Automatic Speech Recognition in Air Traffic Control: a Human Factors Perspective

    Get PDF
The introduction of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) technology into the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system has the potential to improve overall safety and efficiency. However, because ASR technology is inherently a part of the man-machine interface between the user and the system, the human factors issues involved must be addressed. Here, some of the human factors problems are identified and related methods of investigation are presented. Research at M.I.T.'s Flight Transportation Laboratory is being conducted from a human factors perspective, focusing on intelligent parser design, presentation of feedback, error correction strategy design, and optimal choice of input modalities

State of structural typing support in Scala 3.3.0

Scala's type system is primarily based on nominal typing. Scala 3 introduces a special type, Selectable, which provides an infrastructure for structural typing. Karlsson and Haller proposed improvements to Selectable to support extensible records. In this paper, we review several Scala 3 projects that involve structural typing. We find that their implementation or usability would benefit from the extensible records proposal from Karlsson and Haller. We investigate the remaining common challenges when working with structural types. In particular, we identify that a dedicated syntax for both record types and record literals would be the most beneficial addition to the language

Prosecuting Alleged Terrorists by Military Commission: A Prudent Option

    Get PDF
President Obama has announced that the detention facility at Guantánamo Bay will be closed by January 22, 2010. He has also said that at least some of the detainees facing criminal prosecution will be tried in military commissions. The system of military commissions established by President Bush after the 9/11 attacks, as well as the one which Congress enacted in 2006 following the Supreme Court’s Hamdan decision, were widely criticized as being unproductive and not meeting international legal standards. The Congress has, very recently, revised the rules and procedures for military commissions to make them fair, effective and much more like those used for courts-martial. This article compares and contrasts trials in revised military commissions with trials in federal district courts. It concludes that a combination of both forums would best serve the President, and that military commissions are still a prudent option for prosecuting some detainees where there are security and admissibility of evidence concerns
