Groundwater surface mapping informs sources of catchment baseflow

Expression in Yeast Links Field Polymorphisms in PfATP6 to in Vitro Artemisinin Resistance and Identifies New Inhibitor Classes
Background. The mechanism of action of artemisinins against malaria is unclear, despite their widespread use in combination therapies and the emergence of resistance. Results. Here, we report expression of PfATP6 (a SERCA pump) in yeast and demonstrate its inhibition by artemisinins. Mutations in PfATP6 identified in field isolates (such as S769N) and in laboratory clones (such as L263E) decrease susceptibility to artemisinins, whereas they increase susceptibility to unrelated inhibitors such as cyclopiazonic acid. As predicted from the yeast model, Plasmodium falciparum with the L263E mutation is also more susceptible to cyclopiazonic acid. An inability to knockout parasite SERCA pumps provides genetic evidence that they are essential in asexual stages of development. Thaperoxides are a new class of potent antimalarial designed to act by inhibiting PfATP6. Results in yeast confirm this inhibition. Conclusions. Removing exogenous information using pedigree data
Management of certain populations requires the preservation of its pure genetic background. When, for different reasons, undesired alleles are introduced, the original genetic conformation must be recovered. The present study tested, through computer simulations, the power of recovery (the ability for removing the foreign information) from genealogical data. Simulated scenarios comprised different numbers of exogenous individuals taking partofthe founder population anddifferent numbers of unmanaged generations before the removal program started. Strategies were based on variables arising from classical pedigree analyses such as founders? contribution and partial coancestry. The ef?ciency of the different strategies was measured as the proportion of native genetic information remaining in the population. Consequences on the inbreeding and coancestry levels of the population were also evaluated. Minimisation of the exogenous founders? contributions was the most powerful method, removing the largest amount of genetic information in just one generation.However, as a side effect, it led to the highest values of inbreeding. Scenarios with a large amount of initial exogenous alleles (i.e. high percentage of non native founders), or many generations of mixing became very dif?cult to recover, pointing out the importance of being careful about introgression events in populatio
‘Engage the World’: examining conflicts of engagement in public museums
Public engagement has become a central theme in the mission statements of many cultural institutions, and in scholarly research into museums and heritage. Engagement has emerged as the go-to-it-word for generating, improving or repairing relations between museums and society at large. But engagement is frequently an unexamined term that might embed assumptions and ignore power relationships. This article describes and examines the implications of conflicting and misleading uses of ‘engagement’ in relation to institutional dealings with contested questions about culture and heritage. It considers the development of an exhibition on the Dead Sea Scrolls by the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto in 2009 within the new institutional goal to ‘Engage the World’. The chapter analyses the motivations, processes and decisions deployed by management and staff to ‘Engage the World’, and the degree to which the museum was able to re-think its strategies of public engagement, especially in relation to subjects,issues and publics that were more controversial in nature
Collective Flow from the Intranuclear Cascade Model
The phenomenon of collective flow in relativistic heavy ion collisions is
studied using the hadronic cascade model ARC. Direct comparison is made to data
gathered at the Bevalac, for Au+Au at GeV/c. In contrast to the
standard lore about the cascade model, collective flow is well described
quantitatively without the need for explicit mean field terms to simulate the
nuclear equation of state. Pion collective flow is in the opposite direction to
nucleon flow as is that of anti-nucleons and other produced particles. Pion and
nucleon flow are predicted at AGS energies also, where, in light of the higher
baryon densities achieved, we speculate that equation of state effects may be

A market study of sealed bid competition for Utah public school lunch milk, 1970-1975
Includes vita.This study was designed to determine the influence of various economic factors on sealed bid prices and, accordingly, to serve as a guide for setting these factors to obtain a more competitive price. Traditional concepts on structure, conduct, and performance provide a set of characteristics constituting the main reference frame. In adapting selected aspects of these concepts and including general market performance principles, a basis for analyzing the Utah public school lunch milk market was established. In effect, this approach facilitated development of an organizational frame whereby application of specific concepts was directed to the actual market setting. By using this procedure, specific theoretical market performance criteria were compared to an overall general assessment of how "well" the school lunch market performed. The selected data provided a basis for analyzing sealed bid price changes during the years, 1970 to 1975, for sampling of 24 of 32 Utah school districts. At the study outset two large cooperatives, one national chain, and a number of small local dairies served the market. A major transition in the number of firms occurred during the six years through combining the cooperatives into a marketing organization and the exit of smaller firms. Main characteristics associated with better performing sealed bid prices were increased numbers of bidders, larger contract size on a cross-sectional basis, and shorter distance from plant to school districts. Also significant were lower sealed bid prices the first three years of the study in contrast to higher sealed bid prices the last three years (a period marked by major structural changes). Others studying in the sealed bid area of economics may find this specific sealed bid market a viable approach for extension to similar markets. Thus, those investigating competitive price conditions in sealed bid markets may find these concepts useful.Includes bibliographical references
Delays Associated with Elementary Processes in Nuclear Reaction Simulations
Scatterings, particularly those involving resonances, and other elementary
processes do not happen instantaneously. In the context of semiclassical
nuclear reaction simulations, we consider delays associated with an interaction
for incident quantum wave-packets. As a consequence, we express delays
associated with elementary processes in terms of elements of the scattering
matrix and phase shifts for elastic scattering. We show that, to within the
second order in density, the simulation must account for delays in scattering
consistently with the mean field in order to properly model thermodynamic
properties such as pressure and free-energy density. The delays associated with
nucleon-nucleon and pion-nucleon scattering in free space are analysed with
their nontrivial energy dependence. Finally, an example of s-channel scattering
of massless partons is studied, and scattering schemes in nuclear reaction

Convergent origination of a Drosophila-like dosage compensation mechanism in a reptile lineage
Sex chromosomes differentiated from different ancestral autosomes in various vertebrate lineages. Here, we trace the functional evolution of the XY Chromosomes of the green anole lizard (Anolis carolinensis), on the basis of extensive high-throughput genome, transcriptome and histone modification sequencing data and revisit dosage compensation evolution in representative mammals and birds with substantial new expression data. Our analyses show that Anolis sex chromosomes represent an ancient XY system that originated at least ≈160 million years ago in the ancestor of Iguania lizards, shortly after the separation from the snake lineage. The age of this system approximately coincides with the ages of the avian and two mammalian sex chromosomes systems. To compensate for the almost complete Y Chromosome degeneration, X-linked genes have become twofold up-regulated, restoring ancestral expression levels. The highly efficient dosage compensation mechanism of Anolis represents the only vertebrate case identified so far to fully support Ohno’s original dosage compensation hypothesis. Further analyses reveal that X up-regulation occurs only in males and is mediated by a male-specific chromatin machinery that leads to global hyperacetylation of histone H4 at lysine 16 specifically on the X Chromosome. The green anole dosage compensation mechanism is highly reminiscent of that of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. Altogether, our work unveils the convergent emergence of a Drosophila-like dosage compensation mechanism in an ancient reptilian sex chromosome system and highlights that the evolutionary pressures imposed by sex chromosome dosage reductions in different amniotes were resolved in fundamentally different ways
