Solar sustained plasma/absorber conceptual design
A space power system concept was evaluated which uses concentrated solar energy to heat a working fluid to temperatures as high as 4000 K. The high temperature working fluid could be used for efficient electric power production in advanced thermal or magnetohydrodynamic conversion cycles. Energy absorber configurations utilizing particles or cesium vapor absorber material were investigaed. Results of detailed radiant heat transfer calculations indicated approximately 86 percent of the incident solar energy could be absorbed within a 12-cm-dia flowing stream of gas borne carbon particles. Calculated total energy absorption in the cesium vapor seeded absorber configuration ranged from 34 percent to 64 percent of the incident solar energy. Solar flux concentration ratios of between approximately 3000 and 10,000 will be required to sustain absorber temperatures in the range from 3000 K to 4000 K
New, nearby bright southern ultracool dwarfs
We report the discovery of twenty-one hitherto unknown bright southern
ultracool dwarfs with spectral types in the range M7 to L5.5, together with new
observations of a further three late M dwarfs previously confirmed. Three more
objects are already identified in the literature as high proper motion stars;we
derive their spectral types for the first time. All objects were selected from
the 2MASS All Sky and SuperCOSMOS point source databases on the basis of their
optical/near-infrared colours, -band magnitudes and proper motions. Low
resolution (R 1000) spectroscopy with the ESO/NTT SOFI spectrograph
has confirmed the ultracool nature of 24 targets, out of a total of 25
candidates observed. Spectral types are derived by direct comparison with
template objects and compared to results from HO and FeH indices. We also
report the discovery of one binary, as revealed by SOFI acquisition imaging;
spectra were taken for both components. The spectral types of the two
components are L2 and L4 and the distance 19 pc. Spectroscopic distances
and transverse velocities are derived for the sample. Two L5 objects lie
only 10 pc distant. Such nearby objects are excellent targets for
further study to derive their parallaxes and to search for fainter, later
companions with AO and/or methane imaging.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted to MNRA
New brown dwarfs in Upper Sco using UKIDSS Galactic Cluster Survey science verification data
We present first results from a deep (J = 18.7), wide-field (6.5 square degrees) infrared (ZYJHK) survey in the Upper Sco association conducted within the science verification phase of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey Galactic Cluster Survey (GCS). Cluster members define a sequence well separated from field stars in the (Z-J,Z) colour-magnitude diagram. We have selected a total of 164 candidates with J = 10.5-18.7 mag from the (Z-J,Z) and (Y-J,Y) diagrams. We further investigated the location of those candidates in the other colour-magnitude and colour-colour diagrams to weed out contaminants. The cross-correlation of the GCS catalogue with the 2MASS database confirms the membership of 116 photometric candidates down to 20 Jupiter masses as they lie within a 2 sigma circle centred on the association mean motion. The final list of cluster members contains 129 sources with masses between 0.3 and 0.007 Msun. We extracted a dozen new low-mass brown dwarfs below 20 Mjup, the limit of previous surveys in the region. Finally, we have derived the mass function in Upper Sco over the 0.3-0.01 Msun mass range, best fit by a single segment with a slope of index alpha = 0.6+/-0.1, in agreement with previous determination in open clusters
Role of the rumen in copper and thiomolybdate absorption
The rumen is the site of significant interactions between Cu, S and Mo. It also shows reactions between Cu, S and Fe. The interaction between Mo and S results in the formation of thiomolybdates, which in the absence of adequate quantities of rumen Cu are absorbed into the animal and bind to Cu in biological compounds. This is the cause of thiomolybdate toxicity, often misleadingly called Cu deficiency. The effects of thiomolybdates being absorbed into the animal are considered, especially how thiomolybdates bind to Cu-containing compounds such as enzymes, decreasing their activity without removing the active Cu component. The sources of Cu, Mo, Fe and S are examined, including the impacts of water and soil on the animal's intake. Within the present review we have been able to provide evidence that: all classes of thiomolybdates are formed in the rumen; in the absence of available Cu all thiomolybdates can be absorbed into the animal rapidly though the rumen wall or via the small intestine; thiomolybdates bind to Cu in biological compounds and are able to cause problems; effects of thiomolybdate are reversible in vivo and in vitro on cessation of thiomolybdate challenge; the tetra-thiomolybdate form is the most potent Cu binder with decreased potency with decreasing S in the compound. Fe will exacerbate a thiomolybdate problem but will not directly cause it
Biases in the polarization position angles in the NVSS point source catalogue
We have examined the statistics of the polarization position angles
determined for point sources in the NRAO-VLA sky survey (NVSS) and find that
there is a statistically significant bias toward angles which are multiples of
45 degrees. The formal probability that the polarization angles are drawn from
a uniform distribution is exponentially small. When the sample of those NVSS
sources with polarizations detected with a signal to noise 3 is split
either around the median polarized flux density or the median fractional
polarization, the effect appears to be stronger for the more highly polarized
sources. Regions containing strong sources and regions at low galactic
latitudes are not responsible for the non-uniform distribution of position
angles. We identify CLEAN bias as the probable cause of the dominant effect,
coupled with small multiplicative and additive offsets on each of the Stokes
parameters. Our findings have implications for the extraction of science, such
as information concerning galactic magnetic fields, from large scale
polarization surveys
Southern Infrared Proper Motion Survey I: Discovery of New High Proper Motion Stars From First Full Hemisphere Scan
We present the first results from the Southern Infrared Proper Motion Survey.
Using 2 Micron All Sky Survey data along with that of the SuperCOSMOS sky
survey we have been able to produce the first widefield infrared proper motion
survey. Having targeted the survey to identify nearby M, L and T dwarfs we have
discovered 72 such new objects with proper motions greater than 0.5''/yr with
10 of these having proper motions in excess of 1''/yr. The most interesting of
these objects is SIPS1259-4336 a late M dwarf. We have calculated a
trigonometric parallax for this object of milliarcseconds
yielding a distance of pc. We have also discovered a common proper
motion triple system and an object with a common proper motion with LHS 128.
The survey completeness is limited by the small epoch differences between many
2MASS and UKI observations. Hence we only recover 22% of Luyten objects with
favourable photometry. However the Luyten study is itself unquantifiably
incomplete. We discuss the prospect of enhancing the survey volume by reducing

Aboriginal children and family connections to primary health care whilst homeless and in high housing mobility: observations from a Nurse Practitioner-led service
Aim:
This article documents the impact of a Nurse Practitioner-led primary health service for disadvantaged children living in housing instability or homelessness. It identifies that First Nations children miss out on essential primary care, particularly immunisation, but have less severe health conditions than non-First Nations children living in housing insecurity.
Background:
Health services for homeless populations focus on the 11% of rough sleepers, little is done for the 22% of children in Australia living in housing instability; many of whom are from First Nations families. Little is known of the health status of these children or their connections to appropriate primary health care.
Methods:
This research implemented an innovative model of extended health care delivery, embedding a Nurse Practitioner in a homeless service to work with families providing health assessments and referrals, using clinically validated assessment tools. This article reports on proof of concept findings on the service that measured immunisation rates, developmental, medical, dental and mental health needs of children, particularly First Nations children, using a three-point severity level scale with Level 3 being the most severe and in need of immediate referral to a specialist medical service.
Findings:
Forty-three children were referred by the service to the Nurse Practitioner over a 6-month period, with nine identifying as First Nations children. Differences in severity levels between First Nations/non-First Nations children were Level 1, First Nations/non-First Nations 0/15%; Level 2, 10/17%; and Level 3, 45/29%. Forty-five percent of First Nations children had no health problems, as compared to 29% on non-First Nations children. Immunisation rates were low for both cohorts. No First Nations child was immunised and only 9% of the non-First Nations children. While numbers for both cohorts are too low for valid statistical analysis, the lower levels of severity for First Nations children suggest stronger extended family support and the positive impact of cultural norms of reciprocity
Comparing league formats with respect to match importance in Belgian football
Recently, most clubs in the highest Belgian football division have become convinced that the format of their league should be changed. Moreover, the TV station that broadcasts the league is pleading for a more attractive competition. However, the clubs have not been able to agree on a new league format, mainly because they have conflicting interests. In this paper, we compare the current league format, and three other formats that have been considered by the Royal Belgian Football Association. We simulate the course of each of these league formats, based on historical match results. We assume that the attractiveness of a format is determined by the importance of its games; our importance measure for a game is based on the number of teams for which this game can be decisive to reach a given goal. Furthermore, we provide an overview of how each league format aligns with the expectations and interests of each type of club
