Ovarian cancer is a leading cause of gynecological cancer-related death in Canadian women. Ovarian cancer is managed through surgical cytoreduction and carboplatin-based chemotherapy. Unfortunately, most patients often relapse or have reduced responses to initial chemotherapy. The mechanisms behind carboplatin resistance are poorly understood. In pilot studies, our group has observed vascular proliferation in patient samples following carboplatin treatment. The effectiveness of modulating neovascularization in combination with carboplatin has also been demonstrated in two large Phase 3 trials. In this study, I explore the underlying mechanisms of chemotherapy-induced vascular proliferation and potentially, tumour cell survival. I hypothesize that carboplatin induces angiogenic factors in ovarian cancer cells leading to microvascular endothelial cell survival. To test my hypothesis, I screened for a variety of angiogenic factors in ovarian cancer cells and vascular endothelial cells following exposure to carboplatin. My results show that a number of angiogenic genes are upregulated in response to carboplatin exposure, including placental growth factor (PGF). Preclinical studies have shown that inhibition of PGF prevents tumour growth and metastasis. Therefore, I tested the effect of PGF and condition media prepared from ovarian cancer cells following carboplatin challenge on endothelial cell survival. My results show that PGF and ovarian cancer condition media facilitates endothelial cell survival. I also found that carboplatin may induce PGF expression in ovarian cancer cells through β-catenin activation. Findings from this study may help better understand the effects of carboplatin exposure on ovarian cancer. Furthermore, the results may provide additional targets to increase carboplatin sensitivity in ovarian cancer patients

Analyzing the Relationship between Economic Prosperity, Law and Democracy

In line with economic prosperity and its spread to the society, it is essential that the economy complement each other with law and democracy. In this study, the development levels of countries and the relationship between law and/or democracy will be examined. After the Eview analysis, it was observed that the democracy and geography indexes were not enough alone, and a more comprehensive model was formed by adding some geographic, religious, cultural and dummy variables reflecting the history of countries. At the end of modelling, it is seen that geographic features and natural resources are extremely important for prosperity. Moreover, the fact that countries have historical/corporate identity does not yield any meaningful results in terms of human development Research paper Keywords: Economic Prosperity; Law; Democracy; Human Development Index; World Justice Index Reference to this paper should be made as follows: Kahramanoğlu, A., & Büyüksarıkulak, A. Economic growth has been one of the most important subjects of economics in almost every period. It can be said that first, economic growth, then the increment of the prosperity levels of countries is aimed with economic policies. For measuring welfare; In addition to income method, new parameters such as education, health, environment and management were included in the calculation The objective of this study is to evaluate The Legatum Prosperity Index results, prepared by The Legatum Institute as an alternative approach to measure prosperity, between 2007-2017 with regards to Turkey and to associate these with economic growth. In the creation of the index, economic quality, business environment, health, education, security, natural environment, management, personal liberties, social capital criteria are used. In the last decade, Turkey’s economy experienced a recession only in 2009 but grew in other years. When we examine the ranking on the Prosperity Index, it is observed that it has generally a horizontal course. This situation indicates that economic growth has not contributed to prosperity increase enough in Turkey. It can be interpreted as Turkey’s prosperity level will not progress significantly in the coming years, considering the constant retrogressing in rankings especially in the last three years. Robust capacity expansion and routing in networks

Cataloged from PDF version of article. In this thesis, we consider a robust capacity expansion-routing problem with uncertain demand. Given a network with source and demand nodes and a capacity budget, the capacity expansion problem is related to the determination of the arcs on which additional capacity will be installed in order to minimize the overall routing cost while satisfying the demand of the nodes. We make use of the Robust Counterpart (RC) approach in the literature in order to make capacity installation and routing decisions. RC approach is important since it does not allow any constraint violation for any realization of the uncertainty and such approaches are often necessary in engineering applications in real life. We apply the classical RC formulation to our problem that results in a simple one-stage model. The two-stage version of the RC formulation, namely the Adjustable Robust Counterpart (ARC), is also applicable to our problem. The formulation of the ARC is given but since it is not computationally tractable, an approximation to ARC developed recently, namely Affinely Adjustable Robust Counterpart (AARC) formulation, is applied to our problem and solved. The efficiencies of the RC formulation and AARC formulation are tested via two different sets of numerical studies in the experimental part. The main model that allows capacity installation in continuous amounts as well as two extensions that make use of the modular capacity approach are used in the experimental study. The computational experiments illustrate that AARC approach provides robust solutions at a much cheaper cost in terms of objective function value when compared to RC approach. In addition the loss of optimality due to application of AARC formulation is minor.Kahramanoğlu, İbrahim EvrenM.S

    Get PDF
The objective of this study was to investigate damage rate and impact of Bactrocera oleae on olive oil quality on the ‘Cyprus Local’ and ‘Gemlik’ cultivars in Northern Cyprus. This study included 11 olive groves which were located in two different districts. A total of 11 olive groves from two separate cities (Güzelyurt and Girne) were selected during the maturity time where cvs, ‘Cyprus Local’ and ‘Gemlik’ are grown intensively. Two hundred and fifty fruits (25 fruits/10 trees) were randomly selected from each orchard and the damaged fruits were counted. These data were compared with the environmental conditions to determine relationships among the damage rates and environmental conditions. The results showed that the damage rate of olive fruit fly had a moderate correlation with the temperature, while the temperatures above 20°C were found to provoke the highest damage rate on both cultivars. Moreover, the results showed that cv. ‘Cyprus Local’ is more sensitive to olive fruit fly damage, especially at higher temperatures. An important result of the current work is that an increase in the damage rate raises the acidity ratio of the fruits and reduces the fruit quality
