    Unsung heroes: Constituency election agents in British general elections

    Despite their central role in the electoral process, constituency agents have been largely overlooked by political scientists and this article seeks to rectify the omission. It sketches the origins and development of the role of agent from the late 19th century and suggests that a serious rethink of the role took place in the 1990s. Survey-based evidence about the social characteristics of agents is presented confirming that they are largely middle-aged, middle-class, well-educated men. They are also becoming more experienced, offer realistic assessments of the impact of constituency campaigning and, arguably, many take a long-term view of how their party's support can be maximised

We add to contemporary debate on the BAME acronym (Black, Asian and minority ethnic) by providing a critical examination of the perceptions and attitudes towards it in the UK. Drawing on in-depth interviews with women from these communities who were working in the hyper-masculinised and white-dominated sporting industry, we privilege the voices of those who traditionally have been omitted. Adopting a Critical Race Theory approach and an intersectional lens three overarching themes were identified: rejection and indifference towards the BAME acronym; filling in the form – inadequacies of the system; and, making up the quota – perpetuating (work-related) insecurity(ies). The findings provide analytical insight into institutional language and highlight the potential for the BAME acronym to cause distress and alienation while preserving the concept of Whiteness.Peer reviewe

    The population of X-ray supernova remnants in the Large Magellanic Cloud

    We present a comprehensive X-ray study of the population of supernova remnants (SNRs) in the LMC. Using primarily XMM-Newton, we conduct a systematic spectral analysis of LMC SNRs to gain new insights on their evolution and the interplay with their host galaxy. We combined all the archival XMM observations of the LMC with those of our Very Large Programme survey. We produced X-ray images and spectra of 51 SNRs, out of a list of 59. Using a careful modelling of the background, we consistently analysed all the X-ray spectra and measure temperatures, luminosities, and chemical compositions. We investigated the spatial distribution of SNRs in the LMC and the connection with their environment, characterised by various SFHs. We tentatively typed all LMC SNRs to constrain the ratio of core-collapse to type Ia SN rates in the LMC. We compared the X-ray-derived column densities to HI maps to probe the three-dimensional structure of the LMC. This work provides the first homogeneous catalogue of X-ray spectral properties of LMC SNRs. It offers a complete census of LMC SNRs exhibiting Fe K lines (13% of the sample), or revealing contribution from hot SN ejecta (39%). Abundances in the LMC ISM are found to be 0.2-0.5 solar, with a lower [α\alpha/Fe] than in the Milky Way. The ratio of CC/type Ia SN in the LMC is NCC/NIa=1.35(−0.24+0.11)N_{\mathrm{CC}}/N_{\mathrm{Ia}} = 1.35(_{-0.24}^{+0.11}), lower than in local SN surveys and galaxy clusters. Comparison of X-ray luminosity functions of SNRs in Local Group galaxies reveals an intriguing excess of bright objects in the LMC. We confirm that 30 Doradus and the LMC Bar are offset from the main disc of the LMC, to the far and near sides, respectively.     Reduction of low- and high-grade cervical abnormalities associated with high uptake of the HPV bivalent vaccine in Scotland

    In Scotland, a national HPV immunisation programme began in 2008 for 12-13 year olds, with a catch-up campaign from 2008-2011 for those under the age of 18. To monitor the impact of HPV immunisation on cervical disease at the population level, a programme of national surveillance was established.  We analysed colposcopy data from a cohort of women born between 1988-1992 who entered the Scottish Cervical Screening Programme (SCSP) and were aged 20-21 in 2008-2012.  By linking datasets from the SCSP and colposcopy services, we observed a significant reduction in diagnoses of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 1 (CIN 1) (RR 0.71, 95% CI 0.58 to 0.87, p=0.0008), CIN 2 (RR 0.5, 95% CI 0.4, 0.63, p<0.0001) and CIN 3 (RR 0.45, 95% CI 0.35 to 0.58, p< 0.0001) for women who received 3 doses of vaccine compared with unvaccinated women.  To our knowledge, this is one of the first studies to show a reduction of low and high grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia associated with high uptake of the HPV bivalent vaccine at the population level. These data are very encouraging for countries that have achieved high HPV vaccine uptake

    Distinguishing environmental effects on binary black hole gravitational waveforms

    Future gravitational wave interferometers such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, Taiji, DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory and TianQin will enable precision studies of the environment surrounding black holes. These detectors will probe the millihertz frequency range, as yet unexplored by current gravitational wave detectors. Furthermore, sources will remain in band for durations of up to years, meaning that the inspiral phase of the gravitational wave signal, which can be affected by the environment, will be observable. In this paper, we study intermediate and extreme mass ratio binary black hole inspirals, and consider three possible environments surrounding the primary black hole: accretion disks, dark matter spikes and clouds of ultra-light scalar fields, also known as gravitational atoms. We present a Bayesian analysis of the detectability and measurability of these three environments. Focusing for concreteness on the case of a detection with LISA, we show that the characteristic imprint they leave on the gravitational waveform would allow us to identify the environment that generated the signal and to accurately reconstruct its model parameters.</p

    Pengujian usability website Time Excelindo menggunakan System Usability Scale (SUS) merupakan penelitian aksi yang bertujuan untuk mengukur tingkat kebergunaan (usability) dari website Time Excelindo.  Berdasarkan hasil pengujian yang dilakukan akan dianalisa lebih jauh lagi untuk menghasilkan rekomendasi perbaikan website untuk meningkatkan usability. Pengujian dilakukan dengan menggunakan kuesioner SUS yang berisi 10 pernyataan dan menggunakan skala Likert untuk jawabannya. Pengujian dilakukan 2 tahap, pengujian pertama dengan menggunakan kuesioner SUS untuk mengukur tingkat usability website. Dari hasil pengujian pertama kemudian dianalisa untuk menghasilkan rekomendasi perbaikan. Pengujian kedua menggunakan kuesioner SUS yang telah diberikan perlakuan dengan menambahkan hasil rekomendasi pada pernyataan yang ada. Kesimpulan yang diperoleh dari penelitian ini adalah website Time Excelindo memiliki usability yang masih dapat diterima. Namun dengan diberikan rekomendasi perbaikan, mampu meningkatkan usability website lebih baik lagi

    Effect of Pre-and Post-weaning Nutrition and Management on Performance of Weaned Pigs to circa 35 kg.

    End of Project ReportThe objective of this project was to examine the factors affecting performance (growth rate, appetite, feed conversion efficiency) of pigs in the stage from weaning to 35 kg liveweight. The study involved three stages, creep feeding during the suckling period, management during the first weaner stage (c. 4 weeks from weaning or 6 kg to 15 kg liveweight) and management during the second weaner stage (c. 15 kg to 35 kg liveweight. Creep feed intake before weaning was low c. 2.5 to 3.0 kg per litter but where it was consumed the response in terms of feed conversion efficiency was good with litter weight increasing in weight by about 1.1 kg for each 1 kg creep consumed. Milk replacer in liquid form was very readily consumed but its preparation and feeding is very laborious. Weaning weight was poorly related to post weaning performance and weaning age seemed to be more critical which is probably a reflection of the greater maturity of older animals. In the first weaner stage, feeding of cooked cereal containing diets was found to have little benefit in pig performance. Acidification of feeds is likely to have only a minor influence on pig performance. An experiment on choice feeding of starter and link feeds did not confirm that smaller pigs require a higher quality diet and, in a choice situation will eat a greater proportion of the more nutrient dense diet. In the second weaner stage, comparison of three commercial weaner feeds with a cereal based control diet showed good performance on all four diets. Pigs fed a high lysine weaner diet grew better in the weaner stage but by slaughter those pigs fed the low lysine weaner diet, after all pigs were fed a common finisher diet, had overtaken them. The high lysine group did, however, have leaner carcasses. Residual effects of early nutrition need to be investigated in more detail including the effect of pregnancy feeding on prenatal development and the relationship between prenatal growth and postnatal growth, in particular development of muscle.European Union Structural Funds (EAGGF

    Low-lying continuum structures in B8 and Li8 in a microscopic model

    We search for low-lying resonances in the B8 and Li8 nuclei using a microscopic cluster model and a variational scattering method, which is analytically continued to complex energies. After fine-tuning the nucleon-nucleon interaction to get the known 1+ state of B8 at the right energy, we reproduce the known spectra of the studied nuclei. In addition, our model predicts a 1+ state at 1.3 MeV in B8, relative to the Be7+p threshold, whose corresponding pair is situated right at the Li7+n threshold in Li8. Lacking any experimental evidence for the existence of such states, it is presently uncertain whether these structures really exist or they are spurious resonances in our model. We demonstrate that the predicted state in B8, if it exists, would have important consequences for the understanding of the astrophysically important Be7(p,gamma)B8 reaction.Comment: 6 pages with 1 figure.     Status of the Standard Solar Model Prediction of Solar Neutrino Fluxes

    The Standard Solar Model (BP04) predicts a total 8B neutrino flux that is 17.2% larger than measured in the salt phase of the SNO detector (and if it were significant it will indicate oscillation to sterile neutrinos). Hence it is important to examine in details uncertainties (and values) of inputs to the SSM. Currently, the largest fractional uncertainty is due to the new evaluation of the surface composition of the sun. We examine the nuclear input on the formation of solar 8B [S17(0)] and demonstrate that it is still quite uncertain due to ill known slope of the measured astrophysical cross section factor and thus ill defined extrapolation to zero energy. This yields an additional reasonably estimated uncertainty due to extrapolation of +0.0 -3.0 eV-b (+0% -14%). Since a large discrepancy exists among measured as well as among predicted slopes, the value of S17(0) is dependent on the choice of data and theory used to extrapolate S17(0). This situation must be alleviated by new measurement(s). The "world average" is driven by the Seattle result due to the very small quoted uncertainty, which we however demonstrate it to be an over-estimated accuracy.
