A CCD Study of High Latitude Galactic Structure: Testing the Model Parameters
We interpret published CCD UBVI data to deduce the stellar density
distribution and metallicity distribution function in the region from 2-8 kpc
from the Galactic Plane, and compare our results to several star count models.
A feature of extant star count models is degeneracy between the adopted scale
heights of the thin and thick disks, and their local normalisation. We
illustrate the utility of this small data set, and future larger sets (e.g.
SDSS), by explicitly considering consistency between the derived density laws,
and the implied solar neighbourhood luminosity function. Our data set, from
Hall et al.(1996) (l=52, b=-39) contains 566 stars, selected to be consistent
with stellar loci in colour-colour diagrams. Our analysis supports the
parameterisation of the recent SDSS galaxy model of Chen et al.(2001), except
in preferring the stellar halo axis ratio to be 0.84. Photometric
metal-abundances have been derived for 329 stars using a new calibration. The
vertical distance-dependent metallicity distribution function, if parameterised
by a single mean value, can be described by a metallicity gradient -0.2 dex/kpc for the inner halo.
The data are however better described as the sum of three discrete distribution
functions, each of which has a small or zero internal gradient. The changing
mix of thin disk, thick disk and halo populations with distance from the plane

Variations in concerns reported on the Patient Concerns Inventory (PCI) in head and neck cancer patients from different health settings across the world
Background: The aim was to collate and contrast patient concerns from a range of different head and neck cancer follow-up clinics around the world. Also, we sought to explore the relationship, if any, between responses to the patient concerns inventory (PCI) and overall quality of life (QOL). Methods: Nineteen units participated with intention of including 100 patients per site as close to a consecutive series as possible in order to minimize selection bias. Results: There were 2136 patients with a median total number of PCI items selected of 5 (2-10). “Fear of the cancer returning” (39%) and “dry mouth” (37%) were most common. Twenty-five percent (524) reported less than good QOL. Conclusion: There was considerable variation between units in the number of items selected and in overall QOL, even after allowing for case-mix variables. There was a strong progressive association between the number of PCI items and QOL

Challenging the assumptions of social entrepreneurship education and repositioning it for the future: wonders of cultural, social, symbolic and economic capitals
Purpose:
Social entrepreneurship education (SEE) is gaining increasing attention globally. This paper aims to focus on how SEE may be better understood and reconfigured from a Bourdieusian capital perspective with an emphasis on the process of mobilising and transforming social entrepreneurs’ cultural, social, economic and symbolic resources.
Design/methodology/approach:
Drawing on qualitative research with a sample of social entrepreneurship educators and mentors, the authors generate insights into the significance of challenging assumptions and establishing values and principles and hence that of developing a range of capitals (using the Bourdieusian notion of capital) for SEE.
Findings:
The findings highlight the significance of developing a range of capitals and their transformative power for SEE. In this way, learners can develop dispositions for certain forms of capitals over others and transform them to each other in becoming reflexive social agents.
Originality/value:
The authors respond to the calls for critical thinking in entrepreneurship education and contribute to the field by developing a reflexive approach to SEE. The authors also make recommendations to educators, who are tasked with implementing such an approach in pursuit of raising the next generations of social entrepreneurs.Higher Education Entrepreneurship Group of SEEDA (South East England Development Agency)
TEAD-YAP Interaction Inhibitors and MDM2 Binders from DNA-Encoded Indole-Focused Ugi Peptidomimetics
DNA-encoded combinatorial synthesis provides efficient and dense coverage of chemical space around privileged molecular structures. The indole side chain of tryptophan plays a prominent role in key, or “hot spot”, regions of protein–protein interactions. A DNA-encoded combinatorial peptoid library was designed based on the Ugi four-component reaction by employing tryptophan-mimetic indole side chains to probe the surface of target proteins. Several peptoids were synthesized on a chemically stable hexathymidine adapter oligonucleotide “hexT”, encoded by DNA sequences, and substituted by azide-alkyne cycloaddition to yield a library of 8112 molecules. Selection experiments for the tumor-relevant proteins MDM2 and TEAD4 yielded MDM2 binders and a novel class of TEAD-YAP interaction inhibitors that perturbed the expression of a gene under the control of these Hippo pathway effectors
Proposing to use artificial neural Networks for NoSQL attack detection
[EN] Relationships databases have enjoyed a certain boom in software
worlds until now. These days, with the rise of modern applications, unstructured
data production, traditional databases do not completely meet the needs of all
systems. Regarding these issues, NOSQL databases have been developed and
are a good alternative. But security aspects stay behind. Injection attacks are the
most serious class of web attacks that are not taken seriously in NoSQL.
This paper presents a Neural Network model approach for NoSQL injection.
This method attempts to use the best and most effective features to identify an
injection. The features used are divided into two categories, the first one based
on the content of the request, and the second one independent of the request
meta parameters. In order to detect attack payloads features, we work on
character level analysis to obtain malicious rate of user inputs. The results
demonstrate that our model has detected more attack payloads compare with
models that work black list approach in keyword level

The distributed p-median problem in computer networks
Many distributed services in computer networks rely on a set of active facilities that are selected among
a potentially large number of candidates. The active facilities then contribute and cooperate to deliver a
specific service to the users of the distributed system. In this scenario graph partitioning or clustering is
often adopted to determine the most efficient locations of the facilities. The identification of the optimal
set of facility locations is known as the p-median problem in networks, is NP-hard and is typically solved
by using heuristic methods. The goal is to select p locations among all candidate network nodes such that
some cost function is minimised. A typical example of such a function is the overall communication cost
to deliver the service to the users of the distributed system. Locating facilities in near-optimal locations
has been extensively studied for different application domains. Most of these studies have investigated
sequential algorithms and centralised approaches. However, centralised approaches are practically infeasible
in large-scale and dynamic networks, where the problem is inherently distributed or because of the large
communication overhead and memory requirements for gathering complete information about the network
topology and the users. In this work distributed approaches to the p-median problem are investigated.
Two solutions are proposed for addressing the facility locations problem in a fully distributed environment.
Two different iterative heuristic approaches are applied to gradually improve a random initial solution
and to converge to a final solution with a local minimum of the overall cost. While the first approach
adopts a fine granularity by identifying a single change to improve the solution at each iteration, the second
approach applies changes to every component of the solution at each iteration. An experimental comparative
analysis based on simulations has shown that the approach with a finer granularity is able to deliver a better
optimisation of the overall cost with longer convergence time. Both approaches have excellent scalability
and provide an effective tool to optimise the facility locations from within the network. No prior knowledge
of the system is required, no data needs to be gathered in a centralised server and the same process is used
to identify and to deploy the facility locations solution in the network since the process is fully decentralised
Prediction of the survival and functional ability of severe stroke patients after ICU therapeutic intervention
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This study evaluated the benefits and impact of ICU therapeutic interventions on the survival and functional ability of severe cerebrovascular accident (CVA) patients.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Sixty-two ICU patients suffering from severe ischemic/haemorrhagic stroke were evaluated for CVA severity using APACHE II and the Glasgow coma scale (GCS). Survival was determined using Kaplan-Meier survival tables and survival prediction factors were determined by Cox multivariate analysis. Functional ability was assessed using the stroke impact scale (SIS-16) and Karnofsky score. Risk factors, life support techniques and neurosurgical interventions were recorded. One year post-CVA dependency was investigated using multivariate analysis based on linear regression.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The study cohort constituted 6% of all CVA (37.8% haemorrhagic/62.2% ischemic) admissions. Patient mean(SD) age was 65.8(12.3) years with a 1:1 male: female ratio. During the study period 16 patients had died within the ICU and seven in the year following hospital release.</p> <p>The mean(SD) APACHE II score at hospital admission was 14.9(6.0) and ICU mean duration of stay was 11.2(15.4) days. Mechanical ventilation was required in 37.1% of cases. Risk ratios were; GCS at admission 0.8(0.14), (p = 0.024), APACHE II 1.11(0.11), (p = 0.05) and duration of mechanical ventilation 1.07(0.07), (p = 0.046). Linear coefficients were: type of CVA – haemorrhagic versus ischemic: -18.95(4.58) (p = 0.007), GCS at hospital admission: -6.83(1.08), (p = 0.001), and duration of hospital stay -0.38(0.14), (p = 0.40).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>To ensure a better prognosis CVA patients require ICU therapeutic interventions. However, as we have shown, where tests can determine the worst affected patients with a poor vital and functional outcome should treatment be withheld?</p
Biological decolorization of xanthene dyes by anaerobic granular biomass
Biodegradation of a xanthene dyes was investigated for the first time using anaerobic granular sludge. On a first screening, biomass was able to decolorize, at different extents, six azo dye solutions: acid orange 7, direct black 19, direct blue 71, mordant yellow 10, reactive red 2 and reactive red 120 and two xanthene dyes—Erythrosine B and Eosin Y. Biomass concentration, type of electron donor, induction of biomass with dye and mediation with activated carbon (AC) were variables studied for Erythrosine B (Ery) as model dye. Maximum color removal efficiency was achieved with 4.71 g VSS L−1, while the process rates were independent of the biomass concentration above 1.89 g VSS L−1. No considerable effects were observed when different substrates were used as electron donors (VFA, glucose or lactose). Addition of Ery in the incubation period of biomass led to a fivefold increase of the decolorization rate. The rate of Ery decolorization almost duplicated in the presence of commercial AC (0.1 g L−1 AC0). Using different modified AC samples (from the treatment of AC0), a threefold higher rate was obtained with the most basic one, \textAC\textH2ACH2, as compared with non-mediated reaction. Higher rates were obtained at pH 6.0. Chemical reduction using Na2S confirmed the recalcitrant nature of this dye.
