State-of-the-art report childlessness in Europe

In the last decades, European societies have experienced changes in the postponement of the age of having a first child, shrinking family size, and increased (in)voluntary childlessness. This report provides a review of the state-of-the-art research in relation to one of the central research goals of Working Package 4: to examine the rise, determinants and societal consequences of childlessness by different perspectives. The report provides an overview of the central macro-level determinants of childlessness among women and men firstly from a quantitative perspective examining trends, relevant determinants and measures. We will then outline the central micro-level determinants of childlessness among women, men and couples by examining core characteristics of childless individuals such as higher education or marital disruption. We then turn to an overview of anthropological and qualitative examinations of the determinants of childlessness and the psychological, social and socio-political consequences of childlessness. A reflection on potential data sources to study childlessness and a discussion on research gaps are offered in the concluding chapters. </p

Pollination and reproduction of an invasive plant inside and outside its ancestral range

Comparing traits of invasive species within and beyond their ancestral range may improve our understanding of processes that promote aggressive spread. Solanum elaeagnifolium (silverleaf nightshade) is a noxious weed in its ancestral range in North America and is invasive on other continents. We compared investment in flowers and ovules, pollination success, and fruit and seed set in populations from Arizona, USA ("AZ") and Greece ("GR"). In both countries, the populations we sampled varied in size and types of present-day disturbance. Stature of plants increased with population size in AZ samples whereas GR plants were uniformly tall. Taller plants produced more flowers, and GR plants produced more flowers for a given stature and allocated more ovules per flower. Similar functional groups of native bees pollinated in AZ and GR populations, but visits to flowers decreased with population size and we observed no visits in the largest GR populations. As a result, plants in large GR populations were pollen-limited, and estimates of fecundity were lower on average in GR populations despite the larger allocation to flowers and ovules. These differences between plants in our AZ and GR populations suggest promising directions for further study. 'Narrations of the nation in mobility life stories: gendered scripts, emotional spheres and transnational performativity in the Greek diaspora'

As a translocal, transcultural and transnational phenomenon, migration in its varying manifestations of mobility pathways (e.g. ancestral homeland return, homecoming visits, etc.) is a highly emotional experience, deeply performative and gendered in cultural processes often translated through the hegemony of the nation. Diasporic lives are vastly interrupted and disrupted through both temporal and spatial shifts beyond physical movement as the cultural politics of social and ethno-national institutions re-configure migrant lives in the ‘here’ and ‘there’ of the respective ‘home’ and ‘host’ lands. Understanding the perfomativity of gendered migrant lives requires a range of translations from the micropersonal to macrosocial as social subjects cross both imaginative and pragmatic boundaries in their movement across continents and cultural worlds. This chapter aims to unravel the complexities of such emotional and gendered negotiations by exploring a range of experiences that Greek migrants encounter in various diasporic and transnational settings and their embodied representations in everyday life. The analysis draws from extensive empirical data gathered in the last decade through multi-sited and multi-method research with first- and second-generation Greek migrants in various European and North American destination countries
