    Asthma is a chronic airway disease characterized by variable expiratory airflow limitation that affects people of all ages, especially children and teenagers. The incidence of asthma varies between 1% and 20% globally, and and asthma is among the leading causes of chronic respiratory diseases that cause morbidity and mortality. It is known that genetic and environmental factors play a role in the development of asthma. OS causes serious damage to macromolecules such as lipid, protein and DNA, and this leads to harmful results in respiratory tract diseases. Increased OS in asthma triggers lipid peroxidation and increases tissue damage and causes inflammatory response. Recently, studies investigating the effect of oxidative stress on asthma continue to increase. Therefore, it is clinically very important to determine the exact role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of asthma. In this review, it is aimed to examine the effect of oxidative stress on asthma and to evaluate the recent studies and findings.Astım, her yaştan insanı, özellikle çocukları ve gençleri etkileyen, değişken ekspiratuvar hava akımı kısıtlanması ile karakterize kronik hava yolu hastalığıdır..Astımın insidansı küresel olarak 1% ile 20 % arasında değişmektedir ve astım morbidite ve mortaliteye neden olan kronik solunum hastalıkları arasında önde gelen nedenler arasında yer almaktadır. Astım gelişiminde genetik ve çevresel faktörlerin rol oynadığı bilinmektedir. Oksidatif stres (OS) lipit, protein ve DNA gibi makromoleküllerde ciddi hasarlara neden olmakta ve bu da solunum yolu hastalıklarında zararlı sonuçlara yol açmaktadır. Astımda artmış OS, lipid peroksidasyonunu tetikler ve doku hasarını arttırır ve inflamatuar yanıta neden olur. Son zamanlarda OS’nin astım üzerindeki etkisini araştıran çalışmalar artarak devam etmektedir. Bu nedenle, astım patogenezinde oksidatif stresin kesin rolünün belirlenmesi klinik olarak çok önemlidir. Bu derlemede OS’nin astım üzerindeki etkisinin incelenmesi ve son yıllarda yapılan çalışmaların ve bulguların değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır

    Evaluation of the cytotoxicity of contemporary glass-ionomer cements on mouse fibroblasts and human dental pulp cells

    Purpose This study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxic effects of different types of contemporary GICs on human dental pulp cell (hDPCs) and mouse fibroblast (L929) cultures. Methods Three high-viscosity GICs (HVGIC; GC Equia Forte, Riva Self Cure, IonoStar Plus), three resin-modified GICs (RMGIC; Photac Fil, Riva Light Cure, Ionolux), and a metal-reinforced GIC (MRGIC; Riva Silver) were investigated. Twelve disc-shaped specimens of each material were prepared and stored in Dulbecco's modified Eagle medium (DMEM). L929 fibroblasts and DPCs were then cultured in 96-well plates. Uncultured DMEM was used as a negative control. Mitochondrial dehydrogenase activity (MTT) assays were performed to detect cell viability after 24, 48, and 72 h. Data were analysed using Mann-Whitney U and Friedman tests followed by a Bonferroni-corrected Wilcoxon signed rank test, with the statistical significance set at P GC Equia Forte > IonoStar Plus = Riva Light Cure = Photac Fil > Ionolux. MTT assays of DPCs showed the percentages of viable cells to be significantly lower for the Ionolux group when compared to the other GICs, which did not differ significantly from one another. With the exception of Ionolux, none of the other GICs tested showed any toxicity, and in fact, they all induced cell proliferation (> 100% cell viability). Conclusions Although the degree of toxicity varied between the two cell-culture systems investigated, all the GICs tested, with the exception of Ionolux, performed favorably with regard to cytotoxicity (> 100% cell viability in both cell systems)

    This review aimed to highlight some important points derived from the presentations of the European Respiratory Society 2021 Virtual International Congress by a committee formed by the Early Career Task Group of the Turkish Thoracic Society. We summarized a wide range of topics including current developments of respiratory diseases and provided an overview of important and striking topics of the congress. Our primary motivation was to give some up-to-date information and new developments discussed during congress especially for the pulmonologists who did not have a chance to follow the congress. This review also committed an opportunity to get an overview of the newest data in the diverse fields of respiratory medicine such as post-coronavirus disease 2019, some new interventional and technologic developments related to respiratory health, and new treatment strategies

    Perceived Need for Mental Health Services Among Healthcare Workers During the Coronavirus disease-19 Pandemic in Turkey: A Multicenter Cross-sectional Study.

    Background: The coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic has contributed to work-related psychosocial risks in healthcare workers.Aims: To evaluate the perceived need for mental health services and related factors in Turkish healthcare workers practicing in pandemic hospitals.Study Design: Cross-sectional study.Methods: Data were collected from face-to-face interviews with healthcare workers at 19 pandemic hospitals in 13 provinces between September and November 2021. The study survey included the evaluation of the perceived need for and utilization of mental health services in the previous year, as well as sociodemographic, health-related, and work-related characteristics, the General Health Questionnaire-12, the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQoL-BREF) questionnaire, and the Fear of coronavirus disease-2019 scale (FCV-19S).Results: Of 1,556 participants, 522 (33.5%) reported a perceived need for mental health services, but only 133 (8.5%) reported receiving these services. Multiple logistic regression analysis of the perceived need for mental health services revealed significant relationships with lower age, female sex, being a current smoker, having a chronic disease, having a mental disorder, coronavirus disease-2019 contact within the last three months in settings other than the home or workplace, a positive coronavirus disease-2019 vaccination history, being a physician, being a non-physician healthcare professional, and coronavirus disease-2019 contact within the last three months at work. After adjustment for these characteristics, higher General Health Questionnaire-12 and FCV-19S scores and lower WHOQoL-BREF domain scores were related to the perceived need for mental health services in logistic regression analyses.Conclusion: The findings indicate a substantial need for mental health services amongst Turkish healthcare workers during the pandemic and outline participants' characteristics regarding high-priority groups for the intervention. Future research may focus on developing actions and evaluating their efficiency

Our knowledge concerning every aspect of COVID-19is evolving rapidly, given the increasing data from all over the world. In this narrative review, the Turkish Thoracic Society Early CareerTaskforce members aimed to provide a summary on recent literature regarding epidemiology, clinical findings, diagnosis, treatment,prevention, and control of COVID-19. Studies revealed that the genetic sequence of the novel coronavirus showed significant identityto SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptor is an important target of the SARS-CoV-2 while entering anorganism. Smokers were more likely to develop the disease and have a higher risk for ICU admission. The mean incubation periodwas 6.4 days, whereas asymptomatic transmission was reported up to 25 days after infection. Fever and cough were the most commonsymptoms, and cardiovascular diseases and hypertension were reported to be the most common comorbidities among patients. Clinicalmanifestations range from asymptomatic and mild disease to severe acute respiratory distress syndrome. Several patients showed typicalsymptoms and radiological changes with negative RT-PCR but positive IgG and IgM antibodies. Although radiological findings may vary,bilateral, peripherally distributed, ground-glass opacities were typical of COVID-19. Poor prognosis was associated with older age, higherSequential Organ Failure Assessment score, and high D-dimer level. Chloroquine was found to be effective in reducing viral replicationin vitro.
