    Robust beamforming with magnitude response constraints using iterative second-order cone programming

    The problem of robust beamforming for antenna arrays with arbitrary geometry and magnitude response constraints is one of considerable importance. Due to the presence of the non-convex magnitude response constraints, conventional convex optimization techniques cannot be applied directly. A new approach based on iteratively linearizing the non-convex constraints is then proposed to reformulate the non-convex problem to a series of convex subproblems, each of which can be optimally solved using second-order cone programming (SOCP). Moreover, in order to obtain a more robust beamformer against array imperfections, the proposed method is further extended by optimizing its worst-case performance using again SOCP. Different from some conventional methods which are restricted to linear arrays, the proposed method is applicable to arbitrary array geometries since the weight vector, rather than its autocorrelation sequence, is used as the variable. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed method is comparable to the optimal solution previously proposed for uniform linear arrays, and it also gives satisfactory results under different array specifications and geometries tested. © 2006 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    Frequency invariant uniform concentric circular arrays with directional elements

    A new approach for designing frequency invariant (FI) uniform concentric circular arrays (UCCAs) with directional elements is proposed, and their applications to direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation and adaptive beamforming are studied. By treating the sensors along the radial direction of the UCCA as linear subarrays and using appropriately designed beamformers, each subarray is transformed to a virtual element with appropriate directivity. Consequently, the whole UCCA can be viewed as a virtual uniform circular array (UCA) with desired element directivity for broadband processing. By extending the approach for designing FI-UCAs, the frequency dependency of the phase modes of the virtual UCA is compensated to facilitate broadband DOA and adaptive beamforming. Both the linear array beamformers (LABFs) and compensation filters can be designed separately using second- order cone programming (SOCP). Moreover, a new method to tackle the possible noise amplification problem in such large arrays by imposing additional norm constraints on the design of the compensation filters is proposed. The advantages of this decoupled approach are 1) the complicated design problem of large UCCAs can be decoupled into simpler problems of designing the LABFs and compensation filters, and 2) directional elements, which are frequently encountered, can be treated readily under the proposed framework. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and improvement of the proposed methods in DOA estimation, adaptive beamforming, and elevation control over the conventional FI-UCCA design method.published_or_final_versio

A new method for robust beamforming is proposed by minimizing the array output power while controlling the array mainlobe response. Due to the presence of the non-convex response constraints, a new approach based on iteratively linearizing the non-convex constraints is proposed to reformulate the non-convex problem to a series of second-order cone programming (SOCP) subproblems, each of which can be optimally solved by well-established convex optimization techniques.     This paper proposes a new visual object tracking algorithm using a novel Bayesian Kalman filter (BKF) with simplified Gaussian mixture (BKF-SGM). The new BKF-SGM employs a GM representation of the state and noise densities and a novel direct density simplifying algorithm for avoiding the exponential complexity growth of conventional KFs using GM. Together with an improved mean shift (MS) algorithm, a new BKF-SGM with improved MS (BKF-SGM-IMS) algorithm with more robust tracking performance is also proposed. Experimental results show that our method can successfully handle complex scenarios with good performance and low arithmetic complexity. © IEEEpublished_or_final_versio

    Steering vector estimation and beamforming under uncertainties

    In this paper, we propose a new method for estimating the steering vector under uncertainties, which is utilized for improving the robustness of beamforming. We show that the desired steering vector can be estimated in closed form from a convex optimization problem by making use of the subspace principle. As this method is developed based on an extended version of the orthonormal PAST (OPAST), the steering vector can be recursively estimated with very low complexity and moving sources can be handled. To further improve the performance of beamforming, the uncertainty of the array covariance matrix is taken into account. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed method performs well in the presence of uncertainties. © 2012 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    Endocervical glandular neoplasia associated with lobular endocervical glandular hyperplasia is HPV-independent and correlates with carbonic anhydrase-IX expression: a Gynaecological Oncology Group Study.

    BackgroundLobular endocervical glandular hyperplasia (LEGH) is a rare lesion of the uterine cervix. It has been proposed that LEGH may represent a precursor lesion to a group of mucinous adenocarcinoma with gastric phenotype (GA) that is independent of high-risk human papillomavirus (H-HPV) infection. Carbonic anhydrase-IX (CA-IX) is highly expressed in conventional glandular lesions (CGLs). However, expression of CA-IX in LEGH or GA has not been studied.MethodsIn all, 12 CGLs, 7 LEGHs, 6 LEGHs with coexisting adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS, 3) and GA (3) were identified from Japanese women with a cytological diagnosis of atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance. Immunostaining was used to detect CA-IX and p16(INK)4(a) (hereafter termed p16) protein expression in the tissues and CA-IX protein expression in the Papanicolaou smears (PSs). Polymerase chain reaction was used to detect H-HPV DNA in liquid-based cytology.ResultsOut of 12 (83%) CGLs, 10 were positive with H-HPV and high levels of CA-IX expression were seen in all (100%) cases. P16 protein expression was observed in 11 out of 12 (92%) cases. None of the LEGHs, LEGHs with AIS or GA were positive for H-HPV and only 8 out of 13 (62%) showed focal weak (1+) p16 expression. In contrast, all cases (100%) exhibited strong CA-IX protein expression.ConclusionOur study suggests that there are different molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis resulting in CGLs vs LEGHs associated with AIS or GA. There is also a possible link between LEGHs and GAs. Furthermore, CA-IX expression may serve as a useful biomarker for the detection of GAs in the absence of H-HPV infection

    Discovering sequential rental patterns by fleet tracking

As one of the most well-known methods on customer analysis, sequential pattern mining generally focuses on customer business transactions to discover their behaviors. However in the real-world rental industry, behaviors are usually linked to other factors in terms of actual equipment circumstance. Fleet tracking factors, such as location and usage, have been widely considered as important features to improve work performance and predict customer preferences. In this paper, we propose an innovative sequential pattern mining method to discover rental patterns by combining business transactions with the fleet tracking factors. A novel sequential pattern mining framework is designed to detect the effective items by utilizing both business transactions and fleet tracking information. Experimental results on real datasets testify the effectiveness of our approach

    Lewis x (Lex, CD15), also known as SSEA-1 (stage specific embryonic antigen-1), is a trisaccharide with the structure Galβ(1–4)Fucα(1–3)GlcNAc, which is expressed on glycoconjugates in human polymorphonuclear granulocytes and various tumors such as colon and breast carcinoma. We have investigated the role of Lex in the adhesion of MCF-7 human breast cancer cells and PMN to human umbilical endothelial cells (HUVEC) and the effects of two different anti-Lex mAbs (FC-2.15 and MCS-1) on this adhesion. We also analyzed the cytolysis of Lex+-cells induced by anti-Lex mAbs and complement when cells were adhered to the endothelium, and the effect of these antibodies on HUVEC. The results indicate that MCF-7 cells can bind to HUVEC, and that MCS-1 but not FC-2.15 mAb inhibit this interaction. Both mAbs can efficiently lyse MCF-7 cells bound to HUVEC in the presence of complement without damaging endothelial cells. We also found a Lex-dependent PMN interaction with HUVEC. Although both anti-Lex mAbs lysed PMN in suspension and adhered to HUVEC, PMN aggregation was only induced by mAb FC-2.15. Blotting studies revealed that the endothelial scavenger receptor C-type lectin (SRCL), which binds Lex-trisaccharide, interacts with specific glycoproteins of Mr␣∼␣28 kD and 10 kD from MCF-7 cells.
