Semiclassical theory of quasiparticles in the superconducting state
We have developed a semiclassical approach to solving the Bogoliubov - de
Gennes equations for superconductors. It is based on the study of classical
orbits governed by an effective Hamiltonian corresponding to the quasiparticles
in the superconducting state and includes an account of the Bohr-Sommerfeld
quantisation rule, the Maslov index, torus quantisation, topological phases
arising from lines of phase singularities (vortices), and semiclassical wave
functions for multi-dimensional systems. The method is illustrated by studying
the problem of an SNS junction and a single vortex.Comment: 74 pages, 19 figures, 3 tables. Submitted to Academic Press for

D0 Matrix Mechanics: New Fuzzy Solutions at Large N
We wish to consider in this report the large N limit of a particular matrix
model introduced by Myers describing D-brane physics in the presence of an RR
flux background. At finite N, fuzzy spheres appear naturally as non-trivial
solutions to this matrix model and have been extensively studied. In this
report, we wish to demonstrate several new classes of solutions which appear in
the large N limit, corresponding to the fuzzy cylinder, the fuzzy plane and a
warped fuzzy plane. The latter two solutions arise from a possible "central
extension" to our model that arises after we account for non-trivial issues
involved in the large N limit. As is the case for finite N, these new solutions
are to be interpreted as constituent D0-branes forming D2 bound states
describing new fuzzy geometries.Comment: revised version: references added, derivation of "central extensions"
improved upon. To appear in JHE
Towards liver-directed gene therapy: Retrovirus-mediated gene transfer into human hepatocytes
Liver-directed gene therapy is being considered in the treatment of inherited metabolic diseases. One approach we are considering is the transplantation of autologous hepatocytes that have been genetically modified with recombinant retroviruses ex vivo. We describe, in this report, techniques for isolating human hepatocytes and efficiently transducing recombinant genes into primary cultures. Hepatocytes were isolated from tissue of four different donors, plated in primary culture, and exposed to recombinant retroviruses expressing either the LacZ reporter gene or the cDNA for rabbit LDL receptor. The efficiency of gene transfer under optimal conditions, as determined by Southern blot analysis, varied from a maximum of one proviral copy per cell to a minimum of 0.1 proviral copy per cell. Cytochemical assays were used to detect expression of the recombinant derived proteins, E. coli β-galactosidase and rabbit LDL receptor. Hepatocytes transduced with the LDL receptor gene expressed levels of receptor protein that exceeded the normal endogenous levels. The ability to isolate and genetically modify human hepatocytes, as described in this report, is an important step towards the development of liver-directed gene therapies in humans.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/45540/1/11188_2005_Article_BF01233625.pd
Detector Technologies for CLIC
The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a high-energy high-luminosity linear
electron-positron collider under development. It is foreseen to be built and
operated in three stages, at centre-of-mass energies of 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3
TeV, respectively. It offers a rich physics program including direct searches
as well as the probing of new physics through a broad set of precision
measurements of Standard Model processes, particularly in the Higgs-boson and
top-quark sectors. The precision required for such measurements and the
specific conditions imposed by the beam dimensions and time structure put
strict requirements on the detector design and technology. This includes
low-mass vertexing and tracking systems with small cells, highly granular
imaging calorimeters, as well as a precise hit-time resolution and power-pulsed
operation for all subsystems. A conceptual design for the CLIC detector system
was published in 2012. Since then, ambitious R&D programmes for silicon vertex
and tracking detectors, as well as for calorimeters have been pursued within
the CLICdp, CALICE and FCAL collaborations, addressing the challenging detector
requirements with innovative technologies. This report introduces the
experimental environment and detector requirements at CLIC and reviews the
current status and future plans for detector technology R&D.Comment: 152 pages, 116 figures; published as CERN Yellow Report Monograph

Higgs Physics at the CLIC Electron-Positron Linear Collider
The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is an option for a future e+e- collider operating at centre-of-mass energies up to 3 TeV, providing sensitivity to a wide range of new physics phenomena and precision physics measurements at the energy frontier. This paper is the first comprehensive presentation of the Higgs physics reach of CLIC operating at three energy stages: sqrt(s) = 350 GeV, 1.4 TeV and 3 TeV. The initial stage of operation allows the study of Higgs boson production in Higgsstrahlung (e+e- -> ZH) and WW-fusion (e+e- -> Hnunu), resulting in precise measurements of the production cross sections, the Higgs total decay width Gamma_H, and model-independent determinations of the Higgs couplings. Operation at sqrt(s) > 1 TeV provides high-statistics samples of Higgs bosons produced through WW-fusion, enabling tight constraints on the Higgs boson couplings. Studies of the rarer processes e+e- -> ttH and e+e- -> HHnunu allow measurements of the top Yukawa coupling and the Higgs boson self-coupling. This paper presents detailed studies of the precision achievable with Higgs measurements at CLIC and describes the interpretation of these measurements in a global fit.The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is an option for a future collider operating at centre-of-mass energies up to , providing sensitivity to a wide range of new physics phenomena and precision physics measurements at the energy frontier. Target and double spin asymmetries of deeply virtual pi(0) production with a longitudinally polarized proton target and CLAS
The target and double spin asymmetries of the exclusive pseudoscalar channel
were measured for the first time in the
deep-inelastic regime using a longitudinally polarized 5.9 GeV electron beam
and a longitudinally polarized proton target at Jefferson Lab with the CEBAF
Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). The data were collected over a large
kinematic phase space and divided into 110 four-dimensional bins of ,
, and . Large values of asymmetry moments clearly indicate a
substantial contribution to the polarized structure functions from transverse
virtual photon amplitudes. The interpretation of experimental data in terms of
generalized parton distributions (GPDs) provides the first insight on the
chiral-odd GPDs and , and complement previous measurements
of unpolarized structure functions sensitive to the GPDs and .
These data provide necessary constraints for chiral-odd GPD parametrizations
and will strongly influence existing theoretical handbag models
