An experimental investigation of the angular scattering and backscattering behaviors of the simulated clouds of the outer planets
A cryogenic, 50 liter volume Planetary Cloud Simulation Chamber has been constructed to permit the laboratory study of the cloud compositions which are likely to be found in the atmospheres of the outer planets. On the basis of available data, clouds composed of water ice, carbon dioxide, and liquid and solid ammonia and methane, both pure and in various mixtures, have been generated. Cloud microphysical observations have been permitted through the use of a cloud particle slide injector and photomicrography. Viewports in the lower chamber have enabled the collection of cloud backscattering data using 633 and 838 nm laser light, including linear depolarization ratios and complete Stokes parameterization. The considerable technological difficulties associated with the collection of angular scattering patterns within the chamber, however, could not be completely overcome
Optical scattering and microphysical properties of subvisual cirrus clouds, and climatic implications
The optical and microphysical properties of subvisual cirrus clouds are derived from ground-based polarization lidar, shortwave radiation flux, and solar corona measurements of two approximately 0.75 km deep cirrus located near the tropopause. The first cloud produced no visual manifestations under excellent viewing conditions, and the second appeared to be a persistent aircraft contrail that was generally visible except in the zenith direction. Average lidar linear depolarization ratios and volume backscatter coefficients for the two clouds were 0.19 and 0.35, and 0.6x10 to the -3 and 1.4x10 to the -3 /km sr, respectively. It is estimated that the zenith-subvisual cirrus contained ice crystals of 25 micron effective diameter at a mean concentration of 25/l and ice mass content of 0.2 mg/cu m. The threshold cloud optical thickness for visual-versus-invisible cirrus, derived from both broadband shortwave flux and 0.694 micrometer lidar data, is found to be tau sub c approx equal 0.03. Such tau values are comparable to those of 5 to 10 km deep stratospheric aerosol clouds of volcanic origin and polar stratospheric clouds, which are episodic in nature. Hence, we conclude that if these clouds are a fairly common feature of the upper troposphere, as recent SAGE satellite measurements would suggest, then the impact of natural and contrail subvisual cirrus on the planet's radiation balance may be relatively significant
Foreign workers and international partners as channels to international markets in core, intermediate and peripheral regions
Past contributions stress that international ties in the form of foreign workers and international collaboration enable firms to be present in international markets by providing access to diverse knowledge, and professional and social networks. These mechanisms have, however, not undergone the same empirical scrutiny for firms in intermediate and peripheral regions. If firms in more peripheral regions are able to tap into the global economy using international channels, this has important implications, for example, for the localization decision of firms. The empirical analysis builds on linked employerâemployee data (LEED) merged with community innovation survey (CIS) data. The results demonstrate that there is a positive association between international ties and international market presence for firms in core, intermediate and peripheral regions, demonstrating that peripheral regions are not detached from global processes. There are, however, slight different patterns observed, for example, indicating that different collaboration partners are used in order to reach international markets for firms in core, intermediate and peripheral regions
Filling some black holes: modeling the connection between urbanization, infrastructure, and global service intensity
This empirical article combines insights from previous research on the level of knowledge-intensive service in metropolitan areas with the aim to develop an understanding of the spatial structure of the global service economy. We use a stepwise regression model with the Globalization and World Cities research network's measure of globalized service provisioning as the dependent variable and a range of variables focusing on population, infrastructure, urban primacy, and national regulation as independent variables. The discussion of the results focuses on model parameters as well as the meaning of outliers and is used to explore some avenues for future research
Social Preferences, Skill Segregation and Wage Dynamics
We study the earning structure and the equilibrium asignment of workers to firms in a model in which workers have social preferences, and skills are perfectly substitutable in production. Firms offer long-term contracts, and we allow for frictions in the labour market in the form of mobility costs. The model delivers specific predictions about the nature of worker flows, about the characteristic of workplace skill segregation, and about wage dispersion both within and cross firms. We shows that long-term contracts in the resence of social preferences associate within-firm wage dispersion with novel "internal labour market" features such as gradual promotions, productivity-unrelated wage increases, and downward wage flexibility. These three dynamic features lead to productivity-unrelated wage volatily within firms.Publicad
Aviation effects on already-existing cirrus clouds.
Determining the effects of the formation of contrails within natural cirrus clouds has proven to be challenging. Quantifying any such effects is necessary if we are to properly account for the influence of aviation on climate. Here we quantify the effect of aircraft on the optical thickness of already-existing cirrus clouds by matching actual aircraft flight tracks to satellite lidar measurements. We show that there is a systematic, statistically significant increase in normalized cirrus cloud optical thickness inside mid-latitude flight tracks compared with adjacent areas immediately outside the tracks

vicinity of the f_0(980) resonance is explained in our analysis as interference

Removing the physician from the equation:Patient-controlled, home-based therapeutic drug self-monitoring of tacrolimus
The dosing of tacrolimus, which forms the backbone of immunosuppressive therapy after kidney transplantation, is complex. This is due to its variable pharmacokinetics (both between and within individual patients), narrow therapeutic index, and the severe consequences of over- and underexposure, which may cause toxicity and rejection, respectively. Tacrolimus is, therefore, routinely dosed by means of therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM). TDM is performed for as long as the transplant functions and frequent and often lifelong sampling is therefore the rule. This puts a significant burden on patients and transplant professionals and is associated with high healthcare-associated costs. Furthermore, by its very nature, TDM is reactive and has no predictive power. Finally, the current practice of TDM does not foresee in an active role for patients themselves. Rather, the physician or pharmacist prescribes the next tacrolimus dose after obtaining the concentration measurement test results. In this article, we propose a strategy of patient-controlled, home-based, self-TDM of the immunosuppressant tacrolimus after transplantation. We argue that with the combined use of population tacrolimus pharmacokinetic models, home-based sampling by means of dried blood spotting and implementation of telemedicine, this may become a feasible approach in the near future
West-Central Asia: a comparative analysis of studentsâ trajectories in Russia (Moscow) from the 1980s and China (Yiwu) from the 2000s
Through an exploration of oral history and ethnographic material, this article makes a comparative examination of the life-trajectories of students from Yemen, Iraq, and Afghanistan who studied in Russia (Moscow) during the late 1980s, and from Tajikistan, Iran, Azerbaijan and Saudi Arabia who studied in China in the 2000s. In contrast to the cohort of students in Moscow who were mainly men from places with relatively amicable relations with the USSR, the female students of Muslim background from West and Central Asia regarded China as a place where they could pursue fulfilling forms of economic and personal autonomy. By comparing these two groups of international students, this article sheds light into the nature of historical, geographical and geopolitical connections and disconnections between West-Central Asia, Eurasia (especially Russia) and East Asia (especially China). By centring its attention to the demise of Soviet/Russian education and the emergence of China as a figure of economic prosperity, the article theorises West-Central Asia as a particular arena of interaction suitable to comprehend the networks, âthird spacesâ or zones of interaction (e.g. Moscow and Yiwu), and forms of connection fostered by these studentsâ trajectories
