Chirped in-fibre Bragg grating dispersion compensators: Linearization of dispersion characteristic and demonstration of dispersion compensation in 100km, 10 Gbit/s optical fibre link
An apodized chirped in-fibre Bragg grating that has a linear dispersion characteristic is reported. The frequency components of an optical pulse (centre wavelength 1551 nm; 10 GHz bandwidth) incident on the grating are reflected with a relative delay that varies linearly from 0 to 130 ps across the spectral width of the pulse. The dispersion compensator is used to correct for the dispersion in a 100 km link (nondispersion shifted fibre) operating at a 10 Gbit/s transmission rate and a wavelength of 1551 nm
Detections of [C II] 158 m and [O III] 88 m in a Local Lyman Continuum Emitter, Mrk 54, and its Implications to High-redshift ALMA Studies
We present integral field, far-infrared (FIR) spectroscopy of Mrk 54, a local
Lyman Continuum Emitter (LCE), obtained with FIFI-LS on the Stratospheric
Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. This is only the second time, after Haro
11, that [C II] 158 m and [O III] 88 m spectroscopy of the known LCEs
have been obtained. We find that Mrk 54 has a strong [C II] emission that
accounts for % of the total FIR luminosity, whereas it has only moderate
[O III] emission, resulting in the low [O III]/[C II] luminosity ratio of
. In order to investigate whether [O III]/[C II] is a useful
tracer of (LyC escape fraction), we examine the correlations of
[O III]/[C II] and (i) the optical line ratio of [O III]
5007 \AA/[O II] 3727 \AA, (ii) specific star formation rate, (iii) [O III] 88
m/[O I] 63 m ratio, (iv) gas phase metallicity, and (v) dust
temperature based on a combined sample of Mrk 54 and the literature data from
the Herschel Dwarf Galaxy Survey and the LITTLE THINGS Survey. We find that
galaxies with high [O III]/[C II] luminosity ratios could be the result of high
ionization (traced by ), bursty star formation, high
ionized-to-neutral gas volume filling factors (traced by [O III] 88 m/[O
I] 63 m), and low gas-phase metallicities, which is in agreement with
theoretical predictions. We present an empirical relation between the [O
III]/[C II] ratio and based on the combination of the [O III]/[C
II] and correlation, and the known relation between
and . The relation implies that high-redshift galaxies with high
[O III]/[C II] ratios revealed by ALMA may have ,

RIOJA. Complex Dusty Starbursts in a Major Merger B14-65666 at z=7.15
We present JWST NIRCam imaging of B14-65666 ("Big Three Dragons"), a bright
Lyman-break galaxy system ( mag) at . The high
angular resolution of NIRCam reveals the complex morphology of two galaxy
components: galaxy E has a compact core (E-core), surrounded by diffuse,
extended, rest-frame optical emission, which is likely to be tidal tails; and
galaxy W has a clumpy and elongated morphology with a blue UV slope
(). The flux excess, F356WF444W, peaks at the
E-core ( mag), tracing the presence of strong [OIII]
4960,5008 \r{A} emission. ALMA archival data show that the bluer galaxy W is
brighter in dust continua than the redder galaxy E, while the tails are bright
in [OIII] 88 . The UV/optical and sub-mm SED fitting confirms
that B14-65666 is a major merger in a starburst phase as derived from the
stellar mass ratio (3:1 to 2:1) and the star-formation rate, dex
higher than the star-formation main sequence at the same redshift. The galaxy E
is a dusty ( mag) starburst with a possible high dust
temperature (- K). The galaxy W would have a low dust temperature
(- K) or patchy stellar-and-dust geometry, as suggested from the
infrared excess (IRX) and diagram. The high optical-to-FIR
[OIII] line ratio of the E-core shows its lower gas-phase metallicity
( Z) than the galaxy W. These results agree with a
scenario where major mergers disturb morphology and induce nuclear dusty
starbursts triggered by less-enriched inflows. B14-65666 shows a picture of
complex stellar buildup processes during major mergers in the epoch of

Bright Extragalactic ALMA Redshift Survey (BEARS) III: Detailed study of emission lines from 71 Herschel targets
We analyse the molecular and atomic emission lines of 71 bright
Herschel-selected galaxies between redshifts 1.4 to 4.6 detected by the Atacama
Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array. These lines include a total of 156 CO, [C
I], and H2O emission lines. For 46 galaxies, we detect two transitions of CO
lines, and for these galaxies we find gas properties similar to those of other
dusty star-forming galaxy (DSFG) samples. A comparison to photo-dissociation
models suggests that most of Herschel-selected galaxies have similar
interstellar medium conditions as local infrared-luminous galaxies and
high-redshift DSFGs, although with denser gas and more intense far-ultraviolet
radiation fields than normal star-forming galaxies. The line luminosities agree
with the luminosity scaling relations across five orders of magnitude, although
the star-formation and gas surface density distributions (i.e.,
Schmidt-Kennicutt relation) suggest a different star-formation phase in our
galaxies (and other DSFGs) compared to local and low-redshift gas-rich, normal
star-forming systems. The gas-to-dust ratios of these galaxies are similar to
Milky Way values, with no apparent redshift evolution. Four of 46 sources
appear to have CO line ratios in excess of the expected maximum (thermalized)
profile, suggesting a rare phase in the evolution of DSFGs. Finally, we create
a deep stacked spectrum over a wide rest-frame frequency (220-890 GHz) that
reveals faint transitions from HCN and CH, in line with previous stacking

Gas conditions of a star-formation selected sample in the first billion years
We present Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array (ALMA) observations of the [O iii] 88 emission of a sample of thirteen galaxies at to 7.6 selected as [C ii]-emitting companion sources of quasars. To disentangle the origins of the luminous Oxygen line in the Universe, we looked at emission-line galaxies that are selected through an excellent star-formation tracer [C ii] with star-formation rates between 9 and 162. Direct observations reveal [O iii] emission in just a single galaxy (), and a stacked image shows no [O iii] detection, providing deep upper limits on the ratios in the Universe (at). While the fidelity of this sample is high, no obvious optical/near-infrared counterpart is seen in the JWST imaging available for four galaxies. Additionally accounting for low-z CO emitters, line stacking shows that our sample-wide result remains robust: The enhanced reported in the first billion years of the Universe is likely due to the selection towards bright, blue Lyman-break galaxies with high surface star-formation rates or young stellar populations. The deep upper limit on the rest-frame 90 μm continuum emission (Jy at), implies a low average dust temperature (K) and high-dust mass (). As more normal galaxies are explored in the early Universe, synergy between JWST and ALMA is fundamental to further investigate the ISM properties of the a broad range of samples of high-z galaxies
Role of TNF-α in lung tight junction alteration in mouse model of acute lung inflammation
In the present study, we used tumor necrosis factor-R1 knock out mice (TNF-αR1KO) to understand the roles of TNF-α on epithelial function in models of carrageenan-induced acute lung inflammation. In order to elucidate whether the observed anti-inflammatory status is related to the inhibition of TNF-α, we also investigated the effect of etanercept, a TNF-α soluble receptor construct, on lung TJ function. Pharmacological and genetic TNF-α inhibition significantly reduced the degree of (1) TNF-α production in pleural exudates and in the lung tissues, (2) the inflammatory cell infiltration in the pleural cavity as well as in the lung tissues (evaluated by MPO activity), (3) the alteration of ZO-1, Claudin-2, Claudin-4, Claudin-5 and β-catenin (immunohistochemistry) and (4) apoptosis (TUNEL staining, Bax, Bcl-2 expression). Taken together, our results demonstrate that inhibition of TNF-α reduces the tight junction permeability in the lung tissues associated with acute lung inflammation, suggesting a possible role of TNF-α on lung barrier dysfunction
Factors affecting commencement and cessation of smoking behaviour in Malaysian adults
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Tobacco consumption peak in developed countries has passed, however, it is on the increase in many developing countries. Apart from cigarettes, consumption of local hand-rolled cigarettes such as <it>bidi </it>and <it>rokok daun </it>are prevalent in specific communities. Although factors associated with smoking initiation and cessation has been investigated elsewhere, the only available data for Malaysia is on prevalence. This study aims to investigate factors associated with smoking initiation and cessation which is imperative in designing intervention programs.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Data were collected from 11,697 adults by trained recording clerks on sociodemographic characteristics, practice of other risk habit and details of smoking such as type, duration and frequency. Smoking commencement and cessation were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier estimates and log-rank tests. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to calculate the hazard rate ratios.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Males had a much higher prevalence of the habit (61.7%) as compared to females (5.8%). Cessation was found to be most common among the Chinese and those regularly consuming alcoholic beverages. Kaplan-Meier plot shows that although males are more likely to start smoking, females are found to be less likely to stop. History of betel quid chewing and alcohol consumption significantly increase the likelihood of commencement (p < 0.0001), while cessation was least likely among Indians, current quid chewers and kretek users (p < 0.01).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Gender, ethnicity, history of quid chewing and alcohol consumption have been found to be important factors in smoking commencement; while ethnicity, betel quid chewing and type of tobacco smoked influences cessation.</p
Adherence to treatment to help quit smoking: effects of task performance and coping with withdrawal symptoms
Background:
Currently the combined cognitive-behavioral and pharmacological treatment is the best option to quit smoking, although success rates remain moderate. This study aimed to identify predictors of continuous abstinence in an assisted smoking cessation program using combined treatment. In particular, we analyzed the effects of socio-demographic, smoking-, and treatment-related variables. In addition, we analyzed the effect of several risk factors on abstinence, and estimated a model of risk for smoking relapse.Methods:
Participants were 125 workers at the University of Granada (50 males), with an average age of 46.91 years (SD = 8.15). They were recruited between 2009 and 2013 at an occupational health clinic providing smoking cessation treatment. Baseline measures included socio-demographic data, preferred brand of cigarettes, number of years smoking, use of alcohol and/or tranquilizers, past attempts to quit, Fargerström Test for Nicotine Dependence, Smoking Processes of Change Scale, and Coping with Withdrawal Symptoms Interview. Participants were invited to a face-to-face assessment of smoking abstinence using self-report and cooximetry hemoglobin measures at 3, 6, and 12 months follow-up. The main outcome was smoking status coded as “relapse” versus “abstinence” at each follow-up. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed to estimate the probability of continued abstinence during 12 months and log-rank tests were used to analyze differences in continued abstinence as a function of socio-demographic, smoking-, and treatment-related variables. Cox regression was used to analyze the simultaneous effect of several risk factors on abstinence.Results:
Using alcohol and/or tranquilizers was related to shorter abstinence. Physical exercise, the number of treatment sessions, performance of treatment tasks, and coping with withdrawal symptoms were related to prolonged abstinence. In particular, failure to perform the treatment tasks tripled the risk of relapse, while lack of coping doubled it.Conclusions:
Our results show that physical exercise, performance of treatment-related tasks, and effective coping with withdrawal symptoms can prolong abstinence from smoking. Programs designed to help quit smoking can benefit from the inclusion of these factors.This research was supported by the Occupational Medicine Area (Prevention Service) of the University of Granada
Concurrent Proinflammatory and Apoptotic Activity of a Helicobacter pylori Protein (HP986) Points to Its Role in Chronic Persistence
Helicobacter pylori induces cytokine mediated changes in gastroduodenal pathophysiology, wherein, the activated macrophages at the sub-mucosal space play a central role in mounting innate immune response against the antigens. The bacterium gains niche through persistent inflammation and local immune-suppression causing peptic ulcer disease or chronic gastritis; the latter being a significant risk factor for the development of gastric adenocarcinoma. What favors persistence of H. pylori in the gastric niches is not clearly understood. We report detailed characterization of a functionally unknown gene (HP986), which was detected in patient isolates associated with peptic ulcer and gastric carcinoma. Expression and purification of recombinant HP986 (rHP986) revealed a novel, ∼29 kDa protein in biologically active form which associates with significant levels of humoral immune responses in diseased individuals (p<0.001). Also, it induced significant levels of TNF-α and Interleukin-8 in cultured human macrophages concurrent to the translocation of nuclear transcription factor-κB (NF-κB). Further, the rHP986 induced apoptosis of cultured macrophages through a Fas mediated pathway. Dissection of the underlying signaling mechanism revealed that rHP986 induces both TNFR1 and Fas expression to lead to apoptosis. We further demonstrated interaction of HP986 with TNFR1 through computational and experimental approaches. Independent proinflammatory and apoptotic responses triggered by rHP986 as shown in this study point to its role, possibly as a survival strategy to gain niche through inflammation and to counter the activated macrophages to avoid clearance

A novel high-<i>z</i> submm galaxy efficient line survey in ALMA bands 3 through 8 - an ANGELS pilot
We use the Atacama Large sub/Millimetre Array (ALMA) to efficiently observe spectral lines across Bands 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 at high-resolution (0.″5 – 0.″1) for 16 bright southern Herschel sources at 1.5 2O and H2O+) and absorption (OH+ and CH+). The morphologies based on dust continuum ranges from extended sources to strong lensed galaxies with magnifications between 2 and 30. CO line transitions indicate a diverse set of excitation conditions with a fraction of the sources (∼35 per cent) showcasing dense, warm gas. The resolved gas to star-formation surface densities vary strongly per source, and suggest that the observed diversity of dusty star-forming galaxies could be a combination of lensed, compact dusty starbursts and extended, potentially-merging galaxies. The predicted gas depletion timescales are consistent with 100 Myr to 1 Gyr, but require efficient fueling from the extended gas reservoirs onto the more central starbursts, referee in line with the Doppler-shifted absorption lines that indicate inflowing gas for two out of six sources. This pilot paper explores a successful new method of observing spectral lines in large samples of galaxies, supports future studies of larger samples, and finds that the efficiency of this new observational method will be further improved with the planned ALMA Wideband Sensitivity Upgrade
