Coexistence of Bloch electrons and glassy electrons in Ca10(Ir4As8)(Fe2_xIrxAs2)5 revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of Ca10(Ir4As8)(Fe2_xIrxAs2)5 shows that the Fe 3d electrons in the FeAs layer form the hole-like Fermi pocket at the zone center and the electron-like Fermi pockets at the zone corners as commonly seen in various Fe-based superconductors. The FeAs layer is heavily electron doped and has relatively good two dimensionality. On the other hand, the Ir 5d electrons are metallic and glassy probably due to atomic disorder related to the Ir 5d orbital instability. Ca10(Ir4As8)(Fe2_xIrxAs2)5 exhibits a unique electronic state where the Bloch electrons in the FeAs layer coexist with the glassy electrons in the Ir4As8 layer.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Plant endophytes help in maintaining plant health by means of their biofertilizer and biocontrol attributes and, are currently being explored for their ability to produce novel biologically active compounds. Herein, we have isolated beneficial endophytic bacteria from Echinacea purpurea (EF.B3) and Lonicera japonica (LS.B11) that showed phosphate solubilization, siderophore, indole acetic acid and hydrogen cyanide production, and fixation of atmospheric nitrogen. Additionally, the endophytes also conferred antifungal activity against Fusarium sp., Rhizoctonia sp., Pythium sp. and Alternaria sp. When tested in plantae, the LS.B11 and EF.B3 strains were able to promote plant growth and control fungal infections in peaseedlings. Both strains were found to be endophytic as tested by RAPD and viability count. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing, we show that the LS.B11 and EF.B3 strains are related to Pseudomonas sp. And Burkholderia sp. By using degenerate primers, we identified genes related to polyketide synthases and non-ribosomal peptide synthetases in EF.B3 and LS.B11, respectively that are typically involved in the production of antimicrobial compounds. Therefore, we conclude that both endophytes can be used for increasing agriculture productivity and in the production of antimicrobial compounds for crop improvement

Coexistence of localized and itinerant electrons in BaFe2X3 (X = S and Se) revealed by photoemission spectroscopy

We report a photoemission study at room temperature on BaFe2X3 (X = S and Se) and CsFe2Se3 in which two-leg ladders are formed by the Fe sites. The Fe 2p core-level peaks of BaFe2X3 are broad and exhibit two components, indicating that itinerant and localized Fe 3d sites coexist similar to KxFe2-ySe2. The Fe 2p core-level peak of CsFe2Se3 is rather sharp and is accompanied by a charge-transfer satellite. The insulating ground state of CsFe2Se3 can be viewed as a Fe2+ Mott insulator in spite of the formal valence of +2.5. The itinerant versus localized behaviors can be associated with the stability of chalcogen p holes in the two-leg ladder structure.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, Accepted in publication for Physical Review

Do GPs want or need formal support following a patient suicide?: a mixed methods study.

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Patient suicide can be a devastating event for some general practitioners (GPs). Few guidelines exist to aid or support GPs in the aftermath of patient suicide. AIM: To explore GPs views on how they are affected by a patient suicide and the formal support available to them following a patient suicide. DESIGN: Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. SETTING: General practices in the northwest of England. METHODS: About 198 semi-structured interviews were conducted as part of a retrospective study. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using descriptive statistics and a framework thematic approach. RESULTS: GPs were aged between 31 and 67 years, 144 (73%) were male and the number of years in practice varied between 8 and 40 years (median = 24 years). GPs were based at 133 (67%) urban and 65 (33%) rural practices, 30 (15%) were single-handed GP practices and 168 (85%) practices had two or more GPs. About 131 (66%) GPs reported being affected by patient suicide through feelings of grief, guilt and self-scrutiny. A greater number of years in practice may have been protective against these effects. About 54 (27%) GPs reported having mostly 'informal' support from peers or colleagues and support was less available to younger and single handed GPs. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that the majority of GPs are affected by patient suicide and most seek informal support from their peers and colleagues. Although many indicated that informal support systems were adequate and provided a protective environment, procedures should be developed to ensure the availability of guidelines for those who may require formal support

A low profile modified e-slotted microstrip antenna is proposed for multiple wireless communication applications. The performance of antenna is measured in terms of return loss, current distribution. The effect of variation of height of substrate on antenna impedance bandwidth is also studied. The antenna with overall size 30×50×.8m.m.3 resonates at eight frequencies which covers some important applications like GPS, wireless local area network (WLAN), worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMax), Satellite communication etc. The proposed antenna structure offers great advantages due to compact size, simple structure and multiple applications. The multi band antenna was designed and optimized using ansoft HFSS v13 simulator. The simulated result is good agreement with measured result

Dynamic mechanical, electrical and magnetic properties of ferrite filled styrene-isoprene-styrene

    Get PDF
The dynamic mechanical, electrical and magnetic properties of highly filled magnetic polymeric composites containing 75 to 85 wt % barium ferrite in a thermoplastic elastomer matrix styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS), are reported. The dependence of the properties on the volume fraction of the filler has been investigated. It is shown that the toughness and shore hardness of the composite may be correlated to its dynamic mechanical parameters. The use of coupling agents for surface treatment of ferrites has been shown to improve the magnetic properties of the composite due to better filler dispersion

Electronic structure of Pr0.67_{0.67}Ca0.33_{0.33}MnO3_3 near the Fermi level studied by ultraviolet photoelectron and x-ray absorption spectroscopy

We have investigated the temperature-dependent changes in the near-EEF_F occupied and unoccupied states of Pr0.67_{0.67}Ca0.33_{0.33}MnO3_3 which shows the presence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. The temperature-dependent changes in the charge and orbital degrees of freedom and associated changes in the Mn 3dd - O 2pp hybridization result in varied O 2pp contributions to the valence band. A quantitative estimate of the charge transfer energy (EECT_{CT}) shows a larger value compared to the earlier reported estimates. The charge localization causing the large EECT_{CT} is discussed in terms of different models including the electronic phase separation.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, To be published in Phy. Rev.

Direct Visualization of Laser-Driven Focusing Shock Waves

Cylindrically or spherically focusing shock waves have been of keen interest for the past several decades. In addition to fundamental study of materials under extreme conditions, cavitation, and sonoluminescence, focusing shock waves enable myriad applications including hypervelocity launchers, synthesis of new materials, production of high-temperature and high-density plasma fields, and a variety of medical therapies. Applications in controlled thermonuclear fusion and in the study of the conditions reached in laser fusion are also of current interest. Here we report on a method for direct real-time visualization and measurement of laser-driven shock generation, propagation, and 2D focusing in a sample. The 2D focusing of the shock front is the consequence of spatial shaping of the laser shock generation pulse into a ring pattern. A substantial increase of the pressure at the convergence of the acoustic shock front is observed experimentally and simulated numerically. Single-shot acquisitions using a streak camera reveal that at the convergence of the shock wave in liquid water the supersonic speed reaches Mach 6, corresponding to the multiple gigapascal pressure range 30 GPa

Power Factor Correction Using Bridgeless Boost Topology

Power quality is becoming a major concern for many electrical users. The high power non linear loads (such as adjustable speed drives, arc furnace, static power converter etc) and low power loads (such as computer, fax machine etc) produce voltage fluctuations, harmonic currents and an inequality in network system which results into low power factor operation of the power system. The devices commonly used in industrial, commercial and residential applications need to go through rectification for their proper functioning and operation. Due to the increasing demand of these devices, the line current harmonics create a major problem by degrading the power factor of the system thus affecting the performance of the devices. Hence there is a need to reduce the input line current harmonics so as to improve the power factor of the system. This has led to designing of Power Factor Correction circuits. Power Factor Correction (PFC) involves two techniques, Active PFC and Passive PFC. An active power factor circuit using Boost Converter is used for improving the power factor. This thesis work analyzes the procedural approach and benefits of applying Bridgeless Boost Topology for improving the power factor over Boost Converter Topology. A traditional design methodology Boost Converter Topology is initially analyzed and compared with the Bridgeless Boost topology and the overall Power Factor (PF) can be improved to the expectation. Method of re-shaping the input current waveform to be similar pattern as the sinusoidal input voltage is done by the Boost converter and the related controls that act as a Power Factor Correction (PFC) circuit. Higher efficiency can be achieved by using the Bridgeless Boost Topology. In this paper simulation of Boost Converter topology and Bridgeless PFC boost Converter is presented. Performance comparisons between the conventional PFC boost Converter and the Bridgeless PFC Boost Converter is done
