    Cement-rock interaction : infiltration of a high-pH solution into a fractured granite core

    Within the framework of the HPF project (Hyperalkaline Plume in Fractured Rock) at the Grimsel Test Site (Switzerland), a small scale core infiltration experiment was performed at the University of Bern. A high-pH solution was continuously injected, under a constant pressure gradient, into a cylindrical core of granite containing a fracture. This high-pH solution was a synthetic version of solutions characteristic of early stages in the degradation of cement. The interaction between the rock and the solutions was reflected by significant changes in the composition of the injected solution, despite the negligible pH-buffering capacity, and a decrease in the permeability of the rock. Changes in the mineralogy and porosity of the fault gouge filling the fracture were only minor. Within the new LCS (Long-Term Cement Studies) project at Grimsel, new one-dimensional reactive transport modeling using CrunchFlow has been used to improve the interpretation of the experimental results. Dispersive and advective solute transport, adsorption processes and mineral reaction kinetics have been taken into account. The evolution of solution composition is mainly controlled by dissolution/precipitation reactions. Adsorption processes (cation exchange, surface complexation) only play a role in the very early stages of the experiment

    Localization and band-gap pinning in semiconductor superlattices with layer-thickness fluctuations

    We consider (AlAs)_n/(GaAs)_n superlattices with random thickness fluctuations Delta-n around the nominal period n. Using three-dimensional pseudopotential plane-wave band theory, we show that (i) any amount Delta-n/n of thickness fluctuations leads to band-edge wavefunction localization, (ii) for small Delta-n/n the SL band gap is pinned at the gap level produced by a single layer with ``wrong'' thickness n + Delta-n, (iii) the bound states due to monolayer thickness fluctuations lead to significant band-gap reductions, (iv) AlAs/GaAs SL's with monolayer thickness fluctuations have a direct band gap, while the ideal SL's are indirect for n<4.Comment: 10 pages, Revtex. 3 figures available at http://www.cecam.fr/~mader/elstruc.html .     Electronic structure of intentionally disordered AlAs/GaAs superlattices

    We use realistic pseudopotentials and a plane-wave basis to study the electronic structure of non-periodic, three-dimensional, 2000-atom (AlAs)_n/(GaAs)_m (001) superlattices, where the individual layer thicknesses n,m = {1,2,3} are randomly selected. We find that while the band gap of the equivalent (n = m = 2) ordered superlattice is indirect, random fluctuations in layer thicknesses lead to a direct gap in the planar Brillouin zone, strong wavefunction localization along the growth direction, short radiative lifetimes, and a significant band-gap reduction, in agreement with experiments on such intentionally grown disordered superlattices.Comment: 10 pages, REVTeX and EPSF macros, 4 figures in postscript. e-mail to [email protected]

    Correlates of children’s physical activity during physical education classes

    Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of correlates on physical activity (PA) during physical education (PE). Method: One hundred and ninety children (11.2 ± 0.8 y, 1.5 ± 0.1 m, 37.7 ± 8.3 kg) of 12 classes participated. Children were asked to wear an accelerometer for seven days. Teachers filled in a questionnaire to collect data about correlates of PA during PE (i.e. sex, weight, age of children, daily PA of the children, class size, PA behavior and formation of the teacher and size of gym). Correlates for moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) during PE were determined using multifactor linear regression analysis. Results Fifty-three percent of the variability of MVPA during PE was explained by the investigated correlates. Apart from individual correlates (sex, weight, age), PE taught in small classes and large gyms by a PE specialist and a high overall PA of the child had independent positive effects on MVPA during PE. Conclusion: The results underline the importance of small PE classes taught by specialized PE teachers in large gyms and the increase of overall PA of children for effective future intervention studies and for political discussion focusing on increasing PA during PE

    Predicion of charge separation in GaAs/AlAs cylindrical Russian Doll nanostructures

    We have contrasted the quantum confinement of (i) multiple quantum wells of flat GaAs and AlAs layers, i.e. (\GaAs)_{m}/(\AlAs)_n/(\GaAs)_p/(\AlAs)_q, with (ii) ``cylindrical Russian Dolls'' -- an equivalent sequence of wells and barriers arranged as concentric wires. Using a pseudopotential plane-wave calculation, we identified theoretically a set of numbers (m,n,pm,n,p and qq) such that charge separation can exist in ``cylindrical Russian Dolls'': the CBM is localized in the inner GaAs layer, while the VBM is localized in the outer GaAs layer.Comment: latex, 8 page

    Improving mentalizing deficits in older age with region-specific transcranial direct current stimulation.

    Older adults have difficulties to detect the intentions, thoughts, and feelings of others, indicating an age-associated decline of socio-cognitive abilities that are known as "mentalizing". These deficits in mental state recognition are driven by neurofunctional alterations in brain regions that are implicated in mentalizing, such as the right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ) and the dorso-medial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC). We tested whether focal transcranial current stimulation (tDCS) of the rTPJ and dmPFC has the potential to eliminate mentalizing deficits in older adults. Mentalizing deficits were assessed with a novel mindreading task that required the recognition of mental states in child faces. Older adults (n = 60) performed worse than younger adults (n = 30) on the mindreading task, indicating age-dependent deficits in mental state recognition. These mentalizing deficits were ameliorated in older adults who received sham-controlled andodal tDCS over the rTPJ (n = 30) but remained unchanged in older adults who received sham-controlled andodal tDCS over the dmPFC (n = 30). We, thus, showed for the first time that anodal tDCS over the rTPJ has the potential to remediate age-dependent mentalizing deficits in a region-specific way. This provides a rationale for exploring stimulation-based interventions targeting mentalizing deficits in older age. [Abstract copyright: © 2024. The Author(s).

In some countries, protein content and composition, influencing technological value, are equivalent to those produced under conventional practices. Beside agronomical techniques, technological processes can help to maintain a good quality. Pre-treatments before milling such as debranning were found to be efficient in reducing DON contamination.
