are chosen using purposive sampling with two basic standards: popularity and Myers design standards. Using representation theory and semiotic as tools of analysis, the research then finds that Negeri van Oranje and Ayah covers have two aspects of presentation: novel content values or theme and marketing aspect. It is presented using two elements: textual and visual. The marketing aspect mostly uses texts elements and the novel content uses visual elements. They are using symbolic signs to build future reader impression and perception of the novel. The symbolic signs and concept are constructed to represent the novel content messages or values. Text features explain the visual features, and the visual features express the text features. Covers have different representation system from the novel but it is not an independent system. In conclusion, not every novel cover can be literary art but Negeri van Oranje and Ayah novel covers can be included as literary art.    Keywords: Literary arts, Novel Cover, Representatio

Translation Analysis of Beauty Terms in Webtoon: The Secret of Angel and Make-Up Man

    Get PDF
The field of beauty every day has rapid changes, so it has many new terms growing in it. The webtoon has now expanded and has several titles translated into various languages, including Indonesian. Not only as entertainment but webtoon also indirectly brings beauty terms that do not yet have their equivalents in Indonesian. This research aims to determine how beauty terms in the webtoon are translated from English to Indonesian. This research uses a qualitative method. The source of data used is 50 chapters from two webtoons entitled The Secret of Angel (2018) and Make-Up Man (2019) in the English version and their translation in Indonesian. The results in this research indicate that based on the translation strategy theory, the translators for both of the webtoon used four different translation strategies namely: loan, unit shift, distribution change, and calque. The implication of this research is that in translating the English beauty terms into Indonesian webtoon translators often employed loan strategy by borrowing or retaining the ST items in the TT. The reasons why the translators often employ the borrowing strategy are due to the limited space in the webtoon and also because the target readers are more familiar with the original English beauty terms

The objective of this research is to investigate the determinants of the performance of the Kuwaiti banking sector before and after the recent financial crisis over the period of 2006-2012. The data utilized is based on the yearly financial statements of the Kuwaiti banks that are listed on Kuwait Stock Exchange over the same period. There are several methods have been used to identify the determinants which impact the performance of the banking sector. In this research, a ratio analysis technique is considered efficient and more reliable method than other approaches. Other factors such as trend, government regulations and other economic factors are also included. The study found that the overall banking sector performance increased considerably in the first two years of the analysis. A significant change in trend is noticed at the onset of the global financial crisis in September 2008, reaching its peak before the global financial crisis. This resulted in decreasing the profitability, return on equity, assets and capital. SOURCES OF RESONANT VORTICES IN AERO-ACOUSTICS RESONANCE FROM TANDEM FLAT PLATES

    Get PDF
Aero-acoustic resonance in flows around flat plates is a major design concern in various practical applications, especially turbomachinery and heat exchangers, due to its significant effects on fatigue rates and radiated noises intensity. Although research has been intensive on the topic, there is still a lot to be understood for effective resonance prediction and control. Resonance in tandem plate systems is characterized by a double response. This study, investigates for the first time, the flow mechanisms responsible for the generation of low-velocity and high-velocity resonances of the double resonance response. Experimental testing and numerical simulation showed that low-velocity resonance vortices are created by normal shedding in the spacing between the plates, while high-velocity resonance vortices are formed by the interaction of vortices that are naturally shed in the gap with the downstream plate. In addition, altering the gap distance between the plates changes the flow regime responsible for the generation of resonant vortices

Nature and Literature have a related meaning relationship. Ecological aspects paradigmatically can have a role in telling the story of literary works. This study aims to determine the narrative functions of ecology in the novel Aroma Karsa. The method of this study is a narrative analysis with a literary ecology approach in the ontological, epistemological and axiological scope focusing on the characters’ narrative functions. The data are obtained through the documentation process, which is in-depth reading; with the aim of identifying, classifying and categorizing the story based on the concept of the narrative function by Vladimir Propp. The results of the study identify four characters who ontologically have a strong relation to the ecological aspects of the story, namely; Sangyang Batari Karsa/Puspa Karsa, Jati Wesi/Randu, Tanaya Suma/Malini, and Raras Prayugung. Epistemologically, it is known that Aroma Karsa (1) builds perception of the cultural environment and ideal environmental criteria, and (2) enriches the ecological knowledge of the readers. Axiologically, Aroma Karsa mutually reveals the symbolic relationship of nature with the readers’ cultural receptions related to myths, medications, fragrances, gender and cleanliness. There are 5 spheres of action (villain, hero, helper, false hero, princess) out of 7 with 24 supporting functions on 4 identified characters. The mechanism of narrative function uses special personage in the form of character condensation to convey the premise of the story. The mechanism of the narrative function is centered on Puspa Karsa who becomes the symbol of ecocentric narrative in the novel Aroma Karsa

Novel cover is like human appearance; it is the first thing that the people will take notice of. It turned out that novel cover is quite essential in influencing the opinions and impression of the reader regarding the novel itself. Novel’s cover using symbols, fonts, and colors, construct cover signs functions. The researcher intends to analyze the novel covers sign functions. The source data of the research is selected using purposive sampling following the standard of a novel cover. This research uses three (3) covers of the novel Undomestic Goods by Sophie Kinsella as the data source. The theory of signification by Rolland Barthes is the analytical tool of this research used to determine the function of the elements in the object of research. The results of the study are both covers have their own significations functions; the first edition (1) cover function emphasizes on promoting the novel by using signification content of the novel. Cover (2) emphasizes promotion function using the author popularity and best-selling author status and promoting the novel by using signification content of the novel. Cover three (3) the latest edition function emphasizes on ‘advertises’ the novel by using the author popularity and best-selling author status

Development of a performance-based test method for quantification of cracking potential in asphalt pavement materials

    Get PDF
With the increasing use of recycled materials in the construction of roadways, it is more critical now than ever to understand the impact that these materials have on pavement behavior and performance. Since recycled materials tend to, in general, behave in a more brittle fashion, a primary area of concern is increased cracking potential. There is a need for a performance-based approach to quantifying the cracking potential of asphalt mixtures, specifically those with high amounts of recycled content. This study aimed to first, characterize the impact of using various proportions of recycled materials in asphalt mixtures, and second, develop a testing protocol to quantify their cracking potential in a way that is scientifically meaningful and economically practical, while ensuring correlation to independent testing. A characterization of varying amounts of recycled content displayed a general trend of increased susceptibility to cracking as recycled content increased. It was determined that low-temperature testing was not capable of sufficiently distinguishing between these various materials. A practical test method, the Illinois Flexibility Index Test (I-FIT), was developed, and found to appropriately distinguish between variations in mix design and characteristics. The I-FIT method is a modification of the semicircle bending beam (SCB) test; the modification includes the testing temperature, the loading rate, and the analysis of test data to calculate a developed parameter titled the Flexibility Index
