    Rangeland Management in a Changing World – Active and Passive Restoration Case Studies from Ethiopia, Tanzania, and South Africa

    Rangelands cover almost 50% of the earth’s land surface and are often found in marginal areas that often face climate extremes. The production of herbaceous biomass has strongly declined over the last decades due to overgrazing and adverse climatic conditions such as frequent droughts and flooding. While different rangeland restoration methods are being used, their effect on vegetation quality and quantity over time has rarely been experimentally tested and monitored. Our research comprises experiments of various rangeland restoration tools we have used across eastern and southern Africa. We conducted passive restoration through exclosure experiments and compared vegetation in and outside of exclosures to understand regrowth patterns as well as overall forage quality. The active restoration methods we tested comprised domestic livestock species diversification, i.e., inclusion of browsers in rangeland systems. Further, we investigated how reseeding of nutritious rangeland grass species and subsequent grazing regimes can improve the rangeland health. We found that exclosures strongly improved biomass and productivity but that regular moderate grazing can further enhance those compared to no grazing. Our results further suggest that including browsers might enhance nutrients of herbaceous vegetation and soils of rangeland systems. We also claim that young grass species such as Chloris gayana and Cenchrus ciliaris, which are commonly used for reseeding of rangelands, show higher nutrient contents and productivity under light or moderate grazing pressure while mature grasses did not show this effect. We conclude that a combination of active and passive restoration methods can greatly enhance quality and quantity of African rangelands and enhance their sustainable use and resilience towards climatic shocks such as increasing drought frequencies

    Global Matrix 3.0 Physical Activity Report Card Grades for Children and Youth:Results and Analysis From 49 Countries

    BACKGROUND: Accumulating sufficient moderate to vigorous physical activity is recognized as a key determinant of physical, physiological, developmental, mental, cognitive, and social health among children and youth (aged 5-17 y). The Global Matrix 3.0 of Report Card grades on physical activity was developed to achieve a better understanding of the global variation in child and youth physical activity and associated supports. METHODS: Work groups from 49 countries followed harmonized procedures to develop their Report Cards by grading 10 common indicators using the best available data. The participating countries were divided into 3 categories using the United Nations' human development index (HDI) classification (low or medium, high, and very high HDI). RESULTS: A total of 490 grades, including 369 letter grades and 121 incomplete grades, were assigned by the 49 work groups. Overall, an average grade of "C-," "D+," and "C-" was obtained for the low and medium HDI countries, high HDI countries, and very high HDI countries, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The present study provides rich new evidence showing that the situation regarding the physical activity of children and youth is a concern worldwide. Strategic public investments to implement effective interventions to increase physical activity opportunities are needed.</p

    Prevalence, withdrawal symptoms and associated factors of khat chewing among students at Jimma University in Ethiopia

    Background: Recently, khat chewing has become a common practice among high school, college, and university students. Regular khat chewing is thought to be a predisposing factor for different physical and mental health problems. It can lead to absenteeism from work and classes. In Ethiopia, to our knowledge no published study has investigated khat withdrawal symptoms. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the prevalence, withdrawal symptoms, and associated factors of khat chewing among regular undergraduate students on the main campus of Jimma University in Ethiopia. Methods: The institution-based, cross-sectional study was conducted in January 2016. Data were collected from 651 main campus regular undergraduate students with a structured, self-administered questionnaire, entered into Epidata 3.1 and exported to SPSS version 20 for Windows. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions were used to explore associations and identify variables independently associated with khat chewing. Results: The study found that the lifetime and current prevalence of khat chewing among students were 26.3% (95% CI: 24.3, 28.3) and 23.9% (95% CI: 21.94, 25.86), respectively. About 25.7% of students started chewing after joining university, and 60.5% of these students started during their first year. The main reason given for starting khat chewing was for study purposes (54.6%), followed by socialization purposes (42.3%). Among current khat chewers, 72.9% reported that they had chewed khat for 1 year or more and 68.2% reported that they had experienced various withdrawal symptoms. The most frequently reported withdrawal symptoms were feeling depressed, craving, and feeling fatigued. Being male, attending a place of worship daily/2-3 times per week, cannabis use, smoking cigarettes, and having family members currently chewing khat were independently associated with khat chewing. Conclusions: This study found that large numbers of university students were currently chewing khat. In this study withdrawal symptoms and factors that significantly affect khat chewing were identified. Besides it gave new ideas regarding khat withdrawal symptoms in Ethiopia. It serves as a critical role of providing information to form rational foundation for public health policy, prevention and planning to bring change in contributing factors for Khat chewing. The finding will be serving as base line information for further study

    Status and Trends of Physical Activity Surveillance, Policy, and Research in 164 Countries: Findings From the Global Observatory for Physical Activity—GoPA! 2015 and 2020 Surveys

    Background: Physical activity (PA) surveillance, policy, and research efforts need to be periodically appraised to gain insight into national and global capacities for PA promotion. The aim of this paper was to assess the status and trends in PA surveillance, policy, and research in 164 countries. Methods: We used data from the Global Observatory for Physical Activity (GoPA!) 2015 and 2020 surveys. Comprehensive searches were performed for each country to determine the level of development of their PA surveillance, policy, and research, and the findings were verified by the GoPA! Country Contacts. Trends were analyzed based on the data available for both survey years. Results: The global 5-year progress in all 3 indicators was modest, with most countries either improving or staying at the same level. PA surveillance, policy, and research improved or remained at a high level in 48.1%, 40.6%, and 42.1% of the countries, respectively. PA surveillance, policy, and research scores decreased or remained at a low level in 8.3%, 15.8%, and 28.6% of the countries, respectively. The highest capacity for PA promotion was found in Europe, the lowest in Africa and low- and lower-middle-income countries. Although a large percentage of the world’s population benefit from at least some PA policy, surveillance, and research efforts in their countries, 49.6 million people are without PA surveillance, 629.4 million people are without PA policy, and 108.7 million live in countries without any PA research output. A total of 6.3 billion people or 88.2% of the world’s population live in countries where PA promotion capacity should be significantly improved. Conclusion: Despite PA is essential for health, there are large inequalities between countries and world regions in their capacity to promote PA. Coordinated efforts are needed to reduce the inequalities and improve the global capacity for PA promotion

    Experimental evaluation of sorptive removal of fluoride from drinking water using natural and brewery waste diatomite

    © 2019 Institution of Chemical Engineers This paper focuses on introducing low-cost water treatment options by using waste products from the beer industry, thereby contributing to cleaner production. To this purpose, sorptive removal of fluoride from drinking water using locally available natural grade diatomite (NGD) and brewery waste diatomite (BWD) was studied in a batch adsorption system. The equilibrium was achieved within an adsorption time of 60 min for NGD and 30 min for BWD at the optimum pH of 5 and adsorbent dose of 60 g/L. The equilibrium data were best fitted to the Freundlich isotherm (R2 = 0.979 and 0.995) for NGD and BWD, respectively. The adsorption capacity (qmax) calculated from the Langmuir isotherm value obtained for NGD and BWD was 0.917 mg/g and 0.617 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption kinetics data for both adsorbents followed the pseudo-second-order model (R2 = 0.734 and 0.947 for NGD and BWD, respectively). The influence of other anions on fluoride removal process has a slight influence, following the order PO43− > HCO3− > CO32− > SO42− > NO3− > Cl- for both adsorbents. The materials can be used on a system level for real water sample of low fluoride concentration (≤ 5 mg/L) and could be regenerated. Though BWD is considered as a waste for the brewery, it is used as a useful material for removal of fluoride.     Reorienting land degradation towards sustainable land management: Linking sustainable livelihoods with ecosystem services in rangeland systems

    This paper identifies new ways of moving from land degradation towards sustainable land management through the development of economic mechanisms. It identifies new mechanisms to tackle land degradation based on retaining critical levels of natural capital whilst basing livelihoods on a wider range of ecosystem services. This is achieved through a case study analysis of the Kalahari rangelands in southwest Botswana. The paper first describes the socio-economic and ecological characteristics of the Kalahari rangelands and the types of land degradation taking place. It then focuses on bush encroachment as a way of exploring new economic instruments (e.g. Payments for Ecosystem Services) designed to enhance the flow of ecosystem services that support livelihoods in rangeland systems. It does this by evaluating the likely impacts of bush encroachment, one of the key forms of rangeland degradation, on a range of ecosystem services in three land tenure types (private fenced ranches, communal grazing areas and Wildlife Management Areas), before considering options for more sustainable land management in these systems. We argue that with adequate policy support, economic mechanisms could help reorient degraded rangelands towards more sustainable land management. © 2014 The Authors
