    Nucleon scalar matrix elements with Nf=2+1+1N_f=2+1+1 twisted mass fermions

We compute disconnected contributions to the relevant three-point functions using an efficient noise reduction technique. Using these methods together with an only multiplicative renormalization applicable for twisted mass fermions, allows us to obtain accurate results in the light and strange sector

    Hypofractionated image-guided breath-hold SABR (Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy) of liver metastases - clinical results

    Purpose: Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR) is a non-invasive therapy option for inoperable liver oligometastases. Outcome and toxicity were retrospectively evaluated in a single-institution patient cohort who had undergone ultrasound-guided breath-hold SABR. Patients and methods: 19 patients with liver metastases of various primary tumors consecutively treated with SABR (image-guidance with stereotactic ultrasound in combination with computer-controlled breath-hold) were analysed regarding overall-survival (OS), progression-free-survival (PFS), progression pattern, local control (LC), acute and late toxicity. Results: PTV (planning target volume)-size was 108 +/- 109cm(3) (median 67.4 cm(3)). BED2 (Biologically effective dose in 2 Gy fraction) was 83.3 +/- 26.2 Gy (median 78 Gy). Median follow-up and median OS were 12 months. Actuarial 2-year-OS-rate was 31%. Median PFS was 4 months, actuarial 1-year-PFS-rate was 20%. Site of first progression was predominantly distant. Regression of irradiated lesions was observed in 84% (median time to detection of regression was 2 months). Actuarial 6-month-LC-rate was 92%, 1- and 2-years-LC-rate 57%, respectively. BED2 influenced LC. When a cut-off of BED2 = 78 Gy was used, the higher BED2 values resulted in improved local control with a statistical trend to significance (p = 0.0999). Larger PTV-sizes, inversely correlated with applied dose, resulted in lower local control, also with a trend to significance (p-value = 0.08) when a volume cut-off of 67 cm(3) was used. No local relapse was observed at PTV-sizes < 67 cm(3) and BED2 > 78 Gy. No acute clinical toxicity > degrees 2 was observed. Late toxicity was also <= degrees 2 with the exception of one gastrointestinal bleeding-episode 1 year post-SABR. A statistically significant elevation in the acute phase was observed for alkaline-phosphatase; in the chronic phase for alkaline-phosphatase, bilirubine, cholinesterase and C-reactive protein. Conclusions: A trend to statistically significant correlation of local progression was observed for BED2 and PTV-size. Dose-levels BED2 > 78 Gy cannot be reached in large lesions constituting a significant fraction of this series. Image-guided SABR (igSABR) is therefore an effective non-invasive treatment modality with low toxicity in patients with small inoperable liver metastases

    Nucleon form factors and moments of generalized parton distributions using Nf=2+1+1N_f=2+1+1 twisted mass fermions

D. 23 pages, 27 figuresWe present results on the axial and the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon, as well as, on the first moments of the nucleon generalized parton distributions using maximally twisted mass fermions. We analyze two N_f=2+1+1 ensembles having pion masses of 210 MeV and 354 MeV at two values of the lattice spacing. The lattice scale is determined using the nucleon mass computed on a total of 18 N_f=2+1+1 ensembles generated at three values of the lattice spacing, aa. The renormalization constants are evaluated non-perturbatively with a perturbative subtraction of O(a2){\cal O}(a^2)-terms. The moments of the generalized parton distributions are given in the MSˉ\bar{\rm MS} scheme at a scale of μ=2 \mu=2 GeV. We compare with recent results obtained using different discretization schemes. The implications on the spin content of the nucleon are also discussed

    Sigma terms and strangeness content of the nucleon with Nf=2+1+1Nf=2+1+1 twisted mass fermions

Talk given at the XXX International Symposium on Lattice Field Theory - Lattice 2012, June 24-29, 2012 Cairns, AustraliaWe investigate excited state contaminations in a direct computation of the nucleon σ\sigma-terms. This is an important source of systematic effects that needs to be controlled besides the light quark mass dependence and lattice artefacts. We use maximally twisted mass fermions with dynamical light (uu,dd), strange and charm degrees of freedom. Employing an efficient stochastic evaluation of the disconnected contribution available for twisted mass fermions, we show that the effect of excited states is large in particular for the strange σ\sigma-terms, where it can be as big as O(40O(\gtrsim 40%). This leads to the unfortunate conclusion that even with a source-sink separation of \sim 1.5 \fm and a good statistical accuracy it is not clear, whether excited state effects are under control for this quantity

    Beam-driven plasma-wakefield acceleration based on external injection has the potential to significantly reduce the size of future accelerators. Stability and quality of the acceleration process substantially depends on the incoming bunch parameters. Precise control of the current profile is essential for optimising energy-transfer efficiency and preserving energy spread. At the FLASHForward facility, driver--witness bunch pairs of adjustable bunch length and separation are generated by a set of collimators in a dispersive section, which enables fs-level control of the longitudinal bunch profile.     Global-change effects on early-stage decomposition processes in tidal wetlands – implications from a global survey using standardized litter

    Tidal wetlands, such as tidal marshes and mangroves, are hotspots for carbon sequestration. The preservation of organic matter (OM) is a critical process by which tidal wetlands exert influence over the global carbon cycle and at the same time gain elevation to keep pace with sea-level rise (SLR). The present study assessed the effects of temperature and relative sea level on the decomposition rate and stabilization of OM in tidal wetlands worldwide, utilizing commercially available standardized litter. While effects on decomposition rate per se were minor, we show strong negative effects of temperature and relative sea level on stabilization, as based on the fraction of labile, rapidly hydrolyzable OM that becomes stabilized during deployment. Across study sites, OM stabilization was 29 % lower in low, more frequently flooded vs. high, less frequently flooded zones. Stabilization declined by ∼ 75 % over the studied temperature gradient from 10.9 to 28.5 ∘C. Additionally, data from the Plum Island long-term ecological research site in Massachusetts, USA, show a pronounced reduction in OM stabilization by > 70 % in response to simulated coastal eutrophication, confirming the potentially high sensitivity of OM stabilization to global change. We therefore provide evidence that rising temperature, accelerated SLR, and coastal eutrophication may decrease the future capacity of tidal wetlands to sequester carbon by affecting the initial transformations of recent OM inputs to soil OM

    Clostridium botulinum group III: a group with dual identity shaped by plasmids, phages and mobile elements

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Clostridium botulinum </it>strains can be divided into four physiological groups that are sufficiently diverged to be considered as separate species. Here we present the first complete genome of a <it>C. botulinum </it>strain from physiological group III, causing animal botulism. We also compare the sequence to three new draft genomes from the same physiological group.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The 2.77 Mb chromosome was highly conserved between the isolates and also closely related to that of <it>C. novyi</it>. However, the sequence was very different from the human <it>C. botulinum </it>group genomes. Replication-directed translocations were rare and conservation of synteny was high. The largest difference between <it>C. botulinum </it>group III isolates occurred within their surprisingly large plasmidomes and in the pattern of mobile elements insertions. Five plasmids, constituting 13.5% of the total genetic material, were present in the completed genome. Interestingly, the set of plasmids differed compared to other isolates. The largest plasmid, the botulinum-neurotoxin carrying prophage, was conserved at a level similar to that of the chromosome while the medium-sized plasmids seemed to be undergoing faster genetic drift. These plasmids also contained more mobile elements than other replicons. Several toxins and resistance genes were identified, many of which were located on the plasmids.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The completion of the genome of <it>C. botulinum </it>group III has revealed it to be a genome with dual identity. It belongs to the pathogenic species <it>C. botulinum</it>, but as a genotypic species it should also include <it>C. novyi </it>and <it>C. haemolyticum</it>. The genotypic species share a conserved chromosomal core that can be transformed into various pathogenic variants by modulation of the highly plastic plasmidome.</p
