An Efficient Molecular Dynamics Scheme for the Calculation of Dopant Profiles due to Ion Implantation
We present a highly efficient molecular dynamics scheme for calculating the
concentration depth profile of dopants in ion irradiated materials. The scheme
incorporates several methods for reducing the computational overhead, plus a
rare event algorithm that allows statistically reliable results to be obtained
over a range of several orders of magnitude in the dopant concentration.
We give examples of using this scheme for calculating concentration profiles
of dopants in crystalline silicon. Here we can predict the experimental profile
over five orders of magnitude for both channeling and non-channeling implants
at energies up to 100s of keV.
The scheme has advantages over binary collision approximation (BCA)
simulations, in that it does not rely on a large set of empirically fitted
parameters. Although our scheme has a greater computational overhead than the
BCA, it is far superior in the low ion energy regime, where the BCA scheme

Mothers behaving badly: chaotic hedonism and the crisis of neoliberal social reproduction
This article focuses on the significance of the plethora of representations of mothers âbehaving badlyâ in contemporary anglophone media texts, including the films Bad Moms, Fun Mom Dinner and Bad Momâs Christmas, the book and online cartoons Hurrah for Gin and the recent TV comedy dramas Motherland, The Let Down and Catastrophe. All these media texts include representations of, first, mothers in the midst of highly chaotic everyday spaces where any smooth routine of domesticity is conspicuous by its absence; and second, mothers behaving hedonistically, usually through drinking and partying, behaviour that is more conventionally associated with men or women without children. After identifying the social type of the mother behaving badly (MBB), the article locates and analyses it in relation to several different social and cultural contexts. These contexts are: a neoliberal crisis in social reproduction marked by inequality and overwork; the continual if contested role of women as âfoundation parentsâ; and the negotiation of longer-term discourses of female hedonism. The title gestures towards a popular British sitcom of the 1990s, Men Behaving Badly, which popularized the idea of the ânew ladâ; and this article suggests that the new ladâs counterpart, the ladette, is mutating into the mother behaving badly, or the âlad momâ. Asking what work this figure does now, in a later neoliberal context, it argues that the mother behaving badly is simultaneously indicative of a widening and liberating range of maternal subject positions and symptomatic of a profound contemporary crisis in social reproduction. By focusing on the classed and racialised dynamics of the MBB â by examining who exactly is permitted to be hedonistic, and how â and by considering the MBBâs limited and partial imagining of progressive social change, the article concludes by emphasizing the urgency of creating more connections between such discourses and âparents behaving politicallyâ
Singular solutions of fully nonlinear elliptic equations and applications
We study the properties of solutions of fully nonlinear, positively
homogeneous elliptic equations near boundary points of Lipschitz domains at
which the solution may be singular. We show that these equations have two
positive solutions in each cone of , and the solutions are unique
in an appropriate sense. We introduce a new method for analyzing the behavior
of solutions near certain Lipschitz boundary points, which permits us to
classify isolated boundary singularities of solutions which are bounded from
either above or below. We also obtain a sharp Phragm\'en-Lindel\"of result as
well as a principle of positive singularities in certain Lipschitz domains.Comment: 41 pages, 2 figure
Z=50 shell gap near Sn from intermediate-energy Coulomb excitations in even-mass Sn isotopes
Rare isotope beams of neutron-deficient Sn nuclei from the
fragmentation of Xe were employed in an intermediate-energy Coulomb
excitation experiment yielding transition strengths.
The results indicate that these values are much larger
than predicted by current state-of-the-art shell model calculations. This
discrepancy can be explained if protons from within the Z = 50 shell are
contributing to the structure of low-energy excited states in this region. Such
contributions imply a breaking of the doubly-magic Sn core in the light

Universal architecture of bacterial chemoreceptor arrays
Chemoreceptors are key components of the high-performance signal transduction system that controls bacterial chemotaxis. Chemoreceptors are typically localized in a cluster at the cell pole, where interactions among the receptors in the cluster are thought to contribute to the high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, and precise adaptation of the signaling system. Previous structural and genomic studies have produced conflicting models, however, for the arrangement of the chemoreceptors in the clusters. Using whole-cell electron cryo-tomography, here we show that chemoreceptors of different classes and in many different species representing several major bacterial phyla are all arranged into a highly conserved, 12-nm hexagonal array consistent with the proposed âtrimer of dimersâ organization. The various observed lengths of the receptors confirm current models for the methylation, flexible bundle, signaling, and linker sub-domains in vivo. Our results suggest that the basic mechanism and function of receptor clustering is universal among bacterial species and was thus conserved during evolution
A search in north Greenland for a new ice-core drill site

Copyright International Glaciological SocietyA new deep ice-core drilling site has been identified in north Greenland at 75.12 ° N, 42 .30 ° W, 316 km north-northwest (NNW) of the GRIP drill site on the summit of the ice sheet. The ice thickness here is 3085 m; the surface elevation is 2919 m. The North GRIP (NG RIP) site is identified so that ice of Eemian age (115- 130 ka BP, calendar years before present ) is located as far above bedrock as possible and so the thickness of the Eemian layer is as great as possible. An ice-flow model, similar to the one used to date the GRIP ice core, is used to simulate the flow along the NNW-trending ice ridge. Surface and bedrock elevations, surface accumulation-rate distribution and radio-echo sounding along the ridge have been used as model input. The surface accumulation rate drops from 0.23 mice equivalent year 1 at GRIP to 0.19 mice equivalent year- 1 50 km from GRIP. Over the following 300 km the accumulation is relatively constant, before it starts decreasing again further north. Ice thicknesses up to 3250 m bring the temperature of the basal ice up to the pressure-melting point 100- 250 km from GRIP. The NGRIP site is located 316 km from GRIP in a region where the bedrock is smooth and the accumulation rate is 0.19 m ice equivalent year 1 ⹠The modeled basal ice here has always been a few degrees below the pressure-melting point. Internal radio-echo sounding horizons can be traceq between the GRIP and NGRIP sites, allowing us to date the ice down to 2300 m depth (52 ka BP ). An ice-flow model predicts that the Eemian-age ice will be located in the depth range 2710 - 2800 m, which is 285 m above the bedrock. This is 120 m further above the bedrock, and the thickness of the Eemian layer of ice is 20 m thicker, than at the GRIP ice-core ite
The Host Galaxy of GRB 990712
We present a comprehensive study of the z=0.43 host galaxy of GRB 990712,
involving ground-based photometry, spectroscopy, and HST imaging. The
broad-band UBVRIJHKs photometry is used to determine the global spectral energy
distribution (SED) of the host galaxy. Comparison with that of known galaxy
types shows that the host is similar to a moderately reddened starburst galaxy
with a young stellar population. The estimated internal extinction in the host
is Av=0.15+/-0.1 and the star-formation rate (SFR) from the UV continuum is
1.3+/-0.3 M_sun/yr, (not corrected for the effects of extinction). Other galaxy
template spectra than starbursts failed to reproduce the observed SED. We also
present VLT spectra leading to the detection of Halpha from the GRB host
galaxy. A SFR of 2.8+/-0.7 M_sun/yr, is inferred from the Halpha line flux, and
the presence of a young stellar population is supported by a large equivalent
width. Images from HST/STIS show that the host has two separate knots, which

Two multipurpose sample cells of quartz (SiO2) or sapphire (Al2O3) capillaries, developed for the study of solidâgas reactions in dosing or flow mode, are presented. They allow fast change of pressure up to 100 or 300â
bar (1â
bar = 100â
000â
Pa) and can also handle solidâliquidâgas studies
Chandra spectroscopy of the hot star beta Crucis and the discovery of a pre-main-sequence companion
In order to test the O star wind-shock scenario for X-ray production in less
luminous stars with weaker winds, we made a pointed 74 ks observation of the
nearby early B giant, beta Cru (B0.5 III), with the Chandra HETGS. We find that
the X-ray spectrum is quite soft, with a dominant thermal component near 3
million K, and that the emission lines are resolved but quite narrow, with
half-widths of 150 km/s. The forbidden-to-intercombination line ratios of Ne IX
and Mg XI indicate that the hot plasma is distributed in the wind, rather than
confined near the photosphere. It is difficult to understand the X-ray data in
the context of the standard wind-shock paradigm for OB stars, primarily because
of the narrow lines, but also because of the high X-ray production efficiency.
A scenario in which the bulk of the outer wind is shock heated is broadly
consistent with the data, but not very well motivated theoretically. It is
possible that magnetic channeling could explain the X-ray properties, although
no field has been detected on beta Cru. We detected periodic variability in the
hard (hnu > 1 keV) X-rays, modulated on the known optical period of 4.58 hours,
which is the period of the primary beta Cep pulsation mode for this star. We
also have detected, for the first time, an apparent companion to beta Cru at a
projected separation of 4 arcsec. This companion was likely never seen in
optical images because of the presumed very high contrast between it and beta
Cru in the optical. However, the brightness contrast in the X-ray is only 3:1,
which is consistent with the companion being an X-ray active low-mass
pre-main-sequence star. The companion's X-ray spectrum is relatively hard and
